Let me start by saying that this is a competitive team for WiFi battles and since I'm not from japan I don't have access to pokebank yet, so please don't make any recommendations on transfer moves or if you do let me know they are transfer only. Although I did test it out on showdown and it had moderate success getting me up to around 1380.
The team building process:
I wanted to use my favorite Nuke pokemon Talonflame and Staraptor. The goal of the team is for Staraptor to tear holes in teams to setup talonflame to come in and clean up. Next I needed something to clear the way of those pesky steel types that ruin my fun so I choose scarf magneton to trap every steel not named heatran and a few others. Next I needed something to take on heatran and settled on gastrodon who is also my counter to the stupid washing machine. For the next Pokemon I needed a spinner to get rocks off the field which really rain on my parade and selected Tentacruel which also helps with dealing with heatran if needed. Finally I wanted a utility Pokemon to lay down some rocks of my own and take some of the defensive pressure off of Gastrodon and Tentacruel so I don't wear them down too much and settled on Ferrothorn.
On to the team:
Talonflame @ Sky Plate
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 80 HP / 252 Atk / 176 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- Roost
- Swords Dance
The proverbial star of the show. He is usually the last pokemon used, unless I need to finished off a weakened mon since he is the only pokemon on the team with priority. Once the way is cleared by the rest of the team if it can get a swords dance off it can potentially 2HKO the majority of the meta, the only pokemon that it misses the 2HKO everytime on are MegaTtar, Krookodile, Quagsire and Rhyperior. While rotom-w, Heatran and Mega ampharos could be potentially 2HKO. Roost is used for some longevity but it is mostly just filler. I'm not to sure on the EV spread but 176 Spd out speeds all positive base 100's and 80 HP gives me an odd stealth rock number.
Staraptor @ Choice Band
Ability: Reckless
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Double-Edge
- Brave Bird
- U-turn
- Close Combat
The Nuke of the team and my usual lead. Just spamming Brave birds or Double-edges right off the rip can disrupt a team so much, granted his speed is pretty lackluster but the amount of power is real. If I can guess the right switch it can turn into a quick and clean 2HKO or OHKO if they don't have any steels left. U-turn is used if I feel like I can outspeed and go into ferrothorn or Gastrodon to help clear a path. Close Combat is mostly filler only used when I know for sure whats going to switch in. The EVs let Staraptor destroy lives while outspeeding non-scarfed rotom.
Ferrothorn @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def/ 4 Atk
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Gyro Ball
- Power Whip
- Stealth Rock
- Thunder Wave
Ferrothorn is a great partner to Talonflame and Staraptor. Ferrothorn eats up every rock, ice and dragon moves that are directed at them. I say dragon because other than gastrodon I don't have true answer for most of them. Ferrothorn's secondary job is to place down rocks when I get the chance and spread paralysis to help Staraptor outspeed and cause havoc. While most rock moves aren't direct contact it is nice to do some extra damage occasionally. I have thought about putting on leftovers but i'll test that out later.
Tentacruel @ Assault Vest
Ability: Liquid Ooze
EVs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 16 Spd
Bold Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Sludge Bomb
- Scald
- Knock Off
This is the member of my team that is most up for debate. I choice assault vest because I needed a special wall on the team as well as a spinner. Knock off is used to hit ghosts that try to come in to block me and while I know it isn't packing a punch the ability to knock off items is a lifesaver. Sludge bomb and scald are their just for STAB and the chance to poison/burn incoming threats. I'm also considering putting black sludge on it with toxic over sludge bomb to spread out poison more effectively.
Magneton @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Thunderbolt
- Flash Cannon
- Tri Attack
The Stone cold steel killer. The standard set with flash cannon and tri-attack as filler because really who uses anything but T-bolt or hidden power fire? SKarmory is OHKO by T-bolt and non-scarfed genesects are OHKO with HP fire after stealth rock. The only steels that can't be OHKO by Magneton that are prevalent in OU are Heatran, Aegislash and mega Mawile with the latter both facing the chance of 2HKO after stealth rock. With all three handled easily by Gastrodon.
Gastrodon (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Storm Drain
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Relaxed Nature
- Scald
- Earthquake
- Recover
- Ice Beam
My answer to every steel not killed by Magneton and pretty much everything else honestly. Specially defensive Heatran is OHKO after stealth rocks while it can't threaten gastrodon back with anything other than a timely burn or roar. Gastrodon also is my switch in for every Rotom-w I see. Even though I can't hit back hard it lets me see what kind of set it's running because scarfed Rotom is a pretty huge problem if handled incorrectly. Gastrodon is my go to guy for pretty much everything because it has such an amazing typing and my only mon with an ice move for Dragons so it plays a huge role on my team.
