[Overview]

In the same vein as throwaway Normal-types such as Sentret and Rattata, Bidoof is often looked down upon for his poor stats and unimpressive movepool. He does bring something unique to the table, however, in his uncanny ability, Simple, which he can use to function as a rather efficient setup sweeper. Take advantage of this one trait though, or else go with the much more well-rounded (tee-hee) Munchlax.

[SET]
name: Curse
move 1: Curse
move 2: Quick Attack
move 3: Return
move 4: Aqua Tail / Hidden Power Fire
item: Eviolite
ability: Simple
nature: Adamant / Brave
evs: 204 HP / 236 Atk / 36 Def

[Set Comments]

The best way for Bidoof to take advantage of Simple is with Curse; with it, Bidoof will reach an astounding 30 Attack and 22 Defense with just a single turn of setup (although this is actually a lot harder to come by given Bidoof's defenses and Speed)! STAB Quick Attack circumvents Bidoof poor Speed, allowing him to strike many opponents hard without having to take a hit beforehand. Return serves as the more powerful STAB move for bulkier foes such as Munchlax. In the final slot, Aqua Tail is the more conventional coverage move, but Hidden Power Fire will allow Bidoof to possibly take the problematic Ferroseed out by surprise, perhaps opening up the way for another sweeper on your team.

[Additional Comments]

The EVs are fairly standard for a Curse user, with maximum HP and Attack for more bulk and power. Eviolite pumps Bidoof's bulk further, granting him easier setup. Superpower is an option in the final slot for a physical move that can hit Ferroseed, but using it will leave Bidoof completely open to any and all Ghost-types. One Superpower will also cost one Curse, which could be crucial for Bidoof later on. Unfortunately, Bidoof does not have access to any move that will allow him to get past Frillish.

If you chose Aqua Tail over Hidden Power Fire, Bidoof becomes complete setup bait for Ferroseed. Therefore, pairing Bidoof with Magnemite is a good idea, as Magnemite can trap Ferroseed with Magnet Pull, and finish it off with Hidden Power Fire. With Superpower over Aqua Tail, Ghost-types will be a major issue, so Pursuit users such as Houndour or Stunky are recommended. Said Pokemon can also dispose of Frillish, whom Bidoof will have trouble with no matter what move he uses. Finally, since Bidoof's setup ability is somewhat impaired by his poor defenses, an Encore or sleep move user such as Cottonee or Wynaut, respectively, can help by either putting a Pokemon to sleep or using Encore on a non-damaging move to give Bidoof some elbow room.

move 4: Hidden Power Fire / Hidden Power Fighting

nature: Modest

[Set Comments]

Curse is Bidoof's best option on the physical side, which is often the better side to go with since it comes off Bidoof's higher attacking stat, has priority, STAB, and is more reliable overall. However, on the special side of things, Charge Beam is Bidoof's best bet at abusing Simple; if just one Special Attack boost is obtained, Bidoof's Special Attack jumps to a startling 28, which is often enough to pull a sweep off. Charge Beam Bidoof is also able to actually beat Frillish and Ferroseed here, which can catch some trainers off guard. BoltBeam is Bidoof's attacking core, with Hidden Power rounding off the coverage; since Bidoof lacks a strong STAB move to play with, super effective coverage is the way to go here.

[Additional Comments]

The EV spread maximizes Bidoof's HP and Special Attack stat and gives him one extra Defense point. Oran Berry is used as Charge Beam will not always boost Bidoof's Special Attack, and Oran Berry can give him more chances to set up. Besides, once Bidoof has set up, he becomes extremely hard to wall even without a boosting item.

Although Frillish is now not as much of an issue, Ferroseed can still beat Bidoof if he opts for Hidden Power Fighting, as it is not 2HKOed, and can proceed to stall Bidoof out with a combination of Leech Seed and Protect. Once again, Magnemite is a great teammate to have patch up that weakness. Without a priority move to smack them before they can, Bidoof easily falls prey to faster Fighting-type Pokemon such as Mienfoo and Scraggy. For this reason, Pokemon such as Duskull and Timburr are recommended as teammates, as they can counter Mienfoo and Scraggy, respectively.

