Azelf Returns!

Hey all,
I know, I know, I'm new to this community. I am learning and hope this community will help me. I have made loads of teams (16 in total) but none of them turned successful until I made up this team.

I use the old battling style. The battling style in D/P. I know, it's a bad thing, but once a habit always a habit right?

482.gif

I thought to myself, what could be a good lead? If you read, I said I use the D/P battling style, so I went ahead and chose D/P Azelf.

482.gif

Hmm, let's see. A fighting type, a dragon type, that dragon type has a good attack if it has a choice band, a chansey, wait! A dragion type that has a good attack if it has a choice band! This was a theory I was wanting to test. So, I did so.

I decided to bring a special sweeper in my team. He really packs a punch in ice teams, once even sweeping the whole ice team. Note later this guy is changed.

I ain't a fan of using very common pokemon (such as Deoxys-D). I know, it's a bad thing to do, but I find it very effective to just show I battle one way and others battle another way. Bring some flare to the battle, ey? Now, yes, Skarmory is pretty common, so I chose this thing as an exception to my rule. Skarmory was added as a physical wall. This skarmory has been proven very helpful to the team, most of the time bringing it victory.

Celebi is a special wall. Celebi is also a special attacker. This little guy packs a good punch in the opponent's face, just like a little kid punching a bully at school in the face. Celebi is a vital assessment to this team.

Sadly no animated sprite was found for Thundurus-Therian. :evan:
Thundurus is the most vital person of the team. He sweeps whole teams along with the help of Skarmory. Skarmory helps this guy with Whirlwind and Thundurus comes in to kill the unsuspecting victim.

Infernape was proven invaluable later and was, therefore, released. Politoed was then added. This is to confuse people for who's gonna be my lead. They usually fall for it and choose a grass type like ferothorn. Because of that, my Azelf has Fire Blast. However, before I choose my lead, I always look at the opponent's pokemon. Very rarely will I choose Politoed as my lead, but when it is, watch out, this becomes one fierce rain team.

Cya Celebi! Goodbye!

I found Jirachi a tough fellow to beat. I found Heatran also a better special defense man. Base 106 defenses, immunity to Toxic, and a wide support movepool make it a powerful and highly effective wall. Heatran can take down a Jirachi very easily. Jirachi use to be the killer of this team, killing all of the team.

Cya Haxorus! Goodbye!

An excellent suggestion by a person was to change Haxorus to Garchomp due to speed. I love this. Here's why:

Azelf @ Focus Sash
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Naive Nature
- Fire Blast
- Explosion
- Stealth Rock
- Taunt
Some people underestimate the power of Azelf. Here's the daily routine when Azelf wakes up (wakes up refers to when it's let out):

  1. Use Taunt to block them from making hazards.
  2. Use Stealth Rock to set up my own threat.
  3. If I haven't died yet or if I ain't at low HP, use Fire Blast. Ice teams are an exception to this. However, if I am at low HP, I use Explosion.
Fire Blast: Used to hurt the opponent some damage.
Explosion: Used if I have low HP and the opponent is not a Ghost type.
Stealth Rock: Used to set a hazard on the other team. Skarmory helps this as Skarmory has access to Whirlwind, giving the opponent torture.
Taunt: Used to stop the opponent from setting up hazards. First move played after released.

445.png
Garchomp @ Choice Band
Trait: Rough Skin
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature
- Outrage
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Dragon Claw
It does not do to leave a live dragon out of your calculations, if you live near him.
Outrage: Used only if the opponent either has:

  1. A strong physical defense team and Haxorus is one of few left.
  2. Less than 3 pokemon.
Earthquake: Used for those pesky little smart alec ice types.
Stone Edge: Used for its high critical hit rate.
Dragon Claw: Used if the opponent has a mixture of special walls and defensive walls and if the opponent has more than 3 pokemon. As you can see, I don't take chances with confusion.

politoedg.png

Politoed @ Leftovers
Trait: Drizzle
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SAtk
Bold Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Psychic
- Ice Beam
- Protect
You don't drown by falling in the water; you drown by staying there.
Hydro Pump: Hydro Pump is the STAB of this set. Hydro Pump kills alot of things.
Psychic: For damage to ghost type Gengar.
Ice Beam: Ice Beam is to hurt dragon types when Garchomp is down.
Protect: Used to help prediction.

227.png

Skarmory @ Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 232 Def / 252 HP / 24 Spd
Impish Nature
- Roost
- Spikes
- Whirlwind
- Brave Bird
He who would learn to fly one day must first learn to stand and walk and run and climb and dance; one cannot fly into flying. Skarmory is indeed one of the majistic birds in the sky, flying high.
Roost: Used to heal and used when people use certain moves.
Spikes: Another added danger when I use Whirlwind.
Whirlwind: Used to blow the opponent away. The hazards Azelf and Skarmory combined deal a 31% damage.
Brave Bird: Some offense for this majestic bird to criple it's opponent.

