[OVERVIEW]

Azelf is a versatile Pokemon that can take advantage of its incredibly high Speed tier and wide movepool to provide a powerful offensive presence and fast support. Nasty Plot and a variety of coverage moves such as Fire Blast, Energy Ball, and Dazzling Gleam allow Azelf to hit nearly the entire tier for super effective damage. It learning Knock Off and U-turn also makes it a great offensive pivot that can threaten tier staples like Aegislash and Assault Vest Tangrowth. Despite Azelf's elite Speed, common Choice Scarf users like Krookodile and Zarude easily revenge kill it. Azelf does not have much bulk and lacks recovery, leaving it worn down quickly and making it difficult to set up with Nasty Plot. It also needs pivot support to get in safely, as it typically cannot directly switch into any attack. Starmie gives Azelf competition as a fast Psychic-type with strong coverage moves, solid secondary typing, a better offensive ability in Analytic, and better utility moves like Recover. However, Azelf can be more threatening than Starmie after Nasty Plot. As a pivot, Thundurus-T can fill a similar role, but Azelf's high Speed allows it to better threaten Pokemon like Keldeo and Nihilego.

[SET COMMENTS]

After a Nasty Plot, very few Pokemon other than Chansey and Umbreon can withstand a hit from Azelf. Psyshock is the preferred STAB option to OHKO Nihilego and Tentacruel without a boost, and it also hits Chansey considerably harder than Psychic. Fire Blast OHKOes defensive Celesteela and Assault Vest Tangrowth at +2. It also covers many key threats such as Jirachi and Buzzwole. Energy Ball is the preferred last move to hit Krookodile, Rhyperior, and Milotic for super effective damage. It also hits Unaware users like Quagsire and Pyukumuku, giving Azelf a good matchup against certain stall teams. Dazzling Gleam is an option to 2HKO Salamence and hit Galarian Moltres super effectively while also maintaining coverage for Krookodile. It also prevents Umbreon from completely walling Azelf. Since Azelf will typically be hitting its foes for super effective damage, Expert Belt is enough to OHKO nearly everything. Life Orb can be used to increase Azelf's damage output more consistently on targets that it cannot hit super effectively, like Hatterene and Moltres, but the chip damage adds up quickly and leaves Azelf more vulnerable to revenge killers with priority like Lycanroc-D. Colbur Berry allows Azelf to withstand one Dark-type hit from common Choice Scarf users like Krookodile and Zarude and KO them back. This is more situational and less reliable, and Azelf needs the extra power from Expert Belt or Life Orb to OHKO certain foes like Celesteela and Assault Vest Tangrowth at +2.

Nasty Plot Azelf is best used on hyper offense builds that can offer it support, although it can also fit on certain balance teams as a late-game wincon. An entry hazard setter like Nihilego or Krookodile helps weaken foes like Chansey and Primarina into KO range of +2 Azelf. A Sticky Web setter like Ribombee or Shuckle significantly boosts Azelf's ability to clean through teams, as Sticky Web invalidates common Choice Scarf users like Krookodile and Zarude as revenge killers. It also ensures Azelf does not lose any Speed ties with Zygarde-10%, or Raikou and Starmie if they lack Heavy-Duty Boots. A pivot like Zarude can get Azelf in safely against Pokemon like Amoonguss. A wallbreaker like Azumarill or Mamoswine can help punch holes in the enemy team, significantly weakening them for Azelf to sweep later. Other sweepers like Gyarados and Nasty Plot Thundurus-T can be used on hyper offense teams to cover a wider range of threats, including Galarian Moltres and Incineroar, which Azelf cannot easily beat.

move 2: Knock Off
move 3: U-turn
move 4: Flamethrower
item: Heavy-Duty Boots
ability: Levitate
nature: Timid
evs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

U-turn lets Azelf to pivot away from switch-ins and escape counters like Umbreon and Galarian Moltres. Knock Off offers important utility to cripple defensive switch-ins like Chansey and Hatterene. Psychic is the preferred STAB option to OHKO Kommo-o and Buzzwole. Psyshock is an option over Psychic to guarantee the OHKO on Nihilego and deal additional damage to specially defensive foes like Chansey and Primarina. Flamethrower allows Azelf to threaten Jirachi and Aegislash. While Timid is the preferred nature, a Naive nature can be used to deal more chip damage with U-turn and Knock Off at the expense of some survivability.

Offensive pivot Azelf best fits on balance teams and offense teams that appreciate a fast pivot and revenge killer. Strong wallbreakers like Azumarill and Mamoswine appreciate Azelf's pivoting and deal with Umbreon. An entry hazard setter like Nidoqueen, Rhyperior, or Krookodile syncs well with the switches that Azelf's momentum forces, providing additional damage for it and its teammates to break through defensive cores like Tangrowth + Chansey. An offensive pivot like Zarude forms a strong pivoting core with Azelf. Zarude can bring Azelf in on Amoonguss and Tangrowth, while it can bring Zarude in on foes like Seismitoad and Rhyperior. Primarina is a great partner for Azelf, as it threatens Pokemon like Krookodile and Galarian Moltres. Keldeo can also be a great partner, as it threatens checks like Incineroar. In return, Azelf helps remove their common Grass-type counters like Amoonguss and Tangrowth after they are sufficiently chipped. Many Choice Scarf users like Krookodile and Zarude can outspeed and threaten Azelf, so a defensive teammate like Amoonguss or Tangrowth can be used to take hits from these foes.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Adrenaline Orb can be used on the Nasty Plot set to beat Azelf's most common check in Choice Scarf Krookodile, as Intimidate will boost Azelf's Speed and allow it to KO Krookodile with a boosted coverage move. This tactic also helps against Salamence, but it is rather useless against teams that do not have one of these two Pokemon. Azelf can be used as a suicide lead due to its great Speed tier and access to Stealth Rock and Taunt. While this allows Azelf to always get Stealth Rock up with a Focus Sash, a Pokemon like Krookodile, which possesses better defensive utility and a stronger Knock Off, can typically do this job better. A dual screens set can additionally set Stealth Rock and maintain momentum with Explosion, but it has difficulties setting both Stealth Rock and dual screens. Azelf can also be a Choice Band user with its great Speed tier and wide physical movepool, boasting options like Knock Off, U-turn, Zen Headbutt, Ice Punch, Explosion, and Trick. However, it is usually unable to OHKO its foes and outclassed by Pokemon like Crawdaunt, which provides priority and a stronger Knock Off.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Choice Scarf Users**: Common Choice Scarf users like Krookodile, Zarude, Jirachi, and Mienshao outspeed and threaten Azelf with super effective STAB or coverage moves.

