Amphabulous Dragon/Fairy/Steel Core! (An Defensive OU team)

Hey guys, it's daedalus1103, and welcome to my first OU RMT! After spending quite some time in the UU meta, I decided to dabble in OU a little bit, just to see how I liked it. So I decided to try a defensive core I found in a thread that used Mega Ampharos, a pokemon I have been wanting to use for quite some time. I took another defensive core and mashed the two together to make my defensive OU team, which actually did pretty well! And, without further ado, here is my OU team!

Pictures (probably) coming soon!
Edits in bold

Skarmory @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 216 Def / 40 Spd
Impish Nature
- Defog
- Brave Bird
- Stealth rock - Credit to rosenfeldius and forestflamerunner
- Roost
So here is skarmory, the first part of my DSF core. He can take physical hits really well that clefable doesn't want to take. Leftovers gives him some passive recovery, making his survivability a little better. Whirlwind can phaze most setup sweepers besides Mega Charizard X, or just force out immediate problems to my team. Roost let's Skarmory stay around even after his leftovers get knocked off. Brave bird is so I'm not complete taunt bait, and defog gets rid of hazards, and while my team is not weak to them, they certainly don't appreciate the damage.

Ampharos-Mega @ Ampharosite
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 HP / 80 SAtk / 176 SDef
Calm Nature
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Dragon Pulse
- Focus Blast
- Volt Switch

The second part of my DSF core is none other than the majestic Mega-Amphabulous! Mega Ampharos has some EV's invested in bulk, because his low speed and lack of recovery isn't doing him any favors in the long run. Volt switch is a powerful STAB for his majesty, allowing him to pivot and retain momentum. Dragon Pulse is his main STAB, tearing through things like wet toilet paper. Focus Blast and Hidden Power Fire hit miscellaneous threats like bisharp, scizor, and ferrothorn.

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Focus Blast- credit to rosenfeldius
- Moonblast
- Soft-boiled

Here is Clefable, my fickle fairy type, and the third part of my DSF core. She is also my setup sweeper. When she gets the opportunity, she can set up on any wall, and then proceed to totally demolish teams, thanks to Magic Guard, which prevents and hazard or condition damage. Calm mind is my main boosting move, and Soft-Boiled can help keep me alive longer. Moonblast is her main STAB, that is mainly unresisted, except for Steel, which Focus Blast takes care of, in addition to nailing Heatran, a common Clefable switchin.

Landorus-Therian @ Assault Vest
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Knock Off
- Stone Edge
- U-turn

Straying away from my main core into my second core, we have assault vest Landorus T! I had never used AV Lando, but this guy does a great job dealing with a lot of threats that destroy my team, while carrying a lot of offensive presence at the time. His AV effectively lets him deal with all of the special mons in the tier bar Keldeo, including Zard Y, Aegislash and lando I without hp ice. Earthquake is his main STAB that destroys lots of mons like Aegi, Bisharp, and just pokemon lando doesn't have coverage for. Stone Edge stops all bird spam like Talonflame and M Pinsir. Knock off cripples walls well and destroys the occasional Gengar, alakazam, or even the Deo's. U-turn lets Lando switch out of a bad position into a mon that deals with whatever's out.

Rotom-Wash @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
- Volt Switch
- Hydro Pump
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Trick

Now, the next part of my second core is Rotom Wash! I honestly thought I would hate using him, considering he was essentially on every team at the beginning of the generation, but after using him, I can say he's provided valuable support to my team. Not much to say here. Standard Scarftom, Hydro Pump for STAB, Volt Switch to pivot, trick to mess up various pokes, and HP Ice for any Gliscor or landorus that thinks they can set up on

Chansey @ Eviolite - Credit to rosenfeldius and forestflamerunner
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Toxic/Heal Bell Depends on my M amphy set
- Seismic Toss
- Wish
- Soft-Boiled

Now, presenting the newest member of the team, Chansey! She provides some much needed special bulk to the team, while passing HUGE wishes to give some mons recovery that they would lack. If Mega Ampharos won't carry heal bell, she definitely will and help cure some annoying ailments my team can't bear to have. Seismic toss is for a reliable damage move, Wish and softboiled really help keep my crucial members that don't have recovery alive.

So, that is all for this team. Please leave all kinds of feedback, from praise to constructive criticism. Thanks for reading, and have a nice day!

Ah yes, the SkarmClefAmph. One of my favorites. Now, on to the rate:

Your team has Skarmory and Ferrothorn, both. I'd choose one or the other -- If phasing is that important to you, Skarmory; if passive damage, Ferrothorn. Either way, both on one team is typically a no-no. My suggestion here is replace one of them with Chansey -- Wish Support is a pretty big deal for Mega Amph if you want him to stay in the game for a good while. If I were you, I'd replace Ferrothorn with Chansey and replace Whirlwind on Skarmory with Stealth Rock. That way you have a SR setter and a method of removing them.

My recommended set:

Chansey @ Eviolite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunder Wave/Heal Bell
- Seismic Toss
- Wish
- Soft-Boiled

If you go with T-Wave, stick with HP Fire on Amph. If you go with Heal Bell, I recommend replacing HP Fire with Discharge -- Although I really recommend T-Wave (the drop in speed really helps Amph in the long run.)

