Balanced Charizard X offense - currently stuck in the 1500s

Changes are in red.

This team has been my first successful gen 6 team and has gotten me on the ladder for extended periods of time ever since the release of the new rating system. It peaked at 1586 and got me in the top 100 on the ladder until i lost the very next battle, unfortunately it has been all downhill from there. Ive been stuck in the 1500s for almost a week now and I would really enjoy getting the voting requirements for the suspect and i feel this is the team to do it for me (of course i would need to drop genesect on the suspect ladder but ignore that for now). Anyways, I built this team around Charizard X and im open to replacing anyone but him.

Charizard @ Charizardite X
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 HP
Jolly Nature
- Fire Punch
- Dragon Claw
- Outrage Thunderpunch
- Dragon Dance

Charizard has always been one of my favorite pokemon and ever since he got a mega evolution Ive always wanted to build an OU team around him. I chose to use Charizard X over Y because X has more potential as a sweeper thanks to Dragon Dance and good dual STABs while Y is mainly just a wall breaker. Unfortunately, I'm just really hung up on what set to use. Dragon Dance and maxed evs in speed and attack are obvious but I can never decide between Flare Blitz and Fire Punch and Dragon Claw and Outrage. Flare Blitz and Outrage are far more powerful, but have nasty side effects, while the other two moves are just slightly underwhelming in power. After many games of playing with Charizard X, i got fed up with all the recoil that Flare Blitz was causing me because it made me too susceptible to priority. I tried Roost but i found it vey hard to pull off. So, recently I have been running Outrage, Dragon Claw, Fire Punch, and DD while leaving stuff like Heatran and Azumarill for the rest of my team. I chose to use Outrage because it allows Charizard X to muscle through shit at the end of the game without killing myself. However, Im thinking of replacing it with Thunderpunch because that covers so many of Charizard X's checks and counters such as Mandibuzz, Togekiss, and Azumarill. Finally, im caught in the dilemma consisting of Adamant vs Jolly natures. A Jolly nature allows me to outspeed scarfed Genesect after a DD boost and some annoying scarfers between base 90-100 speeds. Then again, Gensesect doesnt really threaten Charizard X, the only real drawback to being slower than it is just taking more chip damage which is further compounded by priority later and added onto the damage it cost to set up, so Im really at a loss here. Maybe sticky web support?

Landorus-Therian (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 SAtk
Naughty Nature
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- U-turn

Ive found that scarfed Lando T is actually a very good choice scarfer user, a fast u-turn + intimidate is always welcome and it acts as a good check and lure to things like Mega Lucario, Mega Pinsir, Mega Charizards, Volcanra, etc. I opted for an Adamant nature over a Jolly nature becauses with a scarf Lando T is already fast enough and I dont think it misses any key speed tiers anyways. All the moves are pretty obvious except Hidden Power Ice. Im thinking about replacing it with either Knock Off or Superpower because it is surprisingly weak against even 4x threats but I dont see much of a use for Knock Off or Superpower either.

Genesect @ Choice Band
Ability: Download
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 SAtk
Hasty Nature
- U-turn
- Iron Head
- Extreme Speed
- Ice Beam

Genesect wasnt banned last gen for nothing and its clear why. With a good typing, great ability, fantastic movepool, and arguably the best mixed attacking stats out there it can be effective and versatile with so many sets. I chose to use a Band over a Scarf because not only can i bluff a scarf, but whenever Genesect gets and attack boost, something is getting nuked. The moves are standard for A choice band set but I decided to go with Ice Beam for any Landorus Ts and Gliscors cocky enough to stay or switch in on Gensect. However, i would be against considering Flamethrower or Blaze Kick.

Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SDef / 252 HP / 4 SAtk
Calm Nature
- Lava Plume
- Stealth Rock
- Roar
- Will-O-Wisp

Heatran is my special wall that has great synergy with Rotom-Wash. It counters many annoying things such as talonflame and genesect while providing rocks as well. I prefer using Lava Plume and Will-O-Wisp together to get guaranteed burns on things like Azumarill while being able to fir off Lava Plumes as well even if it may seem a bit redundant. Roar is beyond useful and it gives heatran something to do after setting up rocks while pissing off opponents who keep trying to switch themselves. Overall I like Heatran and think i was a good edition to the team as because of its synergy and good defensive typing.

