Australian Open Thread

How many of you here follow tennis and how many of you are watching the Australian Open? I watch tennis and I'm also watching the Australian open. Whom are you going to cheer? I'm cheering Nadal. He has been my favourite player ever since he won his first French Open and bravely challenged Federed. If Nadal is eliminated, I shall cheer Murray for the sake of Britain. So on whose side are you going to be?

I'm cheering for Nadal. He's always been my favorite player. Just the way he thinks is a good part of how he wins. It's just amazing, some of the things he's come out from in matches.

Went yesterday, and got smacked in the head by a giant metal umbrella because it was so damn windy.
Gonzales looks to be in alright form, but some of his backhand looks a bit shaky. I guess the swirling winds on Margaret Court Arena wouldn't have helped.
For me, Nadal looks to be in too good of a shape to bet against. Others that have impressed me: Tsonga, Federer.

Hoping Roddick wins, he has also been my favourite player :).

Guys like Monfils, Tsonga and Murray really impress me though as I love their aggressive play styles

It's hard not to follow it in Australia so ofcourse I follow, besides I like watching Tennis, at least, if it's entertaining. I've known Roger Federer since like 2000 and once I actually knew all about tennis he won his first Wimbledon, so I've been barracking for him in all Grand Slams/Exhibitions/Minors/Masters since. Last year he had glandular fever, but this year he might come back but Murray has improved his game a lot since the US Open.

So the third round starts today and so far everything is as expected. In the mens I guess Nalbandian losing was the big upset but he has a habit of messing up should win games. My pick for the win is Murray. I think hes ready to win a slam, and is quite capable of defeating any of the big three (Nadal, Federer, Djokovic). An outsider chance could be Del Potro but as I type this he is a set down to Muller.

Watching Venus Williams lose last night was unexpected but gratifying (I like seeing new people win slams and Venus has enough). The women's tournament is very open this year and beside Serena being favourite imo, a host of girls could win it. I'll be hoping for Dementieva, who is on a winning streak has the ability to win a slam but has never done it. Also Kuznetsova is someone I have been following for years and deserves another slam.

Sad. Fedex is winning. I wanted Safin to win since that'll make the challenge for Nadal easier. Anyway, at this stage Nadal can beat anyone. Gilles Muller was so excellent but Del Porto defeated him quite easily after the first set loss. I was really impressed by the way Delic played against Djokovic and especially the base line drop shots. It is sad that he has been eliminated in a four set match. I really think Bernard Tomic and Amer Delic have a huge potential within them.

Nadal's made of awesome, Spain ftw!
Tennis joke: So i was playing tennis with a napkin the other day, and i said don't serviette!

That was a pretty good game yesterday. Too bad fed is going downhill... I still prefer to watch his games over nadal's though.

Nadal almost clearly overpowered Federer in that match... Federer's forehand was extremely weak relative to Nadal's and he committed too many errors (like being 30-0 on serving and then getting broken with 4 consecutive errors in the 5th set), which obviously bought about his defeat :(
At this rate, Federer can't even challenge Nadal on clay...

Nadal+Federer is great for tennis, as long as they keep producing finals like this I can see both taking their game to new levels like this, now they have two grand slam final classics. Federer is finallly facing someone who is a future great unlike Roddick, Safin, Philo..sis, Hewitt etc (not Agassi, Sampras and stuff at the end of their careers). Now he has a real challenge, and if he overcomes this challenge, and wins the French Open as well as a few more grand slams he'll be the best of all time IMO.

(Snow. Get the fuck in)

Federer is clearly getting demoralized - apparently, the Australian Open and Wimbledon is where he should be the contender. Unfortunately, this man named Nadal has been giving Federer his all, and Federer's career may see a rapid decline, if not a complete downhill slide, within the next few months.

Agreed to the French Open deal; unfortunately, Nadal is a brute on clay :/

Federer does not have a good chance of beating nadal on clay. IIRC Nadal has not lost a match at the french open, he grew up on the clay courts. IMO, Federers best shot is Wimbledon.

I hope he breaks Sampras's record though.
