Back with a Bang! Kanto Team!

Hi smogon!

It's been quite a while since i've done a team for the RMT forums so finally here is a new team with first gen only pokemon!!
I'm a bit out of practice in terms of competitive play so i know my team has some gapping holes but hey...any and all help would be really appreciated!!!

A brief look......

This team doesn't have to be completly 1st gen, i only started it like this since it's the best gen! (in my opinion....)

One thing i'm adamant about is no weather! There is of course nothing wrong with weather teams but since they've somewhat taken over the metagame i always like it when a non weather team turns up.

Anyway enough talk down to the team.........

Starmie @ Leftovers
Trait: Natural cure
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature (+Spe, -Atk)
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
- Rapin Spin

OK! So we start of with Starmie, the offensive rapin spinner. Starmie has many roles on the team. It's the obvious rapin spinner which is incredibly important given that half the team is weak to Rocks. Starmie also acts as a great status absorber using Natural Cure. Thanks to this i can swich into a burn aimed at Gyarados or Dragonite, or even a toxic aimed and Zapdos or Mew. Even a Thunderwave, while hindering Starmie briefly can be thrown of with a simple swich. However even with Starmie's support options it can be a very large threat to the opponent. With Ice Beam, Dragons that would otherwise destroy my team can be stopped in their tracks.Thunderbolt can Kill Gyarados and hit Bulky waters for decent damge. notably Jellicent often swiches into me as a spin blocker. So, with a little prediction i can hit it with a thunderbolt on the switch and kO it the following turn. Hydro pump i there over surf for that extra punch. Using this i've been able to KO pokemon like gengar before they take me down.

Gyarados @ Leftovers
Trait: Moxie
EVs: 88 HP / 248 Atk / 4 Def / 168 Spe
Jolly Nature (+Spe, -SpA)
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Substitute
- Bounce

Bulky Gyarados is amazing! With a bit of prediction i can sub on a burn of setup then go with a dragon dance.....I've got quite a few people out with this since moxie will continue to increase Gyarados' attack till nothing can take a hit. If the opponent doesn't know how to handle him he can easily 6-0 a team.....Of course none of this means he is indestructable, with a weakness to rocks and any other passive damage he can lose Hp quickly. On top of that Bounce's two turn attack means that pokemon like Ferrothorn or Vaporeon can wall him from here to....well anywhere! infact any pokemon that resists water and has protect or even subtitute will have their way with poor Gyarados.....Still not bad for the evolution of Magikarp........

Zapdos @ Leftovers
Trait: Pressure
EVs: 248 HP / 240 Def / 20 Spd
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Thunderbolt
- Heat Wave
- Roar
- Roost

So here is the first of the two legendaries....Zapdos is to me at least the best of the birds...he just looks amazing! anyway....Defencive Zapdos forms part of the defensive, yet sometime underappreciated core of my team. Zapdos' extra bulk allows me to switchin to oncoming attacks that would kill the light weights of the team. This along with a decent amount of power Zapdos can do some damage. Scizor and Ferrothorn inperticular have to fear the heat wave of Zapdos, plus Zapdos resists most attacks that scozor or Ferrothorn carry. Roar is there to catch sweepers, setting up, of gaurd and send them packing, plus it ands so more rock damage....

Mew @ Leftovers
Trait: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature (+SpD, -Atk)
- Psychic
- Will-O-Wisp
- Softboiled
- Stealth Rock

Mew forms the other half of this defensive core, but focusing on special based attacks. However with Will-O-Wisp even the strongest physical sweeper can be crippled. With Mew as a special based defence i can force pokemon like Latias to use draco meteor and lower their Sp.atk allowing Dragonite to come in and set up....another fun thing about Mew is its ability. If a pokemon tries to toxic it, they'll be poisoned too! With good timing i can switch mew in to get that toxic on both pokemon....

