Attempt at Offense! (OU)

This team is meant to hit hard and hit fast, while maintaining some stability with a couple more bulkier hitters. I have an absence of Stealth Rock, or residual damage in general, and I was considering the addition of Tentacruel or Skarmory for that purpose. Here's the team and thanks for your time!

Gengar; Timid (Focus Sash)
252 Sp Atk/ 252 Spe/ 6 HP
- Shadow Ball
- Thunderbolt
- Hypnosis
- Destiny Bond

Usually my lead Pokemon; the basic Hypnosis to cripple and attack with Shadow Ball and Thunderbolt until Focus Sash activates. Destiny Bond hopefully gives me a two for one trade. I'm considering a Trick Gengar to help Azelf, Infernape or Gyarados set up.

Azelf; Timid (Life Orb)
252 Sp. Atk/ 252 Spe./ 6 HP
- Nasty Plot
- Psychic
- Flamethrower
- Grass Knot

Sets up and attacks with the variety of type coverage. I've never been a fan of the suicide lead since I feel that Azelf has so much more potential than that.

Infernape; Jolly (Life Orb)
252 Atk/ 252 Spe./ 6HP
- Swords Dance
- Close Combat
- Mach Punch
- Fire Punch

Similarly to Azelf, it sets up and attacks on the physical spectrum. Along with Gyarados, it covers each others weaknesses to an extent and provides for a late game push. Having trouble bringing it out to set up due to how fragile it is, so I might just forego a Choice Band/Scarf set...

Gyarados; Adamant (Leftovers)
156 HP/ 108 Atk / 100 Def / 144 Spe
- Dragon Dance
- Ice Fang
- Waterfall
- Earthquake

With all the offense packed into a team, I feel that Gyarados can sacrifice some power for durability. I have turned around many battles with this Pokemon and is the best tank in this team so to speak. I send it out on a Pokemon it definitely scares, set up, and do as much damage as possible.

Metagross; Adamant (Leftovers)
252 HP/ 236 Atk/ 20 Def
- Meteor Mash
- Earthquake
- Bullet Punch
- Pursuit

Similarly to Gyarados, I decided to add more durability where I can, and in this case, Metagross. With it's weakness to Fire and Ground, it should be easy to predict a switch in for almost all of my other Pokemon. Possibily going to remove Pursuit for Explosion to end things off with a bang.

Heatran; Timid (Choice Scarf)
252 Sp. Atk/ 252 Spe./ 6HP
- Fire Blast
- Dragon Pulse
- Earth Power
- Dark Pulse

My main revenge killer for this team, and absorbs the fire weakness of my Metagross. With two Pokemon having Levitate and one Pokemon with the Flying type, Heatran should be safe and sound on the weakness end.

Dude, you honestly just threw six offensive pokes together didn't you? You have weaknesses all over the place. You're gyara weak, mence weak, t-tar weak, Zapdos weak, you have no electric resist... Do I really have to go on?

Here's how you build an OK offensive team.

1. pick an offensive poke

2. check out it's weaknesses and resistances and see what poke it works well with

3. try and cover most if not every type with the next two or 3 pokes maybe in combination with your first 2. Don't feel obliged to choose the movesets just yet.

4. go through the threat list and see what you're weak to, choose the last 1 or 2 pokes with the purpose of being decent counters (that involves being able to switch in safely) to those threats.

5. Choose your moveset/EV's etc. on your team so you cover nearly all the threats. Make sure Latias has thunderbolt for example if it's your main answer to bulky waters and you don't have calm mind. If you Have any major weaknesses you didn't see before and you can't get around that by just changing your sets, feel free to replace a poke.

That's the best advice I can give you, because honestly, there's more to building offensive teams than this.

Hello!

Against offensive teams, a variety of threats have a relatively easy time sweeping your team, and by easy, I mean really easy. These threats include Dragon Dance Gyarados, Dragon Dance Kingdra, Calm Mind Suicune Suicune, Dragon Dance Tyranitar, Dragon Dance Salamence. Out of the 6 aforementioned threats, all 6 can easily set up on your you. For example, It is extremely easy for the above mentioned threats to come into your Heatran locked into Flamethrower/Earth Power after you revenge kill a Pokemon. With most of your Pokemon, you do not obtain enough neutral coverage to allow your Pokemon to overcome some of their common counters. For Example, you don't have Focus Blast on Gengar meaning Tyranitar has a fun time with Gengar allowing him to Dragon Dance as you possibly use destiny Bond and then he keeps on Dragon Dancing and sweeps the reamaning portion of your team. With the moves you currently have on Metagross, you cannot do anything to Gyarados/Suicune/Kingdra, all of which can easily set up on you and sweep you. Other Pokemon such as Life Orb Starmie with Hydro Pump ThunderBolt, Psychic Recover have a field day with your team as it kills Gengar with Psychic, Gyarados with ThunderBolt, 2HKO's Metagross with Hydro Pump OHKO's Heatran with Hydro Pump. Once the above mentioned SubCune gets a Substitute up and starts using Calm Mind, you will be unable to do much to it thanks to Suicune's amazing durability. Dragon Dance Kingdra has tons of opportunities to set up( Heatran, Metagross, Infernape) and then, you are in big trouble once it fires off a Dragon Dance. Overall, offensive Pokemon that I listed have way to many chances to set up on you and you should be trying to prevent that. The biggest weakness is Bulky Waters as I already explained and you are going to have to sacrifice 2 or 3 Pokemon to eventually wear them down. I can go on about your Bulky Water weakness, however, that is not the only weakness you have. As I said above, Dragon Dance Tyranitar has a field day with your team. Do not rely on always having Infernape or using Destiny Bond on Gengar to kill these threats because that just allows them to freely set up once they find out you have moves like Destiny Bond. Of course with Pokemon like ScarfTran and Infernape, it is rather difficult for you to not let them set up on you.

