Blast from the Past (Mono-Gen Sun Team)

tumblr_macxs13HCh1rpk8vu.jpg

I started this team off of my very favorite Pokemon from the First Gen, not really focusing on the synergy. This is standard fare for most of my teams. Then, from the favorites I had gathered I began to test and keep more an eye out for synergy so I altered the team to fit the metagame, tailoring it to deal with the battling scene all the while challenging myself to remain in the First Gen.
Let me know what you guys think of the team.

Teambuilding:

Two of my very favorite Pokemon in the first Gen, it was actually Alakazam being in OU that prompted me to make this team.

While perusing OU I added the quintessential Venusaur to my developing Sun team. Also, I add Gengar because I have always had good luck with pairing Alakazam and Gengar in the past. As you can see, I could not resist the shiny button.

Next I added Gyarados because I realized I did not have any water-types.

I then added a Dugtrio to trap Gyarados counters.

Now that my team was completely made, I began to test and noticed my team's general weakness to hazards and the many Dragons in OU, so I added a Spinner/Phazer, Blastoise over Gyarados.

Even with the addition of Blastoise I realized my team was still sub-par to Dragons, so I replaced my Gengar with Dragonite to deal with the issue before it became too problematic.

Shiro the Ninetales (F)
Trait: Drought
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Nature: Modest
IVs: 0 Atk

-Solarbeam
-Fire Blast
-Sunny Day
-Hidden Power Ice

Shiro works as my lead when needed, but I usually try to keep it for later, to orchestrate a late-game sweep when other inducers have been removed. It's main role is to deal with Scizor and Ferrothorn and get the jump on broken Multiscale Dragonite that may cross my path. With the popularity of the defensive set, very rarely do people expect this set, this gives me an element of surprise while using this.

LaFleur the Venusaur (F)
Trait: Chlorophyll
EVs: 72 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA / 180 Spe
Nature: Timid
IVs: 2 Atk / 30 SpA / 30 Spe

-Giga Drain
-Sleep Powder
-Growth
-Hidden Power Fire

Since I save Shiro as long as I can, I usually do not use LaFleur until I really must. Pretty standard set, but it is standard on the basis of it sheer effectiveness. I use Sleep Powder over Sludge Bomb for the extra set-up time. For some reason, however, I really do not get that so I am swaying towards switching it out. LaFleur is quite effective for taking on other weather inducers even out of Sun, as Politoed and Tyranitar does not like Giga Drain in the slightest. It usually takes a Sleep Powder to subdue the latter, however.

Nostra the Alakazam (M)
Trait: Magic Guard
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Nature: Timid
IVs: 2 Atk / 30 SpA / 30 Spe

-Psychic
-Hidden Power Fire
-Shadow Ball
-Focus Blast

I usually use Nostra mid-game to punch holes in the opponent’s team and speed the process of weakening the other team in preparation for Shiro coming out. I still use Hidden Power Fire because it is amazing how many people try to Wall/Revenge Kill Nostra with a Ferrothorn or Scizor after I start off with a Psychic. Nostra also serves as a brilliant Revenge Killer against unscarfed Terrakion and the rest of the trio. He also provides some use in fending off the Lati twins, or just do extra damage to any Dragons with unboosted Speed.

Trio the Dugtrio (M)
Trait: Arena Trap
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Nature: Jolly
IVs: 0 SpA

-Earthquake
-Sucker Punch
-Stone Edge
-Stealth Rock

I put Trio on the team to be a Trapper, but I have found that I rely on it for many other things as well. Trio works best early-game, stopping things that want to punch holes in my line to decent effect. Trio also works as a sort of Anti-Setup-Sweeper, when any sort of sweeper tries to set up on Trio I can easily put it to my advantage, as I will show below. Trio still functions wonderfully as a Trapper, trapping any Heatran that try to stop LaFleur. This is the most relied on member of this team, it never lets me down either. Even though it has a terrible BST, it does its role better than I would have ever expected.

