Thanks to the raw power of Fishious Rend, Barraskewda is a devastating wallbreaker capable of 2HKOing even sturdy Water-resistant foes like Eternatus, and its excellent Speed tier allows it to check to a range of dangerous threats and serve as a potent late-game cleaner. Barraskewda's coverage moves hit the few Pokemon that can take on Fishious Rend. Bolt Beak is for Imposter users and bulky Water-types like Golisopod and Toxapex, V-create hits extremely physically bulky Steel-types like Fur Coat Melmetal and Grass-types like Gourgeist, and Earthquake is a reasonable alternative that hits harder against Eternatus and Zekrom. Barraskewda also makes good use of U-turn to chip down its checks, keep up momentum, and scout for Dynamax. Most of the time, Barraskewda doesn't need to use any moves besides Fishious Rend, making it very flexible in terms of coverage options. Moves like Trick, Aqua Jet, and Close Combat can also be used depending on the team's needs. Intrepid Sword is generally the preferred ability, as it provides the greatest damage output, although Tough Claws is less vulnerable to Imposter, Prankster Haze, and Spectral Thief. A Jolly nature is necessary to ensure that Barraskewda can outspeed threats like Galarian Darmanitan-Z, Eternatus, and Mewtwo.
Barraskewda's bulk is very poor, so it appreciates being paired with Pokemon with pivoting moves that can get it in safely. Examples include defensive Pokemon with Teleport like Melmetal and Toxapex, or special wallbreakers like Choice Specs Lunala and Refrigerate Kyurem-W that can lure in special walls and use Volt Switch to pivot into Barraskewda to force them out. If a Pokemon running Imposter comes in against Barraskewda, it's important to have a Pokemon like Fur Coat Eternatus or Water Absorb Rhydon that can switch in and handle it. A teammate with Drizzle can make Barraskewda far more challenging to take on, as the rain allows it to cleanly OHKO Melmetal and 2HKO Fur Coat variants.