Gengar @ Life Orb
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spe
Timid Nature (+Spe, -Atk)
- Substitute
- Pain Split
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast

Gengar is a very cool pokemon! Acting as a sweeper and a stall braker using the sub-split combo gengar can take on a vast number of pokemon that would destroy my team. Using substitute to escape status or leech seeds gengar can hit back hard with a Shadow ball. Shadow ball and focus blast make a great combo hiting even pokemon for aleast neutral damage. Focus blast also KOs a number of threats like Kyrem Black, Tyranitar, Hydreigon andHeatran plus it can 2HKO Ferrothorn. Thanks to his great speed Gengar can take out steels with a well placed focus blast or just hit hard with a shadow ball. pain split allows gengar to last much longer and even do so really damage to high Hp opponents like Blissy or Vaporeon.

Dragonite @ Lum Berry
Trait: Multiscale
EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spe
Jolly Nature (+Spe, -SpA)
- Dragon Dance
- Outrage
- Fire Punch
- ExtremeSpeed

So finally we come to the best pokemon ever!!! I love Dragonite and thanks to 5th gen he, and many other 1st gen pokemon, have been able to shine! Multiscale is a god sent and normally allows Dragonite to get at least one turn of set up. After a dragon dance, or two, outrage is incredible. Able to punch though most pokemon and can pull of a sweep...Lum berry helps with the set up since so many people try to burn Dragonite. Plus if they didn't try to status you lum berry with clear the confusion of outrage and allow you to go again! Obviously removing stealth rock is really important mean starmie has to still be alive. Fire punch is to hit the steels meaning every pokemon if covered except Heatran. This means Gengar or Gyarados must step up. Finally Extremespeed is there to kill the weaken pokemon and to insure dragonite isn't hit. Heatran, as i've said is a problem but after two dragon dances dragonite can 2HKO most Heatrans meaning it's much less of a threat.

Ok so that's the team.....i know i've got a sever electric weakness plus fast pokemon like weavile can give me grief, along with the like of Thunderus plus Scarfed Salamence and Latias since i also have no really dragon resistence either. I know my team is quite offencively based put i'm not much of a fan of stall teams....

Anyway please tell me what you think! As i said any help woulg be helpful!!

Thanks again,
Take care,

Lostsanity.

Hey Lostsanity, awesome team! It's a really strong 1st gen team, but I do see some problems. Mainly Dragon Types can give this team a problem, as Zapdos and Mew are the only 2 Pokemon who can actually take one hit. Choice Scarf Salamence is the main problem I'm seeing, while the other being Sub CM Latias, you have Roar on Zapdos, but if your opponent manages to keep Stealth Rocks on the feild it can definetely be a problem. So, let's get into the changes.

Changes
I recommend changing your Mew to a Physically Defensive Set with Ice Beam over Psychic, this will definitely help against Dragons, Terrakions and such. I honestly see no use of the specially defensive variant, as the only thing it helps with is Specs Latios.

Now that your Mew is Physically Defensive, I definitely recommend using a Specially Defensive Zapdos instead of your physically defensive set. This allows you to better counter Rain teams.

That's all, hopefully I helped!

You said you wouldn't mind using Pokemon not from Kanto, and you definitely have a Dragon problem, so if you don't mind I'm going to suggest using Jirachi over Mew. Jirachi can easily take on a good number of the tier's Dragons, set up SR, and beat down certain walls with Iron Head. The specially defensive set onsite should work wonders.

I'd also like to suggest a Choice Scarf Garchomp over your current Gyarados - as much as I love SubDD Gyarados, its typing and role clash with your team too much, and you also lack a revenge killer. Garchomp lowers your reliance on Starmie's Rapid Spin and removes a few synergy issues while also providing a great answer to major threats like Salamence and Volcarona. A set of Outrage, Earthquake, Stone Edge, and Dual Chop will serve you quite well - make sure you run a Jolly nature on it though!

Good luck with the team!

Hey everyone thanks for the advice!! I must say I like all the ideas and will defiantly be trying them all out! The Scarfed Garchomp is quite appealing to give me that electric immunity! It's just a shame that lightningrod Zapdos isn't released yet it could and a bit extra kick to Zapdos plus covering that 4x weakness on gyarados!

Anyway thanks for the advice and I'll start testing again!!

Take care
Lostsanity.