**Priority Attackers**: Azelf does not have great defenses and will be 2HKOed by most priority attacks, including Accelerock from Lycanroc-D and Aqua Jet from Azumarill. Additionally, more powerful priority attacks like a boosted Quick Attack from Diggersby will KO Azelf after minimal chip damage.

**Dark-types**: Galarian Moltres can OHKO Azelf, and Azelf cannot do much back it unless it is running Dazzling Gleam and Colbur Berry. Umbreon walls Azelf almost completely without Dazzling Gleam. Finally, Incineroar poses the most significant problem to Azelf, as it can threaten to KO Azelf with Knock Off or pivot with U-turn or Parting Shot, while Azelf cannot threaten it at all.

- Azelf is a solid versatile Pokemon that can take advantage of its incredible Speed tier and offensive capabilities to utilize fast support sets or act as a powerful offensive presence.
- Access to a variety of coverage moves such as Fire Blast, Energy Ball, and Dazzling Gleam allow Azelf to hit nearly the entire tier for Super Effective or Neutral damage with a single moveset.
- Nasty Plot allows Azelf to act as a powerful sweeper, while access to Stealth Rock, U-Turn, and Knock Off allow it to act as a fast and powerful support option. (combine the nasty plot with the above point and bring up how with a boost it tears through metagame staples like Assault Vest tangrowth, chansey, and primarina)
- While Azelf is in an elite Speed tier in UU, it is easily revenge KOed by common scarfers like Krookodile and Zarude as well as priority users like Scizor and Lycanroc-D.
- Azelf does not have much bulk and lacks recovery, causing it to wear down quickly if it takes any hits. add how its frailty means it cannot set up at times and thus limits its offensive capabilities. also bring up how it cannot switch in at all
- Mew gives Azelf significant competition for a setup sweeper psychic type, most of its jobs, as it is generally a better hazard setting lead with Spikes, and is a bulkier Nasty Plot sweeper with similar coverage. Azelf, however, is faster and more powerful than Mew, and can be used on teams where its high Speed and damage output is more appealing than Mew.
- Krookodile also is used as a Stealth Rock lead on Hyper Offense builds, giving Azelf competition as a suicide lead. Krookodile also offers intimidiate support and is more offensively threatening as a lead than Azelf. Azelf, however, is much faster, allowing to set up Stealth Rock more easily and also letting it Taunt fast Defoggers like Salamence which Krookodile fails to outspeed. (had to nuke all the rocks mentions due to it being OO now)

Paragraph 1
- One Nasty Plot allows Azelf to OHKO most of the tier with STAB or coverage moves, as there are very few Pokemon other than Chansey and Mew that can withstand a +2 hit.
- Psyshock is the preferred STAB option, as it is a OHKO on Nihilego and Tentacruel without a boost, and also hits Chansey considerably harder than Psychic.
- Fire Blast at +2 is a guaranteed OHKO on defensive Celesteela and Assault Vest Tangrowth with Expert Belt or Life Orb. It also covers many key threats such as Scizor and Buzzwole.
- Energy Ball is the preferred last move, as it allows Azelf to hit Krookodile, Rhyperior, and Primarina for Super Effective Damage. It also hits Unaware Pokemon like Quagsire and Pyukumuku, giving Azelf a good matchup against certain stall teams.
- Dazzling Gleam is also an option to hit Salamence and Galarian Moltres, while also maintaining coverage for Krookodile. The last coverage option depends on Azelf's teammates and what potential threats Azelf is asked to handle, (fluff) but Energy Ball will typically be more useful as it offers better coverage generally for most threats in the tier.
- Since Azelf will typically be hitting its foes for Super Effective damage, an Expert Belt gives it the most utility, allowing Azelf to OHKO nearly everything that activates the Expert Belt. (add some examples of KOs achieved)
- Life Orb can also be used to further increase Azelf's damage output more consistently on neutral targets Azelf cannot hit super effectively like Moltres and Hatterene, but the chip damage adds up quickly and leaves Azelf more vulnerable to being revenge KOed by priority attackers like Scizor and Aegislash
- A Colbur Berry can also be used to allow Azelf to withstand one hit from common Choice Scarf users like Knock Off Krookodile and Darkest Lariat Zarude, letting Azelf KO them back with coverage moves. This is more situational though and less reliable, and Azelf needs the extra power from Expert Belt or Life Orb to assuredly OHKO certain foes like Celesteela at +2.