"Anti-Setup-Sweeper Hazard" (First 4 turns demonstrate this):

Drake the Dragonite (M)
Trait: Multiscale
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Nature: Jolly
IVs: 0 SpA

-Dragon Dance
-Outrage
-Fire Punch
-Earthquake

Drake is most useful early-game, usually after Trio has been out and lain Stealth Rocks. If there aren’t any hazards I will send Drake out to set up with a Dragon Dance, if the opponent switches, then I will get two. Drake is my premier bulwark against other Dragons that can ravage my team. His Fire Punch can remove any Ferrothorn that try to wall its fury, especially after the Lum Berry gives me the opportunity for round 2. This is an issue however, if Drake fails, as he is vulnerable to Scarf Salamence then it is nearly impossible to curb the other Dragons.

Squirt the Blastoise (F)
Trait: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Nature: Bold
IVs: 0 Atk

-Scald
-Toxic
-Dragon Tail
-Rapid Spin

Squirt is the keystone to my entire team, without a doubt. With Trio and his Focus Sash, and Drake with Multiscale, I needed a Spinner. Squirt does this and more. He is the proverbial Maintenance Man of my team. In addition to clearing away the hazards it also softens the bite of many sweepers with Scald. Roar enables Squirt, as my second line of defense against Dragons to come out and tank an +1 Outrage and Dragon Tail the Dragon away, stopping it dead in its tracks with a super-effective damage bonus. It also can hit Dragons on the switch-in with Scald to weaken what would otherwise tear my team to shreds.

This being my first RMT, I hope that it is set up correctly, as I looked at other examples to model mine. Anyways, for the interest of challenge, I would like to keep this team of a First Gen composition, I feel that it encourages thinking outside of the box. If I am crazy in that, then let me know.
Thanks for reading!

Hello. Nice team. Now to the rate:
As you know yourself, steel typing wasn't introduced in generation 1 yet and that means......you're gonna have a very hard time with DRAGONS. For example, choice specs latios. Every time he gets in, something on your team is gonna die. SD Garchomp can also devastate your team in a matter of seconds with a single turn of set up. I can't see this problem fully solved unless you somehow fit chansey and slowbro in your team somewhere.
Another way to overcome this problem to an extent is to use a RELIABLE revenge killer. Venusaur doesn't have the move to revenge dragons and is also very slow outside of sun, Dugtrio on the other hand can't outspeed many threats when their speed is 1 stage higher(choice scarf or dragon dance) and also lacks the power to revenge pokemon like Garchomp. Now, my suggestion is to either use
focus sash instead of life orb on your Alakazam as it will make him a one time use, but reliable revenge killer, or use choice scarf Starmie instead of Alakazam. This is the set:
Starmie@choice scarf
Ability: Natural cure
Evs: 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 252 Spe
Timid nature
Ice beam | Thunder bolt | Psychic | Trick

With her awesome base 115 speed and decent special attack, she can outspeed and effectively revenge kill many dangerous threats, including Latios, Terrakion and Garchomp. Even though she can successfully stop a potent sweep, pokemon like choice specs Latios or choice specs Hydreigon can still easily switch out after killing one of your pokemon and come back later. The solution to this and many other threats, however, is no one else than the already mentioned Chansey. Replace Dugtrio with her and profit. Actually dugtrio's main usage is on rain teams to trap Ninetales and Tyranitar(Yours doesn't even have reversal to reliably kill him) or to remove dangerous threats that would otherwise be really problematic. If heatren is messing with your venusaur, either put him to sleep or predict him entering and double switch to your dragonite and gain even more momentum.
Chansey@Eviolite
Ability: Natural cure
Evs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 Spe
Bold nature
Stealth rock | Toxic | Seismic toss | Softboiled

Now that Dugtrio is gone you'll need someone to lay down the rocks. Chansey is gonna do it for you no matter how many times you ask her to,unlike Dugtrio. With that Ev spread, choice specs Latios's psyshock, his only hope to break chansey, will be a 3HKO after stealth rock. It means chansey can easily stall him. Even the standard mixed Hydreigon can't 2HKO her with superpower and him too will be stalled. She will still maintain her amazing specially bulk too (Equal to 0 Hp / 252 SDef calm Blissey) The 8 speed evs are for outspeeding other standard chanseys and pwning them.
That's it. I hope I was helpful.