385.png

Jirachi @ Leftovers
Trait: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 224 SDef / 32 Spd
Gentle Nature
- Thunder
- Iron Head
- Wish
- Protect
The sharing of joy, whether physical, emotional, psychic, or intellectual, forms a bridge between the sharers which can be the basis for understanding much of what is not shared between them, and lessens the threat of their difference.
Thunder: With the help of Politoed, Thunder does a devistating 120 base power damage. Pretty helpful with flying types, eh?
Iron Head: With Serene Grace, Jirachi becomes the most annoying Pokemon, making the opponent flinch at a very high rate.
Wish: Sometimes used when switching and sometimes used for extra helth. Protect supports this.

  1. Use Wish.
  2. Use Protect. Healed!
Protect: Used to help prediction

thundurus-therian.jpg

Thundurus-Therian (M) @ Expert Belt
Trait: Volt Absorb
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
- Thunder
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Grass Knot
- Volt Switch
Thunder is good, thunder is impressive; but it is lightning that does the work. Thundurus-Therian, in my opinion, super effects alot of things. With that, Expert Belt helps a ton.
Thunder: With the help of Politoed, Thunder does a devistating 120 base power damage. That's enough to hurt half hp of a wall!
Hidden Power [Ice]: HP[Ice] Is for other Thundurus. Other Thundurus are big problems, well, until HP[Ice].
Grass Knot: Used for heavy rock types such as Tyranitar.
Volt Switch: Used if I wanna switch to a different pokemon whereas I can still do a possible critical damage. Happened before to a Rottom-W.

I am a beginner in competitive battling. I need constructive criticism. If you do give me constructive criticism, it's very greatly appreciated.

"In order to excel, you must be completely dedicated to your chosen sport. You must also be prepared to work hard and be willing to accept constructive criticism. Without one-hundred percent dedication, you won't be able to do this."
-Willie Mays

Help me excel! Criticize!

Just a couple things.

1. I like Azelf. Suicide lead with Fire Blast kills most entry hazard setters, exploding out to net surprise kills.

2. Haxorus should be traded for Garchomp. A bit less attack, but better Speed (only beat by the Lati twins at base speed), and Earthquake becomes STAB.

3. Change Volt Switch on Thunderus to Agility or Nasty Plot. With Agility, he is pretty much faster than anything your opponent can use, and he can spam Thunder over and over again. The only thing he needs to watch out for is priority attacks like Ice Shard.

Good luck!

Hey there, interesting team, seems to work nicely. There's a couple of things I noticed that could make your team even better.

First, I agree 100% with BlankZero with Thundurus using Agility over Volt Switch. This team is a little on the slower side and any team with Tornadus-T or anything faster can outspeed. Agility Thundurus-T is one of the most threatening sweepers in the game and helps it clean so much better. Thund-T forces a ton of switches so I'm sure that you'll have no problem finding time to set it up. Garchomp over Haxorus is a good suggestion as well, since you do have a pretty big Jirachi weakness, and there's few pokemon that are more threatening to it than Garchomp.

Moveset Changes and Heatran

Azelf is pretty cool, but I'm not a fan of Explosion in this gen. Its a lot weaker and I always get the feeling that I'd be better off with something else. I'd suggest using Thunder over it in order to help beat bulky Water types, or Psychic/Psyshock for stab. This gives Azelf a 100% reliable attack to use in the Rain.

Heatran is a great pokemon, but unfortunately doesn't do well on Rain teams, especially when his only attack is resisted. I would replace Heatran with either Jirachi or Ferrothorn. Jirachi beats Gengar and Thundurus with a Special Defense set. Ferrothorn gives you another Water resist, which is very important because Scarf Keldeo is a real pain for your team to face. Both resist Dragon attacks and can provide Paralysis support. You should test out both and see which works better. Here are the sets I would use:

Jirachi @ Leftovers
Trait: Serene Grace
EVs: 224 SDef / 252 HP / 32 Spd
Gentle Nature
- Thunder
- Iron Head
- Wish
- Protect

Its a pretty simple annoyer set, and it will provide you one of the only counters to Tornadus-T and Thundurus-T. On top of that, it provides Paralysis and Wish support. The only problem is Scarf Keldeo, who can still 2hko with Hydro Pump in the Rain, so Jirachi can't switch in.

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Trait: Iron Barbs
EVs: 88 Def / 252 HP / 168 SDef
Relaxed Nature
- Leech Seed
- Thunder Wave
- Protect
- Power Whip

Ferrothorn gives you a great Water resist and provides Paralysis support. Leech Seed benefits the whole team as well. Scarf Keldeo barely 2hkos with Secret Sword so Ferro can't switch into it either. Tornadus-T and Thundurus-T also have a much easier time against Ferro than Jirachi.

Countering Keldeo

Since neither of these can really counter Keldeo, I would suggest giving Politoed a more defensive spread. Politoed has really balanced stats meaning Keldeo can't break through on either side.

Politoed @ Leftovers
Trait: Water Absorb
EVs: 4 SAtk / 252 HP / 252 Def
Bold Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Psychic
- Ice Beam
- Protect

This set still keeps the offensive bite that your Politoed had with the spread of a defensive set. Psychic is a good choice not only for Keldeo, but for stuff like Toxicroak and Tentacruel as well. Here are some calcs to prove that this Politoed can now take on Keldeo:

252 SpA Keldeo Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Politoed in rain: 147-173 (38.28 - 45.05%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252 SpA Keldeo Secret Sword vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Politoed: 120-142 (31.25 - 36.97%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

Well, I hope I helped you out, best of luck with your team!