Paragraph 2
- This set is best used on hyper offensive builds that can offer Azelf support, though it can also fit on certain balance teams that could use Azelf as an endgame wincon.
- A hazard setter like Nihilego or Diggersby Krookodile (while diggersby does set spikes I don't exactly slap diggers on a team as my hazard setter lol, krook here is a much better mention) helps weaken Azelf's foes (like? Bring up some examples of targets it can KO easier with chip damage) to allow it to more easily OHKO them after a boost. Nihilego also helps defensively check common flyers like Moltres and Noivern, both of which give Azelf problems due to Moltres's typing and bulk and Noivern's Speed.
- A Sticky Web setter like Shuckle or Araquanid significantly boosts Azelf's ability to clean through teams, as the Sticky Web invalidates common Choice scarf users like Krookodile and Zarude to allows Azelf to OHKO them with coverage moves and attack first. It also ensures Azelf does not lose any Speed ties with Raikou or Starmie. (clarify non boots raikou since its common)
- A screen setter like Grimmsnarl or Alolan Ninetales can help Azelf more easily use Nasty Plot thanks to the reduced damage. While this can be used effectively on certain teams, a Spikes stack or Sticky Web based Hyper Offense build will typically offer Azelf better opportunities to sweep. (make sure to make it sound less good since veil isnt that great, in all honesty cut it if you feel it should be)
- Azelf takes heavy damage from common priority users like Scizor and Aegislash, and as such appreciates a teammate like Buzzwole or Moltres that can tank these hits or inflict Burns, and also threaten these back offensively. Aegislash as a teammate also helps against priority attacks from both Scizor and Lycanroc. (make sure to clarify what type of teams they work together on. for example, buzzwole works well on webs with azelf due to hit being able to deal with stuff like scarf krook if webs arent up. Its up to you what teamstyle you want to clairfy that buzz works well on with azelf)
- A pivot like Scizor helps get Azelf in safely against good matchups like Celesteela or Amoonguss, both of which Azelf threatens with coverage or STAB moves. add how scizor helps muscle through special walls like Umbreon and AV reuni
- A wallbreaker like Mamoswine can help punch holes in the enemy team, significantly weakening them for Azelf to sweep later. This is especially helpful against defensive Pokemon like Chansey which can get its Eviolite knocked off, as Azelf struggles to beat it without support. Another wallbreaker with Knock Off like Azumarill can also fit a similar role.
- Other sweepers like Thundurus-T and Gyarados can also be used on Hyper Offense teams with Azelf to cover a wider range of threats that Azelf cannot easily beat, such as Galarian Moltres and Incineroar.

this is moved to OO now

Paragraph 1
- Stealth Rock provides the main support for this set, and Azelf's Speed tier allows it to get it set against nearly every foe except for Taunt Grimmsnarl.
- Taunt prevents foes like Rotom-W and Salamence from using Defog to clear hazards, as well as prevent other leads like Mew from setting up their own hazards. Taunt also prevents dangerous sweepers like Galarian Moltres from setting up.
- Explosion provides immediate momentum after setting Stealth Rock, while also dealing considerable damage to most foes thanks to Azelf's high Attack stat.
- Knock Off provides extra utility by removing items from key defensive foes like Chansey and Rotom-H or offensive threats like Meteor Beam Nihilego before it can set up.
- Flamethrower can also be used to OHKO Scizor and also threaten foes like Amoonguss and Buzzwole. Knock Off will typically have more uses though, as Flamethrower is not very helpful if these Pokemon are not brought in during the first few turns of battle.
- U-turn can also be used as a way to escape a bad lead situation or pivot out after Azelf sets Stealth Rock, allowing it a chance to return to later to set them again should they be removed. Since this set is mostly used on Hyper Offense builds, Azelf is typically better off setting hazards and fainting through Explosion or an enemy attack, as this would actually provide more momentum than a fast pivot out.
- A Focus Sash is necessary to prevent a OHKO from common leads like Knock Off Krookodile, which Azelf will typically stay in on anyways to set Stealth Rock.
- A Jolly nature with maximum Attack and Speed investment is used here since Azelf does not require any bulk with this set, as it is meant to use Explosion and only take two hits with its Focus Sash.

Paragraph 2
- This set is primarily used on Hyper Offense builds that appreciate Azelf's ability to set up Stealth Rock and maintain momentum through Explosion.
- Azelf is almost always used as the lead so that it can set up hazards and then proceed to hinder the enemy team with its other support moves until it uses Explosion to keep momentum.
- A screens based Hyper Offense is especially effective with Azelf's support, and as such Grimmsnarl or Alolan Ninetales are great partners as the basis of the type of team.
- A Spikes setter like Diggersby or Scolipede can form a decent hazard stacking core with Azelf, while also providing formidable immediate offense for the team.
- Azumarill is a great option as an anti-lead against an obvious Krookodile lead or Grimmsnarl, two pokemon which give Azelf significant difficulties if sent out first. Additionally, Azumarill can be used as a set up sweeper with Belly Drum on most standard Hyper Offense builds.
- Chandelure can also be a problematic Pokemon for Azelf if it is not carrying Knock Off, as using Explosion against Chandelure is very wasteful. Kommo-o is a good teammate that can check Chandelure with Bulletproof, and with Clangorous Soul it also offers great sweeping potential and the ability to tank priority attacks from Lycanroc-D.