[Other Options]

Bidoof's other ability, Unaware, can be used to allow him to be a setup sweeper check of sorts, but with his lack of reliable recovery and pathetic defenses, even unboosted foes should be able to break through him in a turn or two. Other than that, Bidoof's movepool is sparse of any other worthwhile options besides maybe Thunder Wave. Bidoof no longer cuts it as a Baton Pass receiver with the new Simple mechanics, so go find some other Pokemon for the job.

[Checks and Counters]

Frillish and Ferroseed are the best counters to Bidoof; with their superb defensive stats and resistances to his most common moves, they can set up on him with impunity. However, Frillish will still have to watch out for boosted Thunderbolts, while Ferroseed has to watch out for Hidden Power Fire. Timburr and Croagunk are bulky enough to survive a boosted Quick Attack, and can justly return the favor with a STAB Mach Punch, Vacuum Wave, or Drain Punch. Croagunk's Vacuum Wave will also conveniently bypass any Curse boosts Bidoof may have acquired. Powerful special attackers are also good counters for the same reason. Furthermore, they strike Bidoof on his lesser Special Defense stat.

[Set Comments]

Since Bidoof's regular stat boosting options (Curse and Charge Beam) seem rather lackluster, Baton Passing ithim more potent boosting from Swords Dance or Agility can be a good idea, as those boosts are doubled by Simple too. Gligar makes a fantastic Baton Passer for Bidoof, as it has access to both Swords Dance and Agility, Taunt, great bulk, a resistance to Fighting-type attacks, and an immunity to Intimidate withbecause of Hyper Cutter. With +4 Attack and Speed, and possibly even a Substitute for protection, only a select few Pokemon can stop him.

Return is the STAB move of choice, as it has good Base Power and does not cause unnecessary recoil damage (at +4, Bidoof often doesn't need the extra power of Double-Edge). Quick Attack deals with Pokemon that attempt to use priority moves to stop Bidoof, while Aqua Tail rounds off Bidoof's coverage nicely. However, Hidden Power Fire is still an option, as Bidoof still won't be able to get past Ferroseed without it.

[Additional Comments]

The EVs maximize Bidoof's Attack and Speed for sweeping, and the rest are sent into beefing up his defenses. Oran Berry is used so Bidoof has an easier time setting up Substitute, and to stick around for longer in general. Dual screen support from a Pokemon like Bronzor is helpful, allowing both Bidoof and the Baton Passer of choice easier setup. Since Frillish and Ferroseed are still big problems for this set, Scraggy can be a great partner to Bidoof, as it can deal with both of them ratherquite effectively.

[Other Options]

Bidoof's other ability, Unaware, can be used to allow it to be a setup sweeper check of sorts, but with his lack of reliable recovery and pathetic defenses, even unboosted foes should be able to break through him in a turn or two. Other than that, Bidoof's movepool is sparse of any other worthwhile options besides maybe Thunder Wave.

[Checks and Counters]

Frillish and Ferroseed are the best counters to Bidoof; if not simply because they are at worst neutral to his attacks, then because of their superb defensive stats and ability to set up on him. Powerful special attackers that can check Gligar, such as Misdreavus or Carvanha, will also be good counters, as they can hit Bidoof on his lesser Special Defense stat and scare both away before any boosts can be effectively utilized.

I posted in the Research thread; Simple is no longer affected by Baton Pass.

Aka you pass Bidoof a howl, it still has +1 Attack (instead of effective +2 like in gen 4). This is due to simple's new mechanics this gen - the stats literally boost by the amount; they aren't secretly doubled by the game.

Anywho you may want to remove that set.

i'll hide it for now and put a note in the oo section. since i'm rather unfamiliar with gen 5, i'll see what people have to say first. anyway, bump...

I suggest you change all the ''he'' and ''him'' to it, since changing some of the ''it''s to ''he'' or ''him'' is pretty awkward, and you want to be consistent with what you use, too.

Nothing much to fix otherwise.
