[SET]
Bulky Support (Amoonguss) @ Sitrus Berry / Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
Level: 50
Tera Type: Water / Fairy
EVs: 244 HP / 156 Def / 108 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 27 Spe
- Pollen Puff
- Spore
- Rage Powder
- Protect / Clear Smog
[SET COMMENTS]
- Amoonguss's main purpose is to disrupt the opposing team with Spore while protecting teammates with Rage Powder and healing them through Pollen Puff.
- Protect is the best fourth move most of the time because it means that the opponent can not freely double target Amoonguss. Clear Smog can be used as an answer to Dondozo teams, but it is not required to beat Dondozo as Amoonguss's best friend Incineroar can cycle Intimidate and Parting Shot to weaken Dondozo while Amoonguss uses Spore to put it to sleep.
- Sitrus Berry lets Amoonguss avoid being KOed by a double up or being KOed by three hits of Dragon Darts from Dragapult. Rocky Helmet lets Amoonguss punish physical attackers like Basculegion-M, Annihilape, and Maushold that want to use contact moves like Wave Crash, Rage Fist, and Population Bomb into Amoonguss's partners with Rage Powder.
- Tera Water lets Amoonguss resist attacks like Make It Rain from Gholdengo, Blizzard from Alolan Ninetales, and Flare Blitz from Incineroar at the cost of becoming weak to Wood Hammer from Rillaboom. Tera Fairy is used on teams that have a rough Kingambit matchup, letting Amoonguss easily redirect its attacks and put it to sleep with Spore while being a typing not weak to most of the metagame's attacks; however, it means that Amoonguss can't resist Make It Rain from Gholdengo, a Pokemon that it struggles with already.
- The defensive investment lets Amoonguss survive Hurricane from Pelipper, 150-Base Power Last Respects from Basculegion-M, Blood Moon from Life Orb Ursaluna-B, Guts-boosted Facade from Ursaluna, and Flare Blitz from Incineroar. 27 Speed IVs let it underspeed the Ursaluna formes in Trick Room.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Teambuilding
============
- Amoonguss generally likes bulkier partners that can play long games with lots of switching because of its ability to find a time to sleep an important part of the opposing team in order to allow a partner like Gholdengo or Kingambit to set up and sweep.
- Incineroar is a great partner for Amoonguss, as it switches into the Fire- and Ice-type attacks that threaten Amoonguss, lowers opposing Pokemon's Attack with Intimidate, which makes Amoonguss even harder to KO, and can help Amoonguss find times to switch out in order to get healing from Regenerator with Fake Out and Parting Shot. Porygon2 is another strong partner, setting Trick Room for Amoonguss while benefiting from Amoonguss redirecting Fighting-type attacks that threaten it and Taunt, which could prevent Porygon2 from setting Trick Room or healing with Recover.
- Amoonguss is very weak into Pokemon that it cannot put to sleep like Gholdengo, Safety Goggles Incineroar, and Rillaboom, as its attacks will not be doing very much damage while its foes can freely set up or attack into its teammates. Incineroar can help with this, since it can threaten Gholdengo and Rillaboom with Flare Blitz and remove opposing Safety Goggles with Knock Off.
Strategy Comments
============
- Amoonguss mainly works as a bulky support Pokemon. Ideally, it can find value at any point in the game, as healing from Sitrus Berry and Regenerator let it stay healthy.
- Amoonguss's presence on a team works to force the opponent to bring Pokemon that cannot be put to sleep. This can be taken advantage of by not bringing Amoonguss game one of a set but bringing it game two where the opponent could respect it less.
- Amoonguss's biggest checks are Pokemon that it cannot put to sleep with Spore, whether it's Gholdengo, Grass-types like Rillaboom and opposing Amoonguss, or Safety Goggles Pokemon like Incineroar and Kingambit. This can be played around by pivoting around Spore immunities with Amoonguss to try and find a time to put an important Pokemon to sleep.