- Other good offensive teammates include Scizor, Gyarados, and Galarian Moltres, as they can all fit this team build due to their incredible sweeping potential.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
-bring up Suicide lead here and pros and cons to it
- An Adrenaline Orb can be used on the Nasty Plot set to allow Azelf to counter its most common check in Choice Scarf Krookodile, as Intimidate will boost Azelf's Speed and allow it to KO Krookodile with a boosted coverage move. This also works with other Intimidate users like Salamence, but the tactic is rather useless against teams that do not have one of these two Pokemon.
- Azelf's high Attack and Speed allow it to be used as a pivot support Pokemon with U-Turn and Heavy Duty Boots, giving it a role as a more conventional lead on balance teams with some combination of Knock Off, Taunt, Stealth Rock, Psychic, and Flamethrower. A Pokemon like Thundurus can typically handle a similar role more effectively, but Azelf's access to Stealth Rock and Flamethrower give it a specific niche that can fit on certain builds.
- Access to Reflect and Light Screen allows Azelf to act as a dual screen setter that can also set up Stealth Rock and maintain momentum with Explosion, making it an attractive role-compressed Hyper Offense lead. Grimmsnarl and Alolan Ninetales are better dual screen setters, but Azelf's ability to set hazards and use Explosion allows the other five teammates to focus on Pokemon with maximum sweeping potential. Azelf will often have a hard time setting Stealth Rock and both screens though, so it will sometimes have to end up choosing which screen is more useful to set for the specific occasion and passing momentum with just that one screen. (screens suck now, so not worth it)
- Azelf has a great physical movepool to go along with its elite Speed tier, allowing it to utilize a Choice Band set with Knock Off and U-Turn, as well as a combination of Zen Headbutt, Ice Punch, Explosion, and Trick. While the damage output can be very disruptive for the enemy team, it will typically fail to OHKO its foes, and another Choice Band user like Scizor can offer more powerful U-Turns while also giving a priority attacking option with Bullet Punch.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Choice Scarf Users**: Common Choice Scarf users like Krookodile, Zarude, Jirachi, and Mienshao all give Azelf significant problems, as they will outspeed all versions of it and either use Knock Off to OHKO it if it does not have an unbroken Focus Sash, or U-Turn to severely chip it and switch out to a defensive check to Azelf. A Colbur Berry Azelf with the Nasty Plot set can KO the Knock Off users with STAB or coverage moves after absorbing a Knock Off, while Sticky Web support invalidates all of these Choice Scarf users and allows Azelf to easily handle them. (this last part needs fixing. For sticky web now we're getting into team options which is not what should be happening here, webs can be put in team options but not checks and counters. For colbur berry 3/4 of these just click u-turn on it so I would just reword to something along the lines of.. "However, Krookodile must be wary of Azelf holding a Colbur berry as it can live a Knock off and KO with Energy Ball)

**Priority Attackers**: Azelf does not have great defenses, and as such will be 2HKOed by most priority attacks, including Accelerock by Lycanroc-D and Aqua Jet by Azumarill. Additionally, more powerful priority attacks like a Bullet Punch from Choice Band Scizor or Shadow Sneak from Aegislash will KO Azelf after minimal chip.

**Dark-types**: Most Dark-type Pokemon like Grimmsnarl, Umbreon, Galarian Moltres, and Incineroar will give Azelf a hard time in fulfilling its role, as Grimmsnarl can use Taunt to prevent Azelf from setting up Stealth Rock or using Nasty Plot. Galarian Moltres can also threaten to OHKO Azelf, and Azelf cannot do much back it unless it is running Dazzling Gleam and a Colbur Berry. Finally, Incineroar poses the most significant problem to Azelf, as Azelf will almost never have any coverage to deal with it and it can threaten to KO Azelf with Knock Off. (grimmsnarl is near unviable so I decided to cut it and replace with umbreon. say how umbreon walls azelf for the descrption)

- Azelf's ability to use Knock Off and U-turn also make it a great option for an offensive pivot that can threaten or hassle most of the tier.
- While Azelf is in an elite Speed tier in UU, it is easily revenge KOed killed by common scarfers Choice Scarf users like Krookodile and Zarude.
- Azelf does not have much bulk and lacks recovery, causing it to wear down quickly if it takes any hits. Since it takes significant damage from priority attacks, it needs to keep its HP high to avoid being KOed by these hits.
- Given its frailty, Azelf sometimes struggles to successfully set up a Nasty Plot. It also needs pivot support to get it in safely, as it typically cannot switch in on its own into any attack.
- Mew gives Azelf significant competition as it is a bulkier Nasty Plot sweeper with similar coverage. Azelf, however, is faster and more powerful than Mew, and can be used on teams where its high Speed and damage output is more appealing than Mew.
- Thundurus can be used as a pivot with a similar role as Azelf. While Azelf is slightly faster and hits harder, Thundurus's STAB Electric coverage can be more useful to take down foes like Primarina and Celesteela, and its more useful defensive typing allow it to typically last longer throughout the course of a battle. mention thundy's weakness to accelerock though

- Since Azelf will typically be hitting its foes for Super Effective damage, an Expert Belt gives it the most utility, allowing Azelf to OHKO nearly everything that activates the Expert Belt such as the aforementioned Celesteela and Assault Vest Tangrowth after one Nasty Plot boost. just say expert belt lets azelf get the most out of its colorful coverage or something like that, no need to mention the ohkoes again

Paragraph 1
- U-turn is the primary focus of this set, allowing lets Azelf to pivot out of switch-ins and escape bad matchups from foes like Incineroar and Galarian Moltres.
- Knock Off offers important utility to cripple defensive switch-ins like Chansey and Hatterene. Azelf's high base Attack stat also allows it to do modest damage even with no Attack investment. Azelf can then U-turn out once their items have been knocked to allow another teammate to break past them more easily.
- Psychic is Azelf's only STAB, though Psyshock is an option to guarantee the OHKO on Nihilego and deal additional damage to specially defensive foes like Chansey and Primarina. Psychic, however, is the preferred option, as it is a guaranteed OHKO on Kommo-o and Buzzwole, and generally does more damage due to its higher Base Power to other foes. change the order in which you mention psyshock and psychic
- Flamethrower allows Azelf to threaten major threats in the tier such as Scizor and Aegislash, though Azelf needs to watch its health as both of these can KO Azelf with priority attacks if it is sufficiently chipped.

