Amoonguss
Traits: Effect Spore | Regenerator
114 | 85 | 70 | 85 | 80 | 30

Amoonguss is one of the many bulky Grass-types in NU and suffers great competition from its fellow plants. As a Poison / Grass type, it has to contend with Vileplume, who has Aromatherapy and better Special Attack, for a teamslot. Although it is sturdier than Vileplume, its defense is no match for Tangela, who boasts a Ground-type resistance and access to support moves such as Leech Seed and Knock Off. With these facts in mind, there are a some key elements to Amoonguss that makes it the most popular bulky Grass-type in the metagame today. It has access to Spore, one of the best moves in the game. BW2 also brought Amoonguss a wonderful ability in Regenerator, which greatly increases its durability. The huge HP stat that Amoonguss possesses means it can tank both Physical and Special hits well. If you're looking for a solid counter to powerful threats lurking in NU, look no further than Amoonguss!

Set(s):

[SET]
name: Physically Defensive
move 1: Spore
move 2: Giga Drain
move 3: Sludge Bomb / Clear Smog
move 4: Synthesis / Stun Spore / Protect
item: Leftovers
ability: Regenerator
nature(s): Bold
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD

Physically defensive Amoonguss is one of the best counters to Sawk, Gurdurr, and Swords Dance Samurott, all prominent threats in the metagame. It can act as a bulky pivot against Grass-types such as Serperior and Sawsbuck, beating them with Sludge Bomb and restoring some of the damage taken from Hidden Power Ice or Double Edge by switching out. Spore is likely to put out one of the opponents Pokemon for the rest of the match. However, it can only be used on one Pokemon at a time, so choose your targets wisely. The last slot depends on how you want to play Amoonguss. Synthesis allows Amoonguss to take a lot of hits without switching out, which is useful when using it as a bulky sponge on an offensive team. Stun Spore is useful for crippling switch-ins such as Magmortar and Braviary, making them much easier to take down. Protect makes dealing with Choice Band Emboar and Braviary a lot easier. This set is Amoonguss' most effective one, and is the only one people should use since it doesn't have many other options.

This little mushroom may not look like much, but it can be a pain to take down! It's already seeing huge usage up in OU because its just so good. Amoonguss won't be staying in NU for long, so abuse it while you can!!

My god, those dancing amoonguss...so hypnotizing.

But yeah I've played a lot of NU and I can say that this thing is a absolute bitch to take down. I mean, holy fuck. Its goddamn nigh on immortal. And it gets spore. Definitely worth a slot on any team that needs a wall. Mind you all of this was pre regenerator. Post, I dont even want to imagine taking this thing on.

Black Version Pokédex entry: It lures prey close by dancing and waving its arm caps, which resemble Poké Balls, in a swaying motion.

Amoonguss is one of my bros. A few months ago when I was playing every day I had a decent team where he was the star of the show. Spore is a pain in the ass to deal with, especially on a Pokémon that's so bulky. With access to Regenerator, Amoonguss now has a much more intimidating consistency to not die. Seriously, this thing has been upgraded to Super Shroom 2.

This thing can easily fit into a core with Alomomola to form one of the sturdiest walls in the tier. Its versatility and defensive prowess should easily net it a spot in almost any team.

EDIT: Okay, so we know how Amoonguss lures its prey, but what does it actually do once they've been lured?

Amoonguss is a pokemon I respect in the NU tier but not one i find using that much because Tangela in my opinion does its job better. But when i do run Amoonguss it is the physical set that you have. But with the arrival of B2W2, his ability Regenerator will definitely earn a spot on my teams. I think with the ability it will be able to give Tangela a good run for its money (maybe even better). Plus it could become a very good pokemon to wall Golurk.

