BIT BY BIT I'M FALLING UNDER YOUR SPELL
An Ubers RMT by Aldertz
Hello! I’m Aldertz. Most people probably know me as ULTRA LUX (meme name but it stuck), Veteran Joe, Lux92 or just Lux. I’ve been around for exactly one year now, though I’ve been lurking since around 2015. Over time, I’ve switched metas from Ubers to OU to NU to UU and eventually came back to Ubers. I do have interest in GSC OU tho and I hope to learn that at some point. Ubers fits my playstyle well - most teams look very similar so it’s up to you to truly outplay the opponent’s mons rather than trying to guess at what their set might be.
It's been quite the eventful year to say the least. I went from a curious young-in breaking back into mons after a 3 year break to an edgy asshole in Firebot to an angry shitposter in OU to trying to quit for 3 months and finally have settled down in the sections I'm interested in and have honestly stopped posting outside of saying grats to new badge holders. Irl has also been extremely eventful and has finally caught up to me. With exams coming up, a summer course and apprenticeship, an ever-increasing amount of extracurriculars in general and a school schedule more demanding than ever coming up this fall, I no longer have the time to commit to this game. I hate having to do this, considering that this is probably the end of Pokémon in general for me (I haven't had the motivation to go through in game ever since ORAS back in 2015 and I can't get a Switch) and I genuinely love this game, but it is what it is. I wrote this up to be able to say one final goodbye to the people that made this experience truly fantastic.
TEAMBUILDING PROCESS
This team was made out of a desire to build with Rayquaza, which has always been one of my favourite mons. It may not be the best breaker, but it is likely the hardest one to switch into.
Marshadow is used as a general anti-offense Mon. Rayquaza, while being actually decent Vs offense (if it comes in, which isn't as hard as it seems, it will get a kill and has incredibly powerful priority), still doesn't appreciate the MU. Marshadow aids in this.
The team here is weak to Yveltal, Xerneas, and Fairyceus. Magearna covers all 3 of those.
Zygarde Complete is the best partner to Magearna. I found that pdon was the biggest weakness at his point and Zygarde is probably the best answer to that.
Speaking of pdon, it's not necessarily required on teams but is so ridiculously good it fits on every team anyways. It's a common misconception that it's required. Anyways, it's the primal kyogre check, it sets up rocks. It also can act as an emergency answer to almost any Mon.
Fairyceus tends to be the wincon in a lot of games. At this point I was weak to Marshadow and Gear cannot handle all of fairyceus, xern and Yveltal on its own in most games, especially since both Yveltal and Xern tend to be on the same team a lot.
THE TEAM
Bit by Bit (Rayquaza) @ Life Orb
Ability: Air Lock
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Dragon Ascent
- Draco Meteor
- V-create
- Extreme Speed
Ray is a mad breaker. We know what it does - comes in, gets a kill. What people underestimate is its MU vs. offense. I’ve been told by many people it’s shit v. offense. That is simply not true. The way games play out, offense is oftentimes pressured to make doubles etc. In addition, it’s easy enough to get it in on a kill and revenge kill the foe. A well-played Ray should net you 2 kills.
Under Your Spell (Marshadow) @ Life Orb
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Spectral Thief
- Shadow Sneak
- Rock Tomb
That being said, let’s not overestimate that MU for Ray. It’s still difficult to get in, and it’s also kinda slow. Marshadow helps that MU a fuck ton. It is perhaps the ideal offensive mon - it has an unmatched ability to break through cores with just a bit of chip.
Your Smile (Magearna) @ Leftovers
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 248 HP / 8 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Pain Split
- Fleur Cannon
- Volt Switch
- Heart Swap
The team at this point, as I said, was weak to Xerneas, Yveltal and Fairyceus. Magearna single-handedly covers all 3 of these. Not much to say here, heal bell sucks.
Leave this Endless Darkness (Zygarde-Complete) @ Leftovers
Ability: Power Construct
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Dragon Tail
- Thousand Arrows
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
No better mon to pair with Gear than the pdon answer. It hard counters all Pdon sets except for mixed RP, which is effectively useless outside of setting up because the way games play out it can't take enough hits it needs to for its team.
Come along with me (Groudon-Primal) @ Red Orb
Ability: Drought
EVs: 252 HP / 56 Def / 200 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Precipice Blades
- Overheat
- Toxic
Speaking of pdon, here's our own Pdon. Kyogre was the biggest threat to the team thus far. It sets rocks, and well we know what it does.
Hold my hand... (Arceus-Fairy) @ Pixie Plate
Ability: Multitype
EVs: 252 HP / 56 Def / 200 Spe
Timid Nature
- Calm Mind
- Recover
- Judgment
- Earth Power
Final Mon. It fills the few holes this team has - reliable marsh answer, can 1v1 any arceus form if well played. This slot can also be ferrothorn, to cover pogre a bit more, but the way games play out pogre is generally better answered offensively and Zygarde isn't always reliable against marsh. In addition, it eases the strain on Gear by being another answer to yveltal.
WEAKNESSES
Primal Kyogre
Pogre is ridiculous. It probably is the best wallbreaker in the tier. Essentially the idea is to play aggressively and chip it to around 60% or so. Rayquaza and Marsh bop it then.
Mixed RP Primal Groudon
I don't like this set, I find that it frankly doesn't do shit outside of sweeping which is a travesty for pdon sets. That being said, it cannot be underestimated. As usual, chip it a bit with Zygarde and Gear and you should be able to kill with Ray’s ESpeed and Marsh’s sneak.
Sticky Web
Shit’s ass, plain and simple. That being said, it generally puts me at a huge disadvantage. Zygarde is your friend, play defensively, Ray is god.
Shout outs:
DMDW
Perhaps my best friend on this site. You're the nicest person I've met here. You've always helped me with teams, have been there to listen to me rant about literally everything, and have taught me a great bit about the tier. You're the reason I've been around for so long ever since I came back to Ubers around December. Thanks for everything man.
Zovrah Pazza SL 42
Thanks for making discord such a great experience! Whether we're memeing, venting about life or just talking about various things, it's always a pleasure. You guys are great people and I'm glad to be able to talk to you!
Flame from Heaven
You've been here from the start, with a similar join date and a similar start in OU. You've always been super nice to me, even if we haven't actually talked all that much. I'm sorry to hear that you're moving. I hope it goes well, and thanks for everything man!
AmazingMo
You were the person that got me back into Ubers. You're an incredible friend and it's always nice talking to you. You're perhaps the most fire ass team builder I know, coming up with teams in your sleep. They're always super fun to pilot. Keep on at it and I hope the best for your streaming!
Blitzamirin and the OI community
These days, mature discussion alongside actual relaxation is a rarity. I'm glad to have been able to find a community for that. You guys are super chill. Special shoutout to Blitzamirin - you're the reason I ever got to get into the community. Thanks so much!
Mova
Individual shoutout from OI because I've talked much more with you than anyone else. You're super super nice, and it's always been great talking to you. Thanks for the times!
Ubers Discord
Place is great. Whether i randomly come on and see Joyverse talk about JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure or UPL discussion, it's always a good time. Thanks n_n
So that's it. I'm probably gonna be around on discord and I might be doing the summer seasonal but I no longer plan on actively playing for a long while after that. Thanks for the memories everyone, and I'm glad to have been around.
To those that I didn't get along with - I'm sorry it turned out that way. In particular, I messed around with the OU discord far too much, and I want to apologize for that.