Paragraph 2
- This set best fits on Balance teams and Offense teams with strong wall breakers that appreciate a strong pivot that can threaten major tier staples while also hassling crippling foes generally with Knock Off. forgot the mention the key part: they like the pivot support
- Strong wall breakers like Conkeldurr and Mamoswine help keep maximum pressure on the opposing team, as they appreciate Azelf's ability to hassle cripple foes like Celesteela and Mew. Azelf also appreciates both of these to deal with Incineroar, which counters Azelf almost completely.
- A hazard setter like Nidoqueen, Rhyperior, or Diggersby helps create additional chip damage for Azelf and its teammates to break through defensive cores like Tangrowth and Chansey. i'd much rather see krook or mew or clanger in place of diggs
- An offensive pivot like Zarude, Raikou, or Scizor forms a strong voltturn pivoting core, allowing Azelf to bring in Raikou on foes like Celesteela and Galarian Moltres, bring in Zarude on foes like Seismitoad and Rhyperior, and bring in Scizor on foes like Chansey. All of these can also pivot out to Azelf on most of their defensive switch-ins like Amoonguss, Tangrowth, or Salamence, to restart the cycle or allow Azelf to hassle the foes with Knock Off or offensively pressure them with Psychic or Flamethrower. i'd switch the order and mentions a bit. mention how raikou and zarude pivot out of stuff like amoong and scizor pivots out of aegi and buzz for example. then say azelf threatens them with stab + coverage. mention azelf can pivot out of stuff like mew, resttalk primarina, and galarian molt and what mons appreciate that.
- Primarina is a great partner for Azelf, as it threatens Pokemon like Incineroar, Grimmsnarl, and Galarian Moltres that Azelf would otherwise struggle with. Keldeo can also be a great partner, as it can also threaten most checks to Azelf like Incineroar while also outspeeding and offensively pressuring a large portion of the metagame. this is fluff add a mention of what azelf does for them too.
- Many Choice Scarf users like Krookodile, Jirachi, Mienshao and Zarude can outspeed and threaten Azelf. As such, Azelf can benefit from a defensive teammate like Amoonguss or Tangrowth that can take hits from all of the Pokemon and threaten them with Sleep inducing moves or removing their Choice Scarf with Knock Off. just condense this into what answers the choice scarf users you mentioned and what can they do in return to help azelf.

- Azelf can be used as a suicide lead due to its great Speed tier and access to Stealth Rock and Taunt. While this allows Azelf to always get Stealth Rock up with a Focus Sash, setting Stealth Rock has diminished value with the prevalence of Heavy Duty Boots, and a Pokemon like Krookodile with better defensive utility and a STAB boosted Knock Off can typically do this job better.
- Access to Reflect and Light Screen allows Azelf to act as a dual screen setter that can also set up Stealth Rock and maintain momentum with Explosion, but Azelf will often have a hard time setting Stealth Rock and both screens and will usually have to end up choosing which screen is more useful to set for the specific occasion and passing momentum with just that one screen.

===================

**Choice Scarf Users**: Common Choice Scarf users like Krookodile, Zarude, Jirachi, and Mienshao all give Azelf significant problems, as they will outspeed all versions of it and either use Knock Off to OHKO it if it does not have an unbroken Focus Sash, or U-Turn to severely chip it and switch out to a defensive check to Azelf, though most of these must be wary of a potential Colbur Berry as Azelf can then withstand a Dark-type attack and threaten with Super Effective STAB or coverage moves.

**Dark-types**: Most Dark-type Pokemon like Umbreon, Galarian Moltres, and Incineroar will give Azelf a hard time in fulfilling its role. Galarian Moltres can also threaten to OHKO Azelf, and Azelf cannot do much back it unless it is running Dazzling Gleam and a Colbur Berry. Umbreon also walls Azelf almost completely without Dazzling Gleam. Finally, Incineroar poses the most significant problem to Azelf, as Azelf will almost never have any coverage to deal with it and it can threaten to KO Azelf with Knock Off or pivot out with U-turn or Parting Shot.