Good team! I would recommend psyshock over psychic on alakazam to hit cm keldeo harder. I believe that with hp fire, alakazam speed ties with choice scarf ttar (confirm please): perhaps hp ice over fire? And I too agree with focus sash over life orb on alakzam.

Hp fighting on ninetales will hit heatran harder too. Hp ice is kinda blech to be honest. Most salamence are scarfed, dragonites have multiscale and extremespeed to hit ninetales hard before you pick them off with hp ice.
Starmie > blastoise might be a better option too for rapid spinner to beat ghost types and have instant recovery. Or, if you're feeling particuraly gutsy, you could opt out for swift swim spinning offensive kabutops ( just a fun gen 1 option).

Another option that you can employ for a gen 1 sun team is the nidos who can take the rock attacks aimed at your team and hit hard with sheer force and sun boosted fire blasts. Also, nidoqueen and wish chansey would form a great core for sun teams seeing as how nidoqueen can take the fighting attacks aimed at chansey. Good luck and have fun!

Thank you all for the rate, you have given me much to think about. I will look into the HP Ice on Alakazam. However, I feel a serious underestimation of Dugtrio. That is the sort of thing that makes him so very effective. People do not see it as much of a threat so they do not see what is coming. It is to a sort of unpredictability that consistently gives me an edge. With the right use, Dugtrio becomes a terrifying force to be reckoned with.
I saw it mentioned that Specs Latios is a threat to my team, and I beg to differ on the grounds...no pun intended of Dugtrio. His Sucker Punch totally devastates Latios and will 2HKO it with full HP. If it's Sash has been activated, Sucker Punch does enough damage for my Alakazam to Revenge Kill and OHKO.
I will admit that the subduing of Garchomp is a bit of a team effort for my team, but it is very do-able. SD Garchomp are not fast enough to outspeed Alakazam and with HP Ice would outspeed and OHKO any Garchomp.
I have tried a Starmie over Blastoise, but I sorely miss the use of Dragon tail, for phazing is my last resort when all my other methods have gone away. The single Dragon that I mentioned in my overview, Sarfed Moxiemence can rip through this team like it was tissue paper unless I get Dugtrio in really early.
I will most certainly look into Chansey however, and perhaps Slowbro, both of which I have been considering for the team for a while. Thanks again!

Did you read my post? I didn't tell you to replace Starmie with Blastoise.
Choice specs Latios, his draco meteor can OHKO or 2HKO all of your pokemon. This means that with every switch in he gets, something on your team is gonna die. He can simply switch out when Dugtrio wants to revenge him(arena trap works only for grounded pokemon).
Garchomp can OHKO your Alakazam even without a swords dance. This means he can catch your Alakazam on the switch in.
Scarfchomp and scarf Salamence can OHKO-2HKO all your pokemon with outrage, they outspeed all of them too.
The bad part about all these is that, dragons are so damn popular.

What do you take me for? Of course I know that Garchomp can OHKO my Alakazam...seriously. I would not switch my Alakazam into anything a Garchomp throws. That is a noob move. Alakazam revenge kills Garchomp.
On paper Latios is a threat, but in reality I rarely find it a challenge. I will repeat myself: with such frail sweepers on my team I am not crazy enough to switch my Pokemon into such a hard-hitting Pokemon. There is more to Pokemon than stats my friend.
I know you did not tell me to try Starmie over Blastoise...but if you look there is another person's post. I was responding to that.