479-wash.png

Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 Def
Bold Nature
IVs: 28 Spd
- Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Will-O-Wisp
- Pain Split

I honestly see no reason why not to use this thing on every single team because it has great utility, counters so many pokemon, and can easily obtain momentum. The only tossup. I ever have when using this guy is the Chesto Rest set vs. the Leftovers Pain Split set. Both are good but i went with the latter due to the general reliability. Also, I run 28 speed ivs to ensure I always go last against opposing Rotom Ws. I chose 28 because i know a lot of people run 30 and a few others run 29 and since i dont think the few extra points make any difference i went down to 28.

Zapdos @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SAtk
Bold Nature
Ivs: 30 Spd
- Volt Switch
- Heat Wave
- Roost
- Defog

Zapdos was the last edition to my team and really excels at its jobs of reliably keeping stealth rock out of Charizard's way with Defog. It also walls many threats such as Mega Lucario, Mega Pinsir, and Talonflame and can threaten stuff like Excadrill and Bisharo with Heat Wave, who are common switch ins. I used to have a Skarmory here before Zapdos and a Latios (both with defog) before that but the durability Zapdos provides and it's consistency of getting rocks off the field while maintaing momentum is simply amazing. I use 30 speed ivs to volt switch after other uninvested base 100 speed pokemon attack, giving a teammate a free switch in.

One of the hardest questions Ive had to ask myself is if Charizard X is a better sweeper or wallbreaker. I believe that both sets are similar on paper, however the wallbreaker set would probably run 3 stabs + dd and an adamant nature all of the time. On my team particular Charizard X is meant to be a sweeper although ive used it as a wall breaker very effectively during some battles. I think that both sets are roughly the same in general, but the team support and the strategy going into the battle varies from set to set. In this sense Charizard X could be used as either a wallbreaker or a sweeper, depending on the team it is facing. So, with that in mind i was thinking about trying to incorporate either a scared/banded Terrakion or Garchomp somewhere on the team.

Finally, Ive noticed that my team has a few glaring weakness, most notably water types such as Keldeo, Belly Drum Azumarill, Mega Gyarados, and Manaphy. I only have one water resistance and a few weakness so if i let them set up they can usually sweep me. The other big problem I have is Substitute Attacker Kyurem B because many of my pokemon fail to break it's sub in one hit. Finally, once my opponent realizes the genesect isnt scarfed and Landorus T is I tend to get screwed. Earthquake is a sucky move to be locked into and is often taken advantage of and Gensect isnt a fast as it would like to be, thus limiting both of their switch in opportunities. Anyways, i think this is a list of all the major problems that are holding me back and if I can fix them I believe Ill be able to get the requirements for the suspect test on the OU ladder.

Right off the bat i see a glaring excadrill weakness and the only pokemon i could see changing that other than your scarf lando is replacing heatran with assault vest conkeldurr. Besides that you have a pretty solid team.

Glaring excadrill weaknesses? Zapdos isn't weak, Lando isn't weak, and Lando OHKOs it, Genesect OHKOs it, Charizard OHKOs it, while the team may look like, in the right situations that Exca can do a lot of damage, think about whether it's going to get the chance to do so with the threats in this team!

Now onto my opinions: I like the fact you have Fire Punch on Charizard, I have done this before when I am not running roost since you can be slowly worn down by Flare Blitz, if Fire Punch is working, then awesome. I would however, not have both of Outrage and Dragon Claw, mostly because I don't like Outrage in gen 6 (you can get trapped too easily by fairies and Aegislash) and also because at +1 and with the addition of Tough Claws, Dragon Claw hits incredibly hard and OHKOs most of the pokemon that Outrage would! Try this instead:

Charizard @ Charizardite X
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 HP
Jolly Nature
- Fire Punch
- Dragon Claw
- Thunderpunch
- Dragon Dance

For Gyarados and Azumarill! Also it becomes incredibly powerful under the Tough Claws boost and even more at +1!

30 Spd IVs on Zapdos? Why not 31?

Ok I was thinking about trying that out since I believe thunderpunch is a superior coverage option to earthquake anyways. Also, I forgot to mention the purpose of the 30 speed ivs, that's so zapdos can volt switch after other uninvested base 100 speeds attack, giving a teammate a free switch in.
