About Battling 101:
The player has the right to fight the tutor in at most 3 battles (singles or doubles), being two 2vs2 and one 3vs3. In those battles the player can use either rentals, aka, copies of pokemon owned by registered players, or his own mons. The Tutor should respond with either rentals or pokemon of his own that match the level of the ones used by the player.

The battle will play out normally, with the tutor playing to win. During the match, the tutor should give tips on moves and what-not, but only after the player orders. Comment on why a certain strategy you/they used went right/wrong and why you/they won/lost the battle.

The Pupil isn't obligated to use all 3 battles, or to use them before or after registering. They can register their team and use the 3 battles to pratice with them. Or they can use the 3 battle solely to try on stuff. Or they can test with 2 matches, register a team and then use the last one as a final test. Or any other way that seems fit.

Avoid using Substitute. This isn't ingame where a sub usually absorbs a crapload of hp. On the 2 actions I would deal 29.5hp of damage and you made it 25hp of damage, so you spent an action lowering the output by 4.5hp. Which isn't much. A simple protect would be cheaper and have a better result. Substitute is only worth it if you are blocking status, using focus punch of if you end up absorbing way more extra hp (like against a combo). Or if you used protect already.

That second sub is illegal. You can't say "by an attack". You can say "damaging water attack" or "damaging priority attack", but "an attack" (or in this case "damaging attack") isn't a valid term. Rule of thumb: if the sub can be replaced by "IF damaging attack THEN" it is illegal.

Also it is illegal (better: simply can't be triggered) because it messes with priorities. That is a tough one, but lemme try to explain. Dragalge will always act after Froslass acts at priority 0. Since Ice Fang is a 0 priority move, it will always be used before dragalge has moved, so dragalge can't hurt it before it happens. Every time you use a substitute not based on a specific attack (we call it "condition sub"), it will be checked when you tell it to. If you don't specify when it should be checked, it will be when froslass is to normally act. So this sub will be checked at priority -4 and by then priority 0 (when Ice Fang can happen) is long gone. Since ASB doesn't let a move be used outside its normal priority (sans combos or special abilities, items or arena effects), the sub simply can't activate.

did you get most of it? subs are complicated, so ask if you are in doubt.


Also I will be honest here: if you run the calcs you will notice that the best outcome comes from mega-ampharos. Sure it still is a very close damage race and dragalge actually deals slightly more damage. But once you add Light Screen and Ampharos's better speed, it ends up being your best bet vs dragalge.

Don't be afraid to counterswitch. Look at your team. Azumarill has no business facing either Rotom or Dragalge, while it sure has all business facing Armaldo. I do know that accepting a counterswitch is usually a daunting move and can backfire easily. But in situations like this one, the risk is very well worth taking. Even if Ampharos wins in the end, the remaining matchups won't be that good for you, as with Ampharos out, Rotom and Dragalge will have a much easier day.

Hmmm...nice. I just don't get the final combo. Two Ice Punches would deal more damage for less energy and you would stay have the opportunity to use other moves to prevent my offense now. While the combo temptation is hard to resist at the beginning, it isn't always the best option. You gotta calc it more often than not.