[OVERVIEW]

Azelf is a versatile Pokemon that can take advantage of its incredibly high Speed tier and offensive capabilities to utilize fast support sets or act as a powerful offensive presence. Access to Nasty Plot and a variety of coverage moves such as Fire Blast, Energy Ball, and Dazzling Gleam allow Azelf to hit nearly the entire tier for Super Effective or Neutral damage and threaten tier staples like Aegislash and Assault Vest Tangrowth This is implied by its coverage hitting everything. Azelf's ability to use Knock Off and U-turn also make it a great option for an offensive pivot that can threaten or hassle most of the tier. This is where I would rather see the example of AV Tang brought up While Azelf is in an elite Speed tier in UU, it is easily revenge killed by common Choice Scarf users like Krookodile and Zarude. Azelf does not have much bulk and lacks recovery, causing it to wear down quickly if it takes any hits. Since it takes significant damage from priority attacks, it needs to keep its HP high to avoid being KOed by these hits. Given its frailty, Azelf sometimes struggles to successfully set up a Nasty Plot. It also needs pivot support to get it in safely, as it typically cannot switch in on its own into any attack. This is a very long way of saying its mediocre bulk means it can struggle to NP up and leaves it prone to being revenge killed by... You don't need 4 sentences to explain that Mew gives Azelf significant competition as it is a bulkier Nasty Plot sweeper with a much wider movepool similar coverage. Azelf, however, is faster and more powerful than Mew, and can be used on teams where its high Speed and damage output is more appealing than Mew. As a pivot, Thundurus can be used with a similar role. Azelf is slightly faster and hits harder, but Thundurus has more useful defensive typing which allows it to typically last longer throughout the course of a battle, A better defensive typing doesn't automatically mean you last longer in a match. It just means you have better defensive utility, such as resisting Scizor BP on offense. Also if you are going to talk about Azelf being faster then you may as well specify it's faster than Thundurus because that's the only relevant advantage to the Speed tier. though it must watch out for Accelerock from Lycanroc-D.

[SET COMMENTS]

One Nasty Plot allows Azelf to OHKO most of the tier with STAB or coverage moves, as there are very few Pokemon other than Chansey and Mew that can withstand a +2 hit. Psyshock is the preferred STAB option, as it is a OHKO on Nihilego and Tentacruel without a boost, and also hits Chansey considerably harder than Psychic. Fire Blast at +2 is a guaranteed OHKO on defensive Celesteela and Assault Vest Tangrowth with Expert Belt or Life Orb. It also covers many key threats such as Scizor and Buzzwole. Energy Ball is the preferred last move, as it allows Azelf to hit Krookodile, Rhyperior, and Milotic for Super Effective Damage. It also hits Unaware Pokemon like Quagsire and Pyukumuku, giving Azelf a good matchup against certain stall teams. Dazzling Gleam is also an option to guarantee a 2HKO on Salamence and hit Galarian Moltres super effectively, while also maintaining coverage for Krookodile. It also prevents Azelf from being completely walled by Umbreon, but Energy Ball will typically be more useful as it offers better coverage generally for most threats in the tier. Since Azelf will typically be hitting its foes for Super Effective damage, an Expert Belt gives it the most utility, allowing Azelf to OHKO nearly everything that activates the Expert Belt such as the aforementioned Celesteela and Assault Vest Tangrowth after one Nasty Plot boost. Life Orb can also be used to further increase Azelf's damage output more consistently on neutral targets that Azelf cannot hit Super Effectively like Hatterene and Mew, but the chip damage adds up quickly and leaves Azelf more vulnerable to being revenge KOed by priority attackers like Scizor. A Colbur Berry can also be used to allow Azelf to withstand one Dark-type hit from common Choice Scarf users like Krookodile and Zarude, letting Azelf KO them back. This is more situational though and less reliable, and Azelf needs the extra power from Expert Belt or Life Orb to assuredly OHKO certain foes like Celesteela at +2.

This set is best used on hyper offensive builds that can offer Azelf support, though it can also fit on certain balance teams that could use Azelf as an endgame wincon. A hazard setter like Nihilego or Krookodile helps weaken Azelf's foes like Chansey or Primarina to allow it to more easily KO them after a boost. A Sticky Web setter like Shuckle or Slurpuff significantly boosts Azelf's ability to clean through teams, as the Sticky Web invalidates common sChoice Scarf users like Krookodile and Zarude to allows Azelf to OHKO them with coverage moves and attack first. It also ensures Azelf does not lose any Speed ties with Zygarde-10% or Starmie if they are not equipped with Heavy Duty Boots. It's not like Zygarde ever runs boots so this should only be directed at Starmie A pivot like Scizor helps get Azelf in safely against good matchups like Celesteela or Amoonguss. I fail to see how getting a turn on Celesteela is really that ideal. Yeah you can chunk it, but it will also do the same back. Scizor also really doesn't want to run U-turn in this meta over Knock Off. If you want a pivot I'd rather see Thundurus and it's likely to knock AV Reuni, Chansey, etc. Scizor can also help against Umbreon and Assault Vest Reuniclus which would otherwise wall Azelf, though Umbreon should be wary of a potential Dazzling Gleam. A wallbreaker like Azumarill or Mamoswine can help punch holes in the enemy team, significantly weakening them for Azelf to sweep later. This is especially helpful against defensive Pokemon like Chansey which can get its Eviolite knocked off, as Azelf struggles to beat it without support. Seems pretty optimistic for Chansey to even pivot into/stay in against either of these two for this to happen. Other sweepers like Thundurus-T and Gyarados can also be used on Hyper Offense teams with Azelf to cover a wider range of threats that Azelf cannot easily beat, such as Galarian Moltres and Incineroar. Thundy-T is more wallbreaker than sweeper

[SET COMMENTS]

