Thanks to its Dragon typing and Thick Fat ability, Appletun plays an important role as a Fire-resistant Pokemon on Grass-type teams. Its high HP combined with its decent Special Defense allows it to comfortably tank special hits that aren't super effective such as Dragapult's Shadow Ball and Hydreigon's Dark Pulse. Investment in Special Defense is chosen because most Fire-type attacks are special and Appletun's most valuable trait is resisting Fire. Recover combined with Leech Seed, Protect, and Leftovers can be problematic to deal with, as it gives Appletun a lot of ways to recover HP and stall out the foe. Protect is also very important for scouting Choice users such as Dracozolt, Dragapult, and Hydreigon, allowing Grass teams to take advantage by making the right switch. Appletun's bulk allows it to pivot in on attacks that don't threaten to OHKO it such as Gengar's Focus Blast and gain momentum by using Leech Seed, followed up by Protect to scout the opponent's next move and gain more recovery from Leech Seed and Leftovers.

Ferrothorn forms a great defensive core with Appletun, (AC) as they cover each other's weaknesses. Appletun resists Fire-type attacks that threaten Ferrothorn and the rest of the team, while Ferrothorn is immune to Poison, resists Dragon, and takes neutral damage from Ice-, Flying-, and Bug-type attacks. This comes into play against threats such as Galarian Darmanitan, Choice Specs Hydreigon, and Indeedee, which have the coverage to threaten both Appletun and Ferrothorn, but Protect allows them to scout which move they're going for and make the appropriate switch. Ferrothorn can also set up entry hazards, which Appletun can take advantage of by using Leech Seed to force switches and Protect to scout Choice users, resulting in the opposing team taking a lot of damage. Whimsicott also covers Appletun's Dragon weakness and threatens Dragon-type teams, which are hard for Grass to deal with. Whimsicott also appreciates Appletun's Leech Seed to get recovery when it switches in on a Dragon-type attack. In addition, Whimsicott can use Encore on Pokemon trying to setup or lock them into a recovery or status move. Rotom-C threatens Flying-types, most notably Corviknight and Togekiss, which pose huge threats to Grass. Rillaboom is a good partner and great Choice Scarf user that can threaten Ferrothorn with Superpower, which otherwise would be very hard for Grass teams to break. Choice Scarf Rillaboom can outspeed and threaten some problematic Pokemon such as Hydreigon, Choice Scarf Gardevoir, and Dragapult.

Name examples of hits that Appletun can take to describe exactly what the Special Defense investments are for.

Apple Acid lowers Special Defense, not Special Attack.

Would highlight Choice locked Pokemon such as Dragapult as something Protect is good against.

Appletun covers up Ferrothorn's Fire weakness which is crucial. I know it's a trait that also belongs to the rest of the Grass team but the fact that Appletun is a Fire resist is instrumental as to why Ferrothorn and Appletun are so hard to break as a defensive core. Could also talk about how Ferrothorn is immune to Poison attacks and Toxic, which Appletun both hates dealing with.

I would talk about how Rillaboom can take on faster offensive Pokemon that Appletun hates dealing with and give some examples.

I think there needs to be more on scouting being why Protect is so essential to this set. Choice mons are everywhere and scouting that out is part of why the core is so strong.

I'd like to see a bit more outside of just moves in the first paragraph. Talk about pivoting Appletun in, using Leech Seed to avoid losing too much momentum, etc. Stuff like that.

Can we note that most Fire-type damage is special right now, which is why it's so much more valuable for Appletun to be specially defensive?

I would absolutely use an example of how the Ferrothorn + Appletun core comes into play. Vs Darm, vs Specs Hydreigon, vs Indeedee, vs Mamo, etc. For hazards, yea they're useful for everyone, but you should make ir more clear why Appletun specifically benefits from them. Forcing switches with Leech Seed and Protect blocking Choice users means you rack up a ton of hazard damage

Worth noting for Whimsicott that Appletun's Leech Seed is great for supporting it. Also should mention Whimsicott's anti-stallbreak capabilities.
