Baby U-Turn my Switch on(Voltturn team)

Hello! Thanks for actually looking at this thread after that abomination of a title. Anyways this is my First RMT For the 5th generation, since I just got back into the competitive Pokemon scene a couple months Back. After seeing how the Meta has evolved since the early days of BW to now I decided that my first serious team would be a Voltturn team, mainly because scouting was one of my favorite aspects of the DPP OU meta game.

Now When I started this team I wanted to have a strong core of three pokemon that had U-turn or Volt switch that would be able to patch up each others weaknesses fairly effectively, and I would try to build the rest of the team around this core.

So now I present to you the latest Iteration of my Voltturn team!

mienshao.jpg

Mienshao @ Life Orb
Trait: Regenerator
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SAtk / 252 Spd
Naive Nature
- U-turn
- Hi Jump Kick
- Stone Edge
- Grass Knot

The first part of the Volt Turn Trio is Mienshao. Mienshao is a the pokemon that I usually lead off with for a few factors. Mainly due to Mienshaos high speed if I put him in first and my opponent attempts to counter him, I am able to u-turn out and get to an appropriate counter. Also due to the fact that Hi Jump kick is stupid strong I can put out great offensive pressure to get the game started right. Grass Knot is mainly used as a coverage move to help out against bulky ground or water types that high jump kick doesnt hit very well. Also Regenerator is a fantastic ability that lets me use Life orb without crippling the already squishy Mienshao.

Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 232 HP / 56 SAtk / 220 Spd
Modest Nature
- Volt Switch
- Hydro Pump
- Will-O-Wisp
- Hidden Power [Ice]

Part 2 of the volt turn trio, I needed a good fast and slightly bulky person to come in after the initial u-turn out by mienshao, and Rotom W fits that description perfectly. This is a pretty standard setup for Rotom and it helps to fill in the holes on my team. Volt switch and hydro pump are the obvious moves that are pretty much obligatory on most Rotom W sets, while HP Ice helps me to kill and ground or dragons in case Mamoswine has to be sacrificed or I screw up somewhere. Rotom W performs his job very well and has sometimes even managed to sweep a few teams( that weren't very good but hey the point is the same right?)

Scizor.png

Scizor @ Choice Band
Trait: Technician
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spd
Adamant Nature
- U-turn
- Bullet Punch
- Pursuit
- Superpower

And the Final part of the Volt Turn trio, A standard bulky Band Scizor. Now a reason why scizor works so well with the other Rotom and Mien is the fact that they can cover each others weaknesses very well. Scizor is great for Mienshao because he is able to tank Psychic moves for Mienshao and Rotom can tank any Fire moves that come Scizors way. Now Im not totally sold on the Choice band in this build, mainly becasue it has the nasty condition of locking me out of u-turn and killing momentum as often as it helps me OHKO a pokemon. Any advice on a way to improve Scizors synergy with this team would be most appreciated.

salamence.jpg

Salamence (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Earthquake
- Outrage
- Roost

Salamence is a farily new addition to the team, after I realized how my previous iterations lacked some power in the later stages of the game. Genearlly I will try to keep him off the field until I feel safe bringing him out. I tryed to go with a bulkier approach to him, since I feel that fits my team better. I have had some success with him but If anyone has any suggestions for a better late game sweeper I would appreciate it.

gengar.jpg

Gengar @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Modest Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Fire]

Ahh Gengar, My faithful revenge killer that has been hard at work since the initial phases of this team. He does one job and does it quite effectively, and that is to kill things real good. If my prediction skills are doing well then he can usually ohko most sweepers that are threatening my team. Also he works great as a way to gain momentum after predicting a fighting type move to take out mamoswine. Overall he doesnt have a very complicated role and he can unfortunately be setup bait for dragons if I screw up but he can accomplish most of the goals that I need from my revenge killer.

mamoswine.png

Mamoswine @ Leftovers
Trait: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Ice Shard
- Superpower
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge

Now Mamoswine is on this team for one reason and one reason only, to stop my team from being swept at the hands of a dragon. Now he does this job very well the only thing that can sometimes be problematic is ice shards low power which can end up screwing me over since I go for a tankier leftovers build on Mamo, which Im not sure is best. It usually works out for me, but I have missed some kills because of this. Now besides ice shard and its wonderful utility, the other moves on this set are to take care of any steel types that I need to, mainly heatran since he can be the bane of my existence at times.

Thank you a ton for reading about my team and all criticism is extremely valuable to me. I have already made numerous changes to this team from its initial stages so if you see any holes that are obvious to a more experianced player, please let me know! Anyways I thank you again.

Hey man, nice team.

