Anyone around here play Guild Wars?

Probably one of the best, if not the best, competitive game I've ever played. The learning curve is kind of sharp at the moment, as the game is pretty dead, but it's still an amazing game. Just wondering if anyone around here has played it. If you do play, post here and we'll talk. I'd be up for guesting for any guild, and some new buds to play with never hurts either. There's a really nice guild for learning, so if anyone's interested on getting in to the PvP scene, just PM me and I'll set you up.

I used to play GW a ton, as a mesmer, but I eventually got bored with it waiting on the arrival of Guild Wars 2. I was more into the PVE side of things and I only did Alliance Battles as a form of PvP, though I did occasionally do Random arena.

Oh man, are you guys missing out. The organized PvP (Mostly Guild vs Guild, but sometimes Team Arenas) is absolutely amazing, but as I said, the learning curve is pretty steep. It's definitely worth playing though, especially if you already have bought the game.

I played this a little bit about 2 years ago but was incredibly unimpressed with the way the game handled certain aspects of the game, not to mention that they do little to nothing to balance the game to make all classes equal as there are obvious "best" combinations (at least there were when I played).

World of Warcraft is leagues better, in both PVP and PVE (questing / raiding for those unfamiliar with the term) ... but it's true what you say, you get what you pay for, and this is free monthly soooo.... yeah.

Uh, not to flame or anything, but you said a few things that show you obviously haven't explored the game enough. One, the game gets monthly balance updates to nerf what's currently dominating the metagame, as well as buffs to push new things into the metagame. Although, the nature of the game tends to favor defensive builds, so I will give you that. Saying WoW has better PvP than Guild Wars makes absolutely no sense to me. WoW has better PvE, no question, but the organization, as well as the limit of only 8 skills on your bar, means that PvP is much, much more tactical than simple raids and such. The classes are pretty well balanced. I can probably give you an example on every class combination being popular at some point in the metagame, except dumb things. Assassins aren't used in GvG much, again, due to their nature, but they are used extensively in other forms of PvP. Hero Battles come to mind. PvE really gives a bad representation of the game, as dumb things like Permaform Assassins break the game.

I pretty much played PvE only, and would always be alone....So i'd get bored fast. That, and my characters sucked, so i would get bored of them and just keep restarting and restarting.... :/

I had tremendous fun with this game, despite mainly doing PvE. I didn't have nearly as much fun with WoW as with Guildwars, so your criticism is lost on me. I don't think WoW is even that great to begin with, but who cares. Play what you enjoy more.

That being said, I did play PvP a bit and I wasn't particularly fond with it. I didn't "miss out" on anything; it just wasn't something I enjoyed.

Despite being mainly mesmer, I also didnt have issues finding constant party's to join in Guildwars. The team aspect was really fun in PvE.

I played for a while, both PvE and PvE, but I haven't played since around January (more because I got lost in schoolwork, found TF2, and don't feel like waiting for hours to reinstall GW after having reinstalled Windows on my computer than because it isn't a great game). If anyone else here still plays I might get back in again - once I'm in college I may be able to get a mic too.

I've really enjoyed it, although I think they went about making PvE difficult (esp. hard mode) in the wrong way - by sheer numbers and giving them the wrong bonuses. I personally hate the notion of tanking (and with that, being forced to have a tank) and think it really takes away from the game. Buffs like fast-casting and halved duration for conditions and hexes were IMO the wrong way to make things harder - all that does is take even more away from the usefulness of skillful shutdown. I think it would be much better if mobs were smaller but more balanced - obviously they need to be more powerful/numerous than the human's group though.

@LonelyNess: I agree with Upside about comparing GW and WoW. To be honest, I've been rather unimpressed with World of Warcraft (although I, too, probably haven't played enough to get a good idea of the full game). World of Warcraft probably has better PvE, although from what I played in the trial, I didn't find its PvE all that impressive. It has a very immersing lore and quests and what not, but the gameplay was rather dull. It's probably in large part due to my low level, but the fact that you have to spend so much time levelling up until you get to do anything fun is a real setback for me (especially coming from Guild Wars' level cap of 20, which I think is great). Although Guild Wars is far from perfect (it's still really good, especially for being pretty much the first game of its kind), their skill > time spent model is what makes me prefer GW over WoW. A few of my friends play WoW, and their discussions pretty much boiled down to their levels, their equipment, and how long they grinded and suffered to get their equipment. On the other hand, just about every GW discussion I've had is about strategy (my friend and I have discussed equipment, but it was purely for looks). My PvP experience hasn't been very competitive (mostly PuG or heroway HA - heroes are surprisingly more effective compared to the average HA PuG member; every time I've gotten to halls was with heroes :/), but even then there's a HUGE amount of strategy, teamwork, and coordination that goes into every PvP match. GW always has some imbalances, but I definitely got a whole lot more than what I paid for (and I have all 3 campaigns + expansion).