I had a 40 turn stall war against Amoonguss with my Mush the other day... Scarred for life thanks to SubSpore D: (last two pok's by the way, didnt just sit there hoping to crit for 40 turns... not that would matter, because he had sub. FFFFFFFUUUUUU).

just run like 12 speed EVs so you can outspeed amoongus

CB Golurk Earthquake vs 252/252+ Amoonguss: 235-277 (54.39 - 64.12%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
CB Golurk Ice Punch vs 252/252+ Amoonguss: 282-332 (65.27 - 76.85%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

nooooope

that gives it one turn to spore golurk and commence giga draining him. for it to be an effective counter to it it needs to put it to sleep

The point Zebraiken was trying to make is that Amoonguss cannot switch into Golurk, it gets outsped and 2HKOed. Sure if it is one on one Amoonguss has a better chance to win, but it is not certain as Golurk can just wake up after being Spored. It is a decent check, but does not wall Golurk at all.

I have been using double powder Ammonguss recently, and I must say its amazing. Putting something to sleep and then hitting Stun Spore as they switch to their "counter" is so much fun, and then you have crippled two Pokemon for the rest of the match. Beyond that Amoonguss is such a good check to many huge threats, such as Sawk and Samurott, and will definitely be moving up a tier or more during the next tier changes. Use it while you can people.

yeah thats what i was trying to say, it cant switch in, but if it possibly get the spore off it can deal with golurk, i probably used the wrong words when saying wall but it can handle itself decently

Some of you might recall me talking about using Substitute on Amoonguss on the IRC and the truth is it has been one of the most useful moves I've used on Amoonguss. It's other options are certainly okay Stun Spore & Protect in particular are really useful and Synthesis can certainly be helpful but I find it redundant most of the time as I'll rarely stay in long enough not to recover most of the damage I've received with Regenerator. I've been using Stun Spore over it after someone said it would be better than sub but other than the odd paralysis all it does for me is to allow the opponent to switch into the eventual spore with something.

Sub on the other hand is completely healed off by Regenerator (and a turn of leftovers but it doesn't actually matter) and means rather than letting your opponent chooses what goes to sleep you get a little more control and can Sludge Bomb or Giga Drain whatever came into to take the Spore (especially if it was a Vital Spirit or already status'd pokemon.

Double spore is a ton of fun. Amoonguss is amazingly good right now but I can't say that I'll be sorry when it leaves because I've always preferred Vileplume as a bulky Grass/Poison. It's kind of sad that Amoonguss lacks options other than a physical wall imo but it's probably too good at what it does to be used any differently anyways. SubSeed would be cool if it actually got Leech Seed :(. I'll probably keep on using him up in OU once he moves up because I love laughing at my opponent's rage against the shroom.

This, 100%. I have been using Double Powder with a bulky CB Golurk and it's been absolutely amazing. There's not really any chance to use Synthesis since ammonguss is so slow. You're almost always better off switching out.

also, I have been using a Ammo-mola core (Ammonguss + Alomomola, I am going to coin this name for the little time we have Ammonguss), and it works surprisingly well. Both having regenerator is a real bitch, and being able to wish and bring in Ammonguss to restore it's health after taking any hit is nice (hi CB Golurk :])

Okay, Rocky Helmet is just insane on Amoonguss. The sort of attacks you switch into are nearly always physical moves , a good portion of which count as Contact moves. Wearing down the likes of Samurott and Sawk is fun and all but it just annihilates Ciniccino doing something like 82% damage when it trys and Tail Slaps Amoonguss to death or does a bit of extra damage on U-turn.

Amoonguss works really well with Tangela. Seriously, they both have two reliable status moves and crazy defenses. Don't forget Regenerator. The lack of fire types (the main ones are Charizard, Emboar, and Flareon, and only Emboar is used very much) make Amoonguss really hard to deal with too.
Lol what is Amoonguss even doing here in NU when like 1/5 OU teams use it

Tier shifts only happen every three months; Amoonguss will probably be moving up during the next tier shifts.
Agreed. Although I reckon there's no probably about it. It shall follow in the footsteps of Dugtrio! It Dugtrio has footsteps..

But yes, use it while you can because Amoonguss is pretty damn good, even if you take it only for Spore. Unlike OU, there's very little that can switch into a Spore without being put to sleep. The only thing that springs to mind is Sap Sipper Sawsbuck/Miltank.

It's a shame for all non-users of Amoonguss that Magmortar's gone off to RU, since it would have been the perect counter.
