Hey, everyone. I'm relatively new to competitive battling, but I've really taken up an interest in it. On the other hand, I'm not new to Pokemon in the slightest. I can still remember playing the 1st Gen games on my Gameboy! However, with the release of X/Y (and the very obvious push towards making online battles easier than ever), I realized that maybe it was the time to get into the whole battling thing. I've done a lot of forum lurking here on Smogon and GameFAQ, as well as countless other sites (even the occasional YouTube tutorial video). During that time, I've learned quite a lot about the meta game and the basic fundamentals of battling competitively. Regardless, there is still a lot to learn, and that's why I'm here. While I'm still in the mindset of only using Pokemon I think look cool, I'm very adaptable and willing to make the changes needed for my team. The team I'm running was just a mix of Pokemon I like, and the team has surprisingly done well. I always try to aim for balance and some synergy. However, I feel it's best to leave it to the veterans here to conclude if that exists on my rag-tag band of Pokemon. On that note, we can begin!
The Team
Deoxys-S @ Focus Sash
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 188 Defense / 68 Speed
Impish nature
- Stealth Rocks
- Taunt
- Magic Coat
- Fire Punch
Deoxys is my suicide lead. I had never tried a suicide lead, and I enjoy Deoxys, so it was naturally my first choice. The EV spread is meant to give Deoxys a bit of survivability with the HP and Defense allocations. Deoxys out-speeds most leads as it is, so I didn't find the need to max out Speed. Stealth Rocks are the obvious choice here for hazards. Taunt is to quickly shut down most leads, while Magic Coat is to bounce back hazards I might not necessarily have (such as a Sticky Web). Fire Punch is just average coverage on some leads such as Scizor or Ferrothorn. The Focus Sash is present just to prevent OHKO's, though I feel that would rarely be the case. Nothing too special going on here.
Wobbufett @ Leftovers
Ability: Shadow Tag
EVs: 28 HP / 228 Defense / 252 Sp. D
Bold nature
- Mirror Coat
- Counter
- Encore
- Safeguard
Dude. Wobby is no joke. Seriously, I love this Pokemon. Wobby's job is obvious - trap Pokemon and take them down. I utilized my EVs to make Wobbufett bulkier to complement its massive health stat. Mirror Coat and Counter are obvious choices, as they just tear through enemies. I love seeing Pokemon try to use super effective moves on Wobby, only for me to OHKO them. Wobbufett's biggest job on my team is to trap problem Pokemon, whether they be powerful walls, sweepers, or counters for my own sweepers. Encore is there to stall set-up sweepers, and if timed right, helps me immensely. Safeguard is my teams safety from status effects, however I think I might change it to Destiny Bond to truly ensure Wobby never goes down alone. This Pokemon has really worked wonders on my team. The only real threat to Wobbufett are Pokes that U-Turn.
Charizard @ Charizardite X
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spd / 4 HP
Adamant nature
- Dragon Dance
- Dragon Claw
- Earthquake
- Flare Blitz
Nothing unique here. I was in need of a physical sweeper (and preferably a Mega). I wanted to go with Pinsir originally, but I did not want even more of a weakness to Rock and Ice alongside my Goodra and Togekiss. Charizard is your basic physical sweeper who really has the potential to shred teams apart once it can set-up. The EVs are pretty explanatory, as well as the move choice. I think I've done a decent job of covering Charizards weaknesses as well. Excadrill resists Rock while being my RS user to clear things up for Charizard, and Togekiss can be my switch-in for an impending Dragon attack. Overall, I think Charizard does a good job of sweeping for the team.
Goodra @ Assault Vest
Ability: Gooey
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Sp. D / 4 Sp. A
Modest nature
- Thunderbolt
- Sludge Bomb
- Flamethrower
- Dragon Pulse
I think Goodra makes a nice fit to this team. On paper, the overlapping weaknesses of Ice and Dragon stemming from Charizard X and Togekiss seems a bit overwhelming, but this Goodra is a tank. With the Assault Vest and the EV spread, Goodra can take those hits and often not even drop below half health. I'm willing to replace Goodra, but I've yet to find a Special Wall who can maintain such good coverage. TB is my only electric type move on the team, and the same goes for Sludge Bomb. SB is nice for Fairy types who switch in to take down Goodra, and typically expecting a OHKO. Flamethrower and DP are just added coverage moves that all add up into making Goodra a tough Poke to switch in to.
Excadrill @ Air Balloon
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 176 HP / 52 Atk / 80 Def / 202 Sp. D
Adamant nature
- Rapid Spin
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Swords Dance
This Excadrill is a bit different from the most commonly ran variant. I wanted Excadrill for one main reason - rock/ground coverage and a Rapid Spinner to clear the way for Charizard. I wanted a bulkier version of Excadrill so that he could take a hit or 2 and get his job done. So far, it's worked great. Mold Breaker helps with Pokemon such as Rotom. Rapid Spin is a self-explanatory choice. EQ/RS are for basic STAB coverages, and Swords Dance is a nice bonus I can stick in if I predict a switch-out. More so, with the bulkiness, I can get a Swords Dance while simultaneously taking a super-effective hit. This set has proven to be pretty effective thus far, and I enjoy the way it works.
Togekiss @ King's Rock
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 176 HP / 80 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid nature
- Nasty Plot
- Flamethrower
- Dazzling Gleam
- Air Slash
Nasty Plot Togekiss is...nasty. Seriously, I have 6-0'd people on more than one occasion with this Pokemon. Instead of the predictable paraflinch set, I went for a special sweeper. I love Togekiss, and I love offensive Flying types. Flinching is just an added bonus on this set with the pairing of Serene Grace and King's Rock. The EV spread helps maintain some bulkiness on Togekiss. I've rarely ever been OHKO'd with Togekiss, actually. The speed is definitely unexpected as well. A lot of people don't see Flamethrower coming, which has helped immensely in the past. This Togekiss is an absolute monster and I love it. One Nasty Plot and this Togekiss won't go down without taking at least 2+ Pokemon with it. Just for an idea of the damage, this Togekiss, after a Nasty Plot boost, brought Mega Venusaur to roughly 20% health in one hit, and it even flinched.
Well that's my team =) Like I said, I'm very open to suggestions, such as swapped out moves/EVs/ and even swapping out Pokemon. Thanks for reading!