I did/still do from time to time when I am bored. However, the main problem for me is that PvP isn't really possible unless you have 2 or more of the expansions. I'm a multiplayer guy. I don't usually buy games unless they have some form of multiplayer competition. Therefore, the fact that I had to pay $100 to enjoy a game kind of irked me. I used to play it like a madman, though.

I dunno, you can throw together a Shock Axe or WoH with purely Proph. I'm sure if I thought about it for more than three seconds I could put together a dom mesmer, crip shot (LR over Natural Stride), etc. They may not be dominant at the moment but they work. I play mostly HB these days because my guild went downhill GvG-wise.

I'm Teutonic Paladin in-game if anyone wants a guest flagger or bitch midline. I'm not outstanding, but I'm UAX and I know what I'm supposed to do.

Haha I can't believe I didn't see this thread before; I've been waiting for it to come up for like three years.

Yeah I used to play guild wars a whole damn lot. I own all the expansions and have beaten them all besides Eye of the North (I stopped playing when one of my friends quit). Coincidentally I just started playing again like two days ago, and it's still pretty fun. The PvE is less 'epic' than that of WoW, but I would argue that it is superior in the sense of being a well-balanced cooperative game. Things like the level cap at 20 and the ease of obtaining both max stat items and their customizations ensures that players pass missions based on skillful play and clever tactics rather than endless grinding and item searching to power their character up. I admit the stories have not been amazing, but they kept my attention (at least I never skipped any cutscenes, lol).

The main draw is the PvP, which - as Upside pointed out - is (still!) updated weekly to balance it out. A pretty cool result of this is that the PvP metagames are always changing as new strategies must be constantly devoloped. As far as I have seen since I got back, none of the same builds are used in Hero's Ascent at all. A fantastic change I noticed when I started playing a few days ago is that some skills have different effects between PvE and PvP, which obviously gives more freedom in balancing the game. It's a but funny that LN would bring up WoW having better PvP than Guild Wars, since (from what I have heard) Blizzard basically stole its current arena PvP system from Guild Wars (but arenanet is stealing WoW's PvE for GW2 so heh). Also LN you should come back and play; all those retarded builds get nerfed pretty soon after they are created, especially now that pve and pvp skills are separate (though there was definitely some crazy shit before...I still laugh when I remember soloing Underworld [at the time the most dangerous area of the game] with my Monk).

Anyway, to sum up: I would love to play with some other Smogoners, I ironically never really got into the guild aspect of the game and have in fact never done a guild battle...though I was pretty experienced with Hero's Ascent for a while. If someone wants to play some GW with me and maybe show me the ropes - or heh get shown the ropes - I would be happy to!

EDIT: lol moot I would love to be in a Smogon guild with you
EDIT2: and anyone else

If we make a guild I'll definitely consider reinstalling my account. I think my best character is a level 12-14 Ranger, though.

In terms of PvP though I'm a mean hand at a Fire Elementalist. >:D

Just remembered. I only have Nightfall. xD

Oh cool, a Guild Wars thread!
I'm mostly into PvE, I'm just too sore a loser to get into PvP, but maybe if I could get some advice I might try it.
LonelyNess, you can get all three regular games combined for $50 now, if you were convinced to start again.
I would be interested in joining a Smogon Guild, it might give me more motivation to work on PvP.

I would definitely also be interested in a Smogon guild. Anyone up for creating it? I also would really love to GvG - I've only played a few games, and they were pretty much all random games with rather stereotypical PvEers who bring skills like Mending and Rebirth! My brother and I used to do a lot of randomway in HA - ironically the only times I've gotten to halls were with randomway, and I'm now r5 (my brother's r7) thanks almost exclusively to randomway.

Nightfall is probably one of the better campaigns to only have (well, it was when I was playing up until December; I'm still trying to get up to date with the huge amount of skill updates). I started off with only Factions, which really sucked, but now I have everything (except for the Bonus Mission Pack and the random new things that don't really matter like makeovers and storage)

Oh yeah, my in-game name is Aanli Puff (now all my Pokemon-related character names are suddenly fitting!)

I can play pretty much any midliner or backliner, except Necro (I don't have a problem with Necro, I just haven't played it much). I should have everything worth using unlocked, except for some of the elites that were only recently buffed and I thus never bothered to unlock (I think Mirror of Ice is one of these?), but I have Balthazar Faction anyways.