U-turn lets Azelf to pivot out of switch-ins and escape bad matchups from foes like Incineroar and Galarian Moltres. Knock Off offers important utility to cripple defensive switch-ins like Chansey and Hatterene. Psychic is the preferred STAB option, as it is a guaranteed OHKO on Kommo-o and Buzzwole. Psyshock is an option over Psychic to guarantee the OHKO on Nihilego and deal additional damage to specially defensive foes like Chansey and Primarina, but Psychic generally does more damage to other foes. Flamethrower allows Azelf to threaten Scizor and Aegislash, though Azelf needs to watch its health as both of these can KO Azelf with priority attacks if it is sufficiently chipped. A Naive nature allows Azelf to deal more chip damage with U-turn and be more threatening with Knock Off. Timid is also an option, but Azelf is generally unaffected by the drop in Special Defense from a Naive nature and will not be taking many hits anyhow. While this may be true is there really a need to increase the power of knock and u-turn

This set best fits on Balance teams and Offense teams with strong wall breakers that appreciate fast a strong pivot support and a great form of Speed control. that can threaten major tier staples while also crippling foes generally with Knock Off. Strong wall breakers like Conkeldurr and Mamoswine help keep maximum pressure on the opposing team, Just say they appreciate the free pivot instead as they appreciate Azelf's ability to cripple foes like Celesteela and Mew. Azelf also appreciates both of these to deal with Incineroar, which counters Azelf almost completely. Well once you Knock Incin it's getting worn down by hazards + u-turn A hazard setter like Nidoqueen, Rhyperior, or Krookodile helps create additional chip damage for Azelf and its teammates to break through defensive cores like Tangrowth and Chansey. An offensive pivot like Zarude, Raikou, or Scizor forms a strong pivoting core. All of these can pivot out of defensive switch-ins like Amoonguss or Tangrowth, with Scizor additionally pivoting out of Aegislash and Buzzwole, to bring in Azelf safely. Azelf wouldn't want a switch into Aegi though, it wants to hit it on the switch-in Azelf can then bring in Raikou on foes like Celesteela and Galarian Moltres, bring in Zarude on foes like Seismitoad and Rhyperior, and bring in Scizor on foes like Chansey. Primarina is a great partner for Azelf, as it threatens Pokemon like Incineroar, and Galarian Moltres that Azelf would otherwise struggle with. Keldeo can also be a great partner, as it can also threaten most checks to Azelf like Incineroar. Azelf can also aid both of these by checking their common Grass-type counters like Amoonguss and Tangrowth. This feels off because even Amoong threatens it pretty heavily, Tang is def not something you want to check. Also, try to be more diverse with the examples. You've mentioned Incin a lot, a mon that really isn't common. You have options like Hatterene, Krookodile, Celesteela etc. Many Choice Scarf users like Krookodile and Zarude can outspeed and threaten Azelf, so a defensive teammate like Amoonguss or Tangrowth can be used to take hits from these foes and threaten them with Sleep inducing moves or removing their Choice Scarf with Knock Off, making it easier for Azelf to finish them off later in the match.

Starmie gives Azelf competition as a fast Psychic-(AH)type with strong coverage moves, solid secondary typing, better offensive ability in Analytic, and access to better support moves like Recover. Still However, Azelf can be more threatening than Starmie offensively after one Nasty Plot boost. As a pivot, Thundurus can be used with a similar role. Azelf is faster and hits harder, but Thundurus has more useful defensive typing, and Thundurus is the only relevant Pokemon that Azelf outspeeds entirely, though it forces a Speed tie with others such as Starmie and Zygarde-10%. One Nasty Plot allows Azelf to OHKO most of the tier with its STAB or coverage moves, as there are very few Pokemon other than Chansey and Umbreon that can withstand a +2 hit. Psyshock is the preferred STAB option,(RC) as it is a to OHKO on Nihilego and Tentacruel without a boost, and it also hits Chansey considerably harder than Psychic. Fire Blast at +2 is a guaranteed +2 Fire Blast OHKOes on defensive Celesteela,(AC) and Assault Vest Tangrowth with Expert Belt or Life Orb. It also covers many key threats such as Jirachi and Buzzwole. Energy Ball is the preferred last move,(RC) as it allows Azelf to hit Krookodile, Rhyperior, and Milotic for super effective damage(lowercase). It also hits Unaware Pokemon users like Quagsire and Pyukumuku, giving Azelf a good matchup against certain stall teams. Dazzling Gleam is also an option to guarantee a 2HKO on Salamence and hit Galarian Moltres super effectively,(RC) while also maintaining coverage for Krookodile. It also prevents Azelf from being completely walled by Umbreon. Since Azelf will typically be hitting its foes for super effective(lowercase) damage, an Expert Belt gives it the most utility,(RC) allowing Azelf to OHKO nearly everything. Life Orb can also be used to further increase Azelf's damage output more consistently on neutral targets that Azelf cannot hit super effectively(lowercase),(AC) like Hatterene and Moltres, but the chip damage adds up quickly and leaves Azelf more vulnerable to being revenge KOed killed by priority attackers like Lycanroc-D. A Colbur Berry can also be used to allows Azelf to withstand one Dark-type hit from common Choice Scarf users like Krookodile and Zarude,(RC) letting Azelf and KO them back. This is more situational though and less reliable, and Azelf needs the extra power from Expert Belt or Life Orb to assuredly OHKO certain foes like Celesteela at +2.