The EVs on Clefable are wonky, I'm assuming you mean 252 SAtk, but that's really a suboptimal spread anyway. Here is, in my opinion, the best CM Clefable set and the best fit for this team:

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 232 HP / 252 Def / 24 Spd
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Flamethrower/Focus Blast
- Moonblast
- Soft-Boiled

The Speed EVs let you outspeed min speed Sylveon to give you an edge if locked into a Calm Mind war. If you go with Discharge on Amph, stick with Flamethrower, if you stick with HP Fire, go with FOCUS BLAST. That way, you aren't walled to hell and back by one of the most common Clefable switch-ins, Heatran, and you can still demolish Bisharp and Ferrothorn on the switch, and take a sizeable chunk out of Scizor. Highly, HIGHLY recommend.

As for Rotom-W, everything looks good except for HP Ice. Gliscor and Lando already aren't going to stay in on Rotom, that would be silly -- They don't want to take a Hydro Pump. I know it's common as hell, but Will-O-Wisp really is the best option here -- It cripples so, so many physical sweepers. Much more useful than HP Ice in this scenario, or really any scenario.

Lando-T looks good, although I personally prefer a Scarf or Band when I use him, if assault vest is working for you, stick with it.

Hope this was of help to you, good luck and happy laddering!

You haven't bumped, but I like your style and think this deserves some more rates besides my own, so I'm bumping for you. BUMP

You have six stallworts but half of them have offensive spreads. If your trying to muscle through your oppnents team, your going to need six different pokemon. Your pokemon have a ton of natural bulk. Highlight that.

That being said you have the ingredients for a good stall team, but you seem to be overprepared for physical threats and seem to be very vulnerable to special nukes such as Landurus-I.

One Pokemon at a time. Lets start with Ampharos. Unless the ev investment helps you secure an important KO that I'm unaware of, I'd suggest you max out SDef instead of investing in SAtk; every bit of bulk helps. Also, i'd switch out HIdden Power Fire with Heal Bell. Forretress and Ferrothorn get hit hard enough by focus blast anyways and you have better options against Scizor. Heal bell will prevent opposing stall teams that rely on status conditions from destroying you. Your set, imo, should look something like this

Ampharos-Mega @ Ampharosite
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 SDef
Calm Nature
- Heal Bell
- Dragon Pulse
- Focus Blast
- Volt Switch

Next, Clefable. I recommend you use unaware instead of magic guard mainly because sooner or later an oppenent will grab too many boosts for you to otherwise handle and its nice to have Clefable as a safety net when that happens. plus, Magic Guard is ass and deserves to rot in an arctic cave. Also, max out bulk. Clefable is too easily outsped and usually if it can set up one calm mind it can set up two so the special attack EVs are kind of meh.

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SDef / 4 Spd
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Flamethrower
- Moonblast
- Moonlight

skarmory and Rotom-W together cover almost everything Ferrothorn could hope to handle, making it unnecessary. I'd suggest moving SR over to Skarmory over Whirlwind and replacing Ferrothorn with The below Chansey:

Chansey @ Eviolite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Toxic
- Seismic Toss
- Wish
- Soft-Boiled

chansey helps you handle a lot of random special attackers such as Landorus, Greninja, and Latios that would otherwise molest your team. wish support is priceless forr your team considering how many members lack reliable recovery, while toxoc allows you to rack up damage while you sit back and heal up, which is just plain awesome.

Next, Choice Scarf Rotom-W isn't the best set for your team. i'd recommend going with the physically defensive set:

Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 Def
Bold Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Pain Split
- Will-O-Wisp

This change will allow you to deal with pinsir and talonflame a lot better and will take pressure off Landorus-T for you. Will-O-Wisp is also incredible since it basically takes a physical attacker out of the game right then and there and really helps swing momentum your way against offensive teams.

Finally, change Landorus's EV spread to mirror Clefable's. The change in bulk is very noticeable.

Yeah, so thats it for the rate. Good luck with your team!! I really like how you decided to think outside the box by using AV Lando and Ampharos. Stall teams can get repetitive at times.

Why thank you, I really appreciate it!
Ok, looking at things now, I am definitely going to switch out ferro for chansey, who is a cleric and special defensive monster. I was thinking about this too, I just didn't know who to switch her for. Switching the Clefable Evs around and switching flamethrower to focus blast is bound to happen. Ill think a little more about the rest, including the physically defensive Rotom Wash, heal bell amphy, and which clefable spread to use. Will edit and get back when I have a computer.

Toxic on Blissey isn't bad, but T-Wave is very useful as it allows Amphy to outspeed unboosted threats like Zard-X and Dragonite, to name a few, and other threats that could damage Amphy if they outspeed him, but can get KO'd just as easily if not.

As for Rotom, I'd say keep the Trick set, but change the EV spread to make it physically defensive. That way you can really mess up setup sweepers, and severely cripple the blobs, who otherwise give some problems to this team.

Heal Bell on Amphy isn't much good. It just isn't. I've tried it, and es no bueno. You don't want to use a cleric move on something that can't instantly recover as well. One of the purposes of the SkarmClefAmph core is to work around status; Skarm can't be poisoned, Clef doesn't give a flying fuck about poison or burns, and Amph can't be paralyzed. If you really feel like status is a big deal though, fit it on Chansey somewhere -- possibly over T-Wave, or Seismic Toss, but I really don't feel heal bell is super necessary here.

Also, if you're running CM Clef, go physically defensive. The set I provided really is the best spread. Also, stick with Magic Guard. If you have Trick Rotom + Will-O-Wisp, you've already got most setup sweepers covered.
