Team at a glance:
Hello, and welcome to my first RMT. I missed about two years worth of meta, and coming back with all the new gen 6 additions is hard at first, so I turned my attention to offense and HO teams. Wanting to get into OM of the month, I checked out the Ability Unity thread and noticed the amount of hate Gale Wings was getting. So this team looked like a perfectly fine pick to further increase the amount of new posts about banning it. The basic idea of the team is 2 Gale Wings sweepers, something to push through their counters and a bit of rain support. Let's get into it.
Moltres @ Choice Specs
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Fire Blast
- Hurricane
- Hidden Power [Water]
- U-turn
Your classic rain sweeper, this bird demolishes physical walls and unprepared teams alike. Fire blast hits steels hard outside of rain, HP Water hits rocks under rain. Great at lategame clearing, especially if rain is still up.
Braviary @ Choice Band
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Brave Bird
- Return
- Superpower
- U-turn
Braviary is chosen as the second Gale Wings user, using it formidable attack to push through special walls and offensive mons without priority. The patriotic american bird functions fine outside of rain, so it can be used as a cleaner if my rain setter is already down.
Staraptor @ Choice Band
Ability: Tinted Lens
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Brave Bird
- Double-Edge
- Close Combat
- U-turn
When I first realised that triple Gale Wings was banned, I was a bit disappointed, but then came up with this set. Staraptor attracts the usual GW counters and threatens them with powerful Tinted Lens attacks, sometimes helping me to take down a wall that would stop the other two birds.
Manaphy @ Damp Rock
Ability: Drizzle
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Tail Glow
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Energy Ball
Manaphy is great for several reasons. Its type is pure water, which allows it to grab Drizzle from Politoed. The base 600 stats are solid all around, which allows it to take some hits and hit strong under rain it brings. And last but not least, Tail Glow allows the cute little thing to boost its attack to terrifying levels, threatening to destroy walls without Unaware and allowing it to sweep once Unaware mons are down.
Keldeo @ Life Orb
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Scald
- Secret Sword
- Hydro Pump
- Hidden Power [Electric]
When thinking about a pokemon that goes well with rain, Keldeo was the first thing that came to my mind. Swift Swim doubles its already high base speed, making Keldeo outspeed scarfers and Unburden mons who rely on the speed to keep them alive. The set is a standart LO set, providing Keldeo with power and ability to switch moves. Keldeo isn't very tough and fears opposing birds, but doesn't usually go down without taking down another pokemon with him.
Raikou @ Leftovers
Ability: Motor Drive
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Calm Mind
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Thunderbolt
- Substitute
Raikou is the answer to electric types and attacks for this electric-weak team. Whenever Raikou switches in on an Electric attack, it gains momentum with motor drive and proceeds to set up with subCM to gain even more advantage. Sub is taken to counter status, Thunderbeam is basic coverage.
So there it is. I hope to get some insight into which sets can be improved and what flaws the team has. Thanks for reading!