This is a solid Volt-Turn team you have here, I like the synergy it has and I notice you are using the ever famous combo of Scizor + Rotom-W, which is always nice. I do see some flaws, however, and hopefully my rate can help iron out those flaws. With that said, let's get to the rate. Alright, first up, on your Mienshao, I would like to suggest running Hidden Power Ice over your current choice of Grass Knot. With Hidden Power Ice, Mienshao is able to grab the KO on Gliscor and non-scarfed Landorus with some prior damage. Up next, I would like to recommend running an EV spread of 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD on Scizor over your current one. With this spread Scizor still has the bulk and Attack it needs, but it also gives you an extra chance to switch-in to Stealth Rock. Up next, I would like to recommend running 4 Special Attack EV's and a Naive Nature over your current EV spread and Nature, as well as Fire Blast over Roost on your Salamence. Fire Blast has Salamence get past Ferrothorn, Scizor and Forretress, troublesome Steel types that Salamence has trouble with otherwise. Finally, I would like to suggest running a spread of 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe with a Jolly Nature as well as Life Orb over Leftovers. The aftermemtioned EV spread maximizes Attacl and also helps with Mamoswines below average Speed, while a Jolly nature outspeeds Breloom, Heatran and Lucario, troublesome Pokemon for him to face. Well, that;s about it for my rate. I hope my advice helped. Have fun and good luck in your future endeavours!

Give your Salamence Moxie, it will really help it sweep up weakened teams.

Personally I prefer the Dragon dance set if I am gonna be using moxie.
(this isn't even a team rate, I am just saying an opinion)

If you would like to use it though, this is my favorite set:

Salamance@life orb
Trait: moxie
120 HP / 252 Atk / 136 Spd
Adamant nature
- Dragon Claw
- Dragon Dance
- Earthquake
- Fire fang

One dragon dance and you are unbeatable by anything without scarf, 2 dances and you out speed every single Pokemon in OU scarfed or not. Cool huh? God I love this set...

I could also rate your team too if you would like but I am really tired now, so tomorrow I'll return to this thread with better suggestions if you want them. But it looks like the guy 2 comments above me has it coverd :P

Well At this point This team can handle most teams very effectively except for one that keeps coming up.

Keldeo, Im not sure If I am just playing suboptimally( very possible) or it is just a weakness my team has but any help on the Death pony front would be appreciated.

Hi, solid looking VoltTurn team you’ve got going here, but there’s a weakness or two I think we can patch up.

First off I’ll second the replacement of Fire Blast for Roost on Salamence. As a late-game sweeper, you probably won’t be recovering health all that much, you’ll be killing things instead. And while Moxie is of course a viable option, Intimidate offers many more setup opportunities against physical attackers. Fire Fang looks tempting with the attack boosts you’ll pick up, but will take way too many hits to break through Skarmory, who can Whirlwind your boosts away.

The biggest worry I have with this team is the omnipresent stealth rock. VoltTurn obviously involves a ton of switching, and 2 of your three turners are neutral to it, so that damage can rack up pretty quickly (along with Salamence being weak to it as well, limiting its Intimidate switch-ins).

I don’t want to start cutting Pokemon from your team (especially since each really has their own purpose/role on the team), but if hazards become a problem, Forretress may be the solution, as it can spin hazards away, and keep up your momentum with Volt Switch.

While we’re discussing hazards, you should consider some of your own, as VoltTurn causes lots of switches on the opponent’s side as well. Mamoswine is a candidate for the Stealth Rock setter, and I think you can replace Stone Edge, as Stone Edge doesn’t hit many things harder than Ice Shard and Earthquake (you’ve got other options to combat Gyarados and Gengar, the main two Pokemon Stone Edge helps against).

This means you’ll need to bring Mamo out earlier in the game to get rocks up, which results in the possibility of it being KO’d early. This is definitely what any Dragonite and Salamence user is going to be aiming for, knowing Mamo can ruin their sweep. To make this possibility easier to stomach, I’m going to recommend Hidden Power Ice on Gengar as well as a Timid nature. This means it can outspeed and KO a +1 Salamence. The loss of HP Fire shouldn’t be too crippling, as Salamence should be able to take out opposing Steels with Fire Blast (and Mamo can bring down Jirachi and Heatran with Earthquake as well).

Now that you’ve got a lot of Ice attacks, my last recommendation will be to replace Hidden Power Ice on Mienshao with Fake Out. This gives you pretty much free damage, and with U-turn grants it excellent scouting abilities (Regenerator helps out with Life Orb recoil). This also means you can change the nature from Naïve to Jolly.

As for Keldeo, although a monster in the rain, you do have a couple options to control it. Rotom-W’s Volt Switch hits for over 60%, and the slower switch gives you the chance to bring in Gengar for free and KO with Thunderbolt (which hits Keldeo very hard, hard enough that a previous U-turn should be enough as well). If it starts calm minding… you’re really not gonna want to let it do that. As long as it doesn’t get the sub up though, Salamence should be able to Outrage it to death.

Hope these work out for you, and good luck with the team!