This set Nasty Plot Azelf is best used on hyper offensive offense builds that can offer Azelf it support, although it can also fit on certain balance teams that could use Azelf as an end-(AH)game wincon. A entry hazard setter like Nihilego or Krookodile helps weaken Azelf's foes like Chansey or and Primarina to allow it to more easily KO them after a boost into KO range of +2 Azelf. A Sticky Web setter like Ribombee or Shuckle significantly boosts Azelf's ability to clean through teams, as the Sticky Web invalidates common Choice Scarf users like Krookodile and Zarude to allows Azelf to OHKO them with coverage moves and attack first and allows Azelf to outspeed them. It also ensures Azelf does not lose any Speed ties with Zygarde-10%, or Raikou and Starmie if they are not equipped with Heavy-(AH)Duty Boots. A pivot like Thundurus can get Azelf in safely against Pokemon like Amoonguss and Seismitoad. Thundurus can also help Knock Off Assault Vest from Pokemon like Reuiniclus and Eviolite from Chansey, allowing Azelf to more easily damage them.(Thundurus mentions) A wallbreaker like Azumarill or Mamoswine can help punch holes in the enemy team, significantly weakening them for Azelf to sweep later. Other sweepers like Gyarados and Nasty Plot Thundurus-T can also be used on hyper offense(lowercase) teams with Azelf to cover a wider range of threats that Azelf it cannot easily beat, such as Galarian Moltres and Incineroar.

U-turn lets Azelf to pivot out of away from switch-ins and escape bad matchups from foes like Umbreon and Galarian Moltres. Knock Off offers important utility to cripple defensive switch-ins like Chansey and Hatterene. Psychic is the preferred STAB option,(RC) as it is a guaranteed to OHKO on Kommo-o and Buzzwole. Psyshock is an option over Psychic to guarantee the OHKO on Nihilego and deal additional damage to specially defensive foes like Chansey and Primarina. Flamethrower allows Azelf to threaten Jirachi and Aegislash. While Timid is the preferred nature, a Naive nature can also be used to allow Azelf to deal more chip damage with U-turn and Knock Off, at the expense of some survivability.

This set Offensive pivot Azelf best fits on balance(lowercase) teams and offense(lowercase) teams that appreciate fast pivot support and a great form of Speed control a fast pivot and revenge killer. Strong wallbreakers(was wall breakers) like Azumarill and Mamoswine appreciate the free pivot Azelf offers. Azelf also appreciates both of these to deal with Umbreon, which will wall Azelf otherwise. Azelf's pivoting and deal with Umbreon. A entry hazard setter like Nidoqueen, Rhyperior, or Krookodile helps create provides additional chip damage for Azelf and its teammates to break through defensive cores like Tangrowth and Chansey. An offensive pivot like Zarude or Thundurus forms a strong pivoting core with Azelf. All of these can pivot out of defensive switch-ins like Amoonguss or Tangrowth. Azelf can then bring in Thundurus on foes like Celesteela and Galarian Moltres and bring in Zarude on foes like Seismitoad and Rhyperior. Zarude can bring Azelf in on Amoonguss and Tangrowth, while it can bring Zarude in on foes like Seismitoad and Rhyperior. Primarina is a great partner for Azelf, as it threatens Pokemon like Krookodile and Galarian Moltres that Azelf would otherwise struggle with. Keldeo can also be a great partner, as it can also threatens most checks to Azelf like Incineroar. In return,(AC) Azelf can also helps remove their common Grass-type counters like Amoonguss and Tangrowth after they are sufficiently chipped. Many Choice Scarf users like Krookodile and Zarude can outspeed and threaten Azelf, so a defensive teammate like Amoonguss or Tangrowth can be used to take hits from these foes.

An Adrenaline Orb can be used on the Nasty Plot set to allow Azelf to counter its most common check in Choice Scarf Krookodile, as Intimidate will boost Azelf's Speed and allow it to KO Krookodile with a boosted coverage move.(removed space) This also works with other Intimidate users like Salamence, but the tactic is rather useless against teams that do not have one of these two Pokemon. Azelf can be used as a suicide lead due to its great Speed tier and access to Stealth Rock and Taunt. While this allows Azelf to always get Stealth Rock up with a Focus Sash, a Pokemon like Krookodile,(AC) with which possesses better defensive utility and a STAB boosted stronger Knock Off,(AC) can typically do this job better. Access to Reflect and Light Screen allows Azelf to act as a dual screen setter that can also set up Stealth Rock and maintain momentum with Explosion, but Azelf will often have a hard time setting Stealth Rock and both screens and will usually have to end up choosing which screen is more useful to set for the specific occasion and passing momentum with just that one screen. Azelf can serve as a dual screens setter that also set Stealth Rock and maintain momentum with Explosion, but it has difficulties setting both Stealth Rock and dual screens. Azelf has a great physical movepool to go along with its elite Speed tier, allowing it to utilize a Choice Band set with Knock Off and U-Turn, as well as a combination of Zen Headbutt, Ice Punch, Explosion, and Trick. While the damage output can be very disruptive for the enemy team, it will typically fail to OHKO its foes, and another Choice Band user like Crawdaunt can offer a substantially more powerful Knock Off while also giving a priority attacking option with Aqua Jet.

**Choice Scarf Users**: Common Choice Scarf users like Krookodile, Zarude, Jirachi, and Mienshao all give Azelf significant problems, as they will outspeed and threaten Azelf with super effective(lowercase) STAB or coverage moves.

**Priority Attackers**: Azelf does not have great defenses,(RC) and as such will be 2HKOed by most priority attacks, including Accelerock by from Lycanroc-D and Aqua Jet by from Azumarill. Additionally, more powerful priority attacks like a boosted Quick Attack from Diggersby will KO Azelf after minimal chip damage.

Finally, Incineroar poses the most significant problem to Azelf, as Azelf will almost never have any coverage to deal with it and it can threaten to KO Azelf with Knock Off or pivot out with U-turn or Parting Shot,(AC) while Azelf cannot deal with it.