Basically, against Offensive teams which are currently very popular, you are going to have a hard time. For instance, you Pursuit your opponents Latias/Gengar/Azelf with Metagross and you say to yourself "Yay!, I finally killed it", then they bring in a Dragon Dance Gyarados, they get a Dragon Dance up, and you say "Aww man" and you lose a majority of your team. The only thing that can really make use of free turns given by your other Pokemon sacrificing themselves to take out an opposing troubling Pokemon is Gyarados. What do you decide to do if he happens to get killed. On offensive teams, you put Pokemon that can effectively take advantage of free turns with their good resistances and bulk. Examples of these are Dragon Dance Salamence, Agility Metagross, Swords Dance Lucario, Mixed Dragonite, Sub Petaya Agility Empoleon, Sub Salac Heatran etc. Pokemon that can make great use of the free turns usually tend to they get in a sweep sweep while at the same time, preventing your opponent to set up on you.

Now that I have established what is wrong with this team, I shall give you some options that you can take into consideration. You must understand the problem before you can attempt to solve it so here is a quick recap.
  • Too many Pokemon have many opportunities to set up on you and cause some issues without having to use any prediction.
  • Make use of Pokemon's most useful moves and take advantage of them.
So, first of all, to help you with your Salamence and Gyarados weakness, I suggest using Stealth Rock somewhere. You have 4 options on which Pokemon to use Stealth Rock on. Those three options are Metagross, Heatran, Azelf and Infernape. Let me explain them in a brief sentence. Heatran makes for an excellent lead acapble of taking on many common leads such as Metagross, Jirachi, Azelf etc. Azelf is shut down by Choice Scarfed Jirachi, Heatran, and Metagross leads as all of them have an effective way of killing Azelf. Infernape is another great lead capable of killing a variety of popular leads like Heatran, Metagross and Jirachi and can also get rid of Focus Sash's effect with Fake Out. Metagross is Metagross. For your team, I suggest using Heatran as your lead. if you make Infernape and Azelf your lead, you are going to lose your wall breakers meaning you will have quite a difficult time dealing with Stall teams. For heatran, use Stealth Rock, Fire Blast, Earth Power, Hidden Power Grass/Explosion with 252 SpA 252 Spe 6 HP with Shuca Berry. There is a little twist to this set, Hidden Power Grass. With the rise of Swampert leads lately, Hidden Power Grass allows you to kill Swampert leads. Explosion can also be an alternative option if you want to gt rid of Blissey and Latias who like switching in on Heatran. Since you have now lost your fast revenge killer, make Gengar your revenge killer by giving it a Choice Scarf. This will help you deal with your Gyarados and Salamence weakness. Gengar is able to outpace Gyarados and Salamence before and after a Dragon Dance and kill both with ThunderBolt/Hidden Power Ice respectively. Use ThunderBolt, Shadow Ball, Hidden Power Ice, Trick/Focus Blast, Timid Nature, 252 Spe, 252 SpA, 6 HP. HP Ice and ThunderBolt give Gengar excellent coverage and will allow you to revenge kill Mence and Gyarados. Focus blast/Trick is up to your personal prefernece. With Trick, you are able to disable the walls that switch into Gengar regularly such as Blissey while Focus Blast allows you to deal more damage to Tyranitar and Heatran.

Alright, after thinking for a while, I suggest using a support Metagross with Reflect, Explosion/Thunder Punch, Meteor Mash, Earthquake with 252 HP/112 Atk/136 Def/8 Spd with an Impish nature.I know that looks like a straneg set but let me explain my reasoning. You have Dragon Dance Gyarados, Swords Dance Infernape, Nasty Plot Azelf, all sweepers whom rely on using a stat boosting move. Now, with Reflect being set up by Metagross, you allow your Pokemon to increase their survivability! That means you will have more opportunity to set up and will be less vulnerable to your opponents attacks. This Metagross also serves as a pretty good check to Tyranitar while behind a Reflect and can also Explode on those annoying Salamence's and Gyarados's that give you a hard time. You can also use ThunderPunch if you want more coverage against Bulky Waters. This is an example of how bulky this can be. With Reflect up, +2 Kingdra only manages to do a mere 23% to Metagross with Waterfall. On gyarados, use Stone Edge over Ice Fang. Stone Edge gives Gyarados superior coverage as with the move, you have something to hit opposing Gyarados while still dealing super effective damage to Salamence, Zapdos and a variety of other Flying Pokemon.

Good Luck with your team.

I agree with him. Probably put a scarf flygon somewhere? provides an electric resist and can help revenge the DDing pokes

You really had no idea what you were doing lol, anyways if you are going to use just 6 sweepers then i recommend an SR lead then 5 pokemon that spam attacks like crazy... 2 set upers are good. For you i would recommend Gyarados and AgiliGross. Both these pokemon wreck havok and don't use a bulkygyara spread if you going to use all out offense. Heatran should also be Naive Nature with Explosion so you can go boom on things you are frustrated on. Azelf is garbage this metagame with all the Latias running and Scizor w/Bullet Punch. So i recommend a Latias if you really want something that sets up then use CM Latias if not then i would either use Specs or Scarf, maybe even try a gimick Psycho Shift one idk xD. Use an SR lead like Aerodactyl so you can actually bring down 2hko's to OHKO's and 3hko's to 2hko's maybe. Stealth Rocks is a must this metagame ( Mostly with offense ).