Fuck it, let's do this. Join #gwars on irc.synirc.net and we'll start planning a smogon guild. :D

TAY and LN, I'd love your help organizing this if I can ask for it.

I considered playing Guild Wars for a while, the idea of an MMO without grind (and free after you pay for the disks) really appealed to me. But nowadays I just don't have enough hours in the day :(

It was great "playing" with you guys! TAY and I confirmed that our guild hall does feature lovely smoggy purple miasma :)

Surgo, it really is alot of fun. You don't even need the beginning grind if you start in PVP- it levels the character to the cap for you and you can start in intense GVG battles from the get-go.

It was so cool to get the starting corps of our [SMOG] guild going! I'm really looking forward to our future guild battle. Now we just need some more recruits. >:D

I'm planning on getting online tomorrow...I'll be making a 20 for PVP and then just log that.

Played it, got bored with it at about lv17 (and a bit of GvG stuff) -- really wasn't huge on the game mechanics, always felt a touch clunky to me.

I thought about playing this game for years but never tried it. I feel the same as Surgo on this so I have a few questions if you guys dont mind answering. Psst I mostly care for PvP only.

-Is the PvP strategic or is it like Runescape where the guy that spent 4 years vs 2 years grinding wins 90% of the time?

-Does your gear matter much in a fight/duel? I've noticed in many MMOs the guy with the better gear pretty much always wins

EDIT: and the gear takes fucking FOREVER TO GET. I just wana play an MMO where I can actually have a life and still play sometimes. I don't have the time to spend weeks getting gear which is why I hate WoW.

-Does it take a while to reach the level cap? Some games take YEARS

-Do certain builds completely outclass others? Is it possible to do well with a wide veriety of builds? I'm not going to say all builds because I'm sure some of them suck at PvP.

-When the hell's GW2 coming out lol I heard about that ages ago

-Are you able to run around out in the open and attack people basically anywhere? Or are there just certain areas/arenas where you can PvP?

-How long do fights/duals typically last? Is it easy to overwhelm/get overwhelmed really early in a fight?

-Do you have to have a damn good computer to run this game? What turns me off from lots of MMO's is that your computer has to have more power than your fucking car to run the damn thing and not lag.

Heh sorry for all the questions but I'm actually considering getting this. Quite frankly the no grinding and go straight to PvP sounds good. All of the MMOs I've played kinda sucked honestly and I've been thinking about trying Warhammer Online but I doubt my computer could run that shit.

The PvP IS strategic. You're limited to 8 skills and level 20, so your skill pool and your team's skill pool as well as your ability to kite affect the outcome.

The armor DOES matter, but it isn't too difficult to get the best armor possible. I don't believe its too expensive.

Again, the combination of your build and your team's build affects the outcome. If you have good synergy, you'll probably win. There are probably certain spells that are better than others, but for the most part, each is unique in its own way.

There is no exact release date for Guild Wars 2, but it is expected to come out in 2010 or 2011. A simple Google search would have answered that question.

No, you typically cannot attack someone at random. You have to enter a special area called an arena in which you battle gladiator-style. This is to keep it fair. It would be gay to just attack some low-level person at random and steal his stuff.

PvP matches last longer depending on how many people are in the match. Some have four people per team, some have eight, and then you have Alliance Battles, which are six teams of four members, which are then split into two teams (so twelve on twelve). If your team is stupid, then yes, you will get overwhelmed. But that seems to be the case with most competitive games.

No, you don't need a very good computer. Mine will run it off of an Intel chipset for a graphics card, which is saying something.

Heh, I never thought so many Smogoners play/played GW. I played it quite a bit a year or two ago, mostly as a PvP player, although I haven't touched it in ages due to it getting stale.

Wow, I just let this thread die. I figured it was over with. I had no idea so many people played! How did the smogon guild go? If any of you are still interested I would totally be up for guesting with you guys and showing you the ropes (Assuming you haven't played before). I've only been playing for about a year, so I'm not amazing at the game, but I can hold my own at a top 300 level. Also, as I said before, if anyone is really interested in learning competitive GvG, there's a nice learning guild located here called Virtual Love. Anyways, someone post here or PM me or something. I can never get enough GW!

EDIT: IF YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT PLAYING MAKE SURE YOU READ THIS.

Gw has the option to make "PvP only" Characters. Basically, they can only do PvP, but start at the max level, and can create infinite amounts of maximized gear for free :D. It's an awesome system

EDIT EDIT: My IGN is U P S I D E. Hit me up whenever you need someone for TA/GvG/HA/anything.
