Kingambit is a slow attacker that uses its good bulk and typing to tank hits from Pokemon like Calyrex-S, Lunala, and Terapagos, then respond with Dark- and Steel-type STAB attacks. Sucker Punch gives Kingambit a priority attack that it can use to get around its low Speed and that threatens Pokemon like the Calyrex formes. Tera Blast pairs with Tera Fairy to hit the Pokemon that wall Kingambit such as Urshifu-R and Iron Hands as well as Pokemon like Miraidon and Urshifu-S, while Low Kick is used to hit Pokemon that resist Steel- and Dark-type attacks such as Incineroar and Zamazenta-C. Assault Vest lets it survive attacks like Mystic Water Kyogre's Water Spout as well as getting 4HKOed by Calyrex-S's Astral Barrage most of the time. Tera Fairy gives Kingambit a resistance to Fighting-type attacks in addition to being a good defensive type that is neutral to most of the metagame.
Kingambit struggles into bulky Pokemon like Amoonguss and Incineroar that can easily survive an attack and respond with status moves like Will-O-Wisp or Spore. Offensive partners like Ursaluna-B and Miraidon help with this by threatening to OHKO Amoonguss and Incineroar, allowing Kingambit to clean up an endgame with Sucker Punch. Urshifu-R is another check for Kingambit, as it resists Kingambit's STAB attacks and can threaten it with Close Combat. Miraidon can threaten Pokemon like Mienshao and the Urshifu formes that threaten Kingambit. Miraidon also has the added benefit of blocking Spore from Amoonguss with Electric Terrain, which allows Kingambit to play more offensively. Calyrex-S is a good partner for Kingambit, as it appreciates Kingambit helping into opposing Calyrex-S and opposing Incineroar while Calyrex-S can threaten the Fighting-types that Kingambit struggles with like Mienshao. Calyrex-I can set Trick Room that Kingambit works well in while Calyrex-I threatens Amoonguss. Farigiraf is a good partner for Kingambit, as it prevents Fake Out and can set Trick Room for Kingambit while Incineroar, a Pokemon Farigiraf struggles with, doesn't want to switch into Kingambit and give it a Defiant boost.