Hey,
I really like your team, especially Azelf, however there's still something to be fixed. The first thing that impressed me is that your two resistaces to Fighting, Azelf and Thundurus-T, are both extremely frail, and the first one can't do anything to Terrakion anyway. Your defensive core is also "weak" in a sense to Fighting, since Skarmory is 2HKO'd by CB Terrakion, and Heatran is...well, destroyed anyway. Another flaw that one could detect into your team is a general slowness: Terrakion is currently able to outspeed everything except Azelf, that can't touch it, and is free to Sub, SD, both, or whatever it likes to reduce your team to a pulp. Agility Thundurus-T, which I strongly support anyway (maybe with some changes: LO instead of EBelt and Focus Blast instead of Grass Knot, to go past Ferrothorn, Heatran, and similar things), won't help much since it needs a free turn to set up, and doesn't have readily avainable revenge killing potential. Lastly, using Heatran in a Rain team seems controversial to me, since Fire attacks would be heavily weakened anyway, and Heatran can't handle anything if an opposing Rain team shows up (Tornadus-T can easily go past it thanks to Fighting coverage, or just U-Turn to Dugtrio).

So, with these considerations in mind, I propose the following changes:
1- Remove SpD Heatran for SpD Jirachi. The goal of this choice is quite clear: to give you something that is able to defeat Tornadus-T. Jirachi's neutrality to Superpower is perfect for this goal, and the added Fire weakness is not really crippling: you have two solid resistances (Toed and your Dragon) and only two x2 weaknesses, mitigated by Rain. In return, Jirachi can grant Wishes, paralyze things (quite important when you rely on such a generally slow team), and even provide U-Turn capabilities, if you need it to.

385.png

Jirachi @ Leftovers | Serene Grace
Careful | 252 HP / 224 SpD / 32 Spe
- Body Slam
- Iron Head
- Wish
- Protect / U-Turn

2- Scarf your Politoed. ScarfToed outspeeds everything unboosted or unscarfed, and this gives you a way to take down dangerous threats like Terrakion, Garchomp, and the likes. Being able to induce its own weather is a big boon for a scarfer, since its STAB Hydro Pump is boosted to a very considerable level of power. You may be concerned about Toed's durability without Lefties or defensive investment, however remember that you now have a Wish passer, so the concern is a bit lessened. Also, Choce Scarf Hypnosis is quite fun and trollish, since it can remove unsuspecting things from the battle. The EV spread to do so is 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe Timid.

3- This is the most controversial change. I think Haxorus is not really contributing as it could to the team, and I'd remove it for another Dragon. Since I'm unable to decide between two alternatives to suggest, I'll just list both, with their pros and cons. The first one is CB Dragonite: it retains useful resistances to Water, Fighting (hi Terrakion, hi Keldeo, although Ice / Rock coverage hurts), covers the same role of Haxorus wile breaking down walls, but provides ExtremeSpeed, that is INCREDIBLY important for your team to not be complete Venusaur fodder if you lose the weather war (and to a lesser extent against Volcarona). The bad things about Nite is that it introduces another SR weakness, and it can't really handle Keldeo in common circumstances (well, if Keldeo is in ES KO range, everything is easier, but still, if Multiscale is not on, switching in will be painful if it predicts correctly). The second one is LO tank Latias: thanks to LO and Psyshock, it can attack from both sides (thus being threatening for special walls, and paving the way for Thundurus to sweep), it can handle Keldeo much better, and almost everything in Sun teams, too. The big problem here is that Timid +2 LO Sludge Bomb from Venusaur KOs 45% of the times after SR, with no LO damage taken into account. If Latias happens to be at less than full HP and you lose the weather war, it could very well be game over for you. I think that both these alternatives work better than your current one; it's up to you to decide which one suits better your team's needs.

149.png

Dragonite @ Choice Band | Multiscale
Adamant | 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
- Outrage
- ExtremeSpeed
- Superpower
- Waterfall

380.png

Latias @ Life Orb | Levitate
Timid | 72 HP / 184 SpA / 252 Spe
- Draco Meteor
- Surf
- Psyshock / HP Fire
- Roost

On a less important matter, I'd suggest a slight change in Azelf's set: going fully Physical with U-Turn | Explosion | Taunt | SR lets your Explosion do something actually, and allow you to retain momentum (and to not bang your head onto the desk when Fire Blast fails to do anything in Rain). Most Steels that can't be hurted much with this set will be crippled enough by Taunt + U-Turn anyway, so that's not really a concern.

Hpe I helped. Good luck.

Using Psychic on a Defensive Politoed is redundant. It 3HKOs Keldeo. Your Politoed would be dead by then. I would use Toxic over Psychic and Scald over Hydro Pump. Leave Thundurus-T to deal with Keldeo.

Set:

Politoed (M) @Leftovers
Trait: Drizzle
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Toxic
- Ice Beam
- Protect

Good luck!
