Why did this not get banned????
Kyurem-Black @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Teravolt
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Icicle Spear
- Fusion Bolt
- Roost
- Dragon Dance
With the recent bans of Genesect and Naganadel, most teams in my builder kind of became redundant-except this one. I wanted to build a team around Kyurem-Black and the best way to start was with my Kyu-B set. The fourth move was repeatedly changed, as Substitute, Roost, and Earth Power are all wanted. I went with Roost because after some calculations, I saw that uninvested Kyu-B actually doesn't get two-hit KO'ed by a lot of moves from a lot of mons.. The biggest being Magma Storms from Tran, Hurricanes from Zapdos, and Earthquakes from Defensive Lando-T. It's actually quite easy to set up two dragon dances while spamming roost on a mon that does 40% to you. The biggest downfall of roost is that you can get statused very easily, which is WHY-
Tapu Fini @ Leftovers
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 248 HP / 208 Def / 12 SpA / 40 SpD
Calm Nature
- Moonblast
- Knock Off
- Scald
- Protect
This is the Tapu Fini set that I came up with. The first notable thing is "No defog???". Tapu Fini is a great defogger, however in Gen 8, Defog actually removes the terrain, which is very counterproductive for Fini, who's terrain I actually want to help my Kyu-B. Rather I opted for protect and knock off. Protect is actually pretty good, as Fini gets worn down very easily, due to it not having any reliable recover outside of leftovers, and protect can help maximize its recovery. Knock is a fantastic support move and is especially valuable as a mid ground play versus heatran. The only move I'm unsure about is actually Scald. A water type move on a water type is pretty obvious, but in my games, I've almost never clicked scald. Without that burn chance on half of its targets, and with Fini being very weak, scald just isn't very smart to click. Rather, I'm considering running taunt, and investing in speed, but I don't know, and that's one area I would like help with. Now onto the rest of the Balance Core-
Landorus-Therian (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 112 Def / 144 Spe
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Toxic
- Stealth Rock
I started with a ground type and I chose Lando-T. The other options could've been Lando-I (Which I'm heavily considering), or Zygarde. The issue with Zygarde, is that I can't spam glare as much with misty terrain on the field, AND I need a stealth rocker for my team. Lando-I is something I probably should use in this slot, but Intimidate and the defensive utility of Therian appealed to me more on this team than the firepower of Incarnate. As to the set, Toxic might seem odd, but it's actually very good. A lot of Zapdos and Tornadus-T's switch into this mon, and neither of them are affected by terrain. Normally, Stone Edge is used to hit them, but in order to actually two hit KO zapdos with edge, I'd need to go Adamant atleast, and probably a bit more, which I found less useful than Toxic. I'm content with this Lando-T set, but the mon choice itself is something I would like help with.
Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 132 SpD / 120 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Magma Storm
- Earth Power
- Taunt
- Protect
Unfortunately, Heatran is necessary on any attempt at a Balance team, as its typing is incredible and one of a kind. It has two roles on this team. One is to switch into the massive threats such as Magearna, Naga and Genesect (which I know are banned now, but wasn't when I made the team), Lele and Latis, and like a dozen other things. The other role is to trap and break walls. Toxapex is the main one, (which actually lives fusion bolt at plus one wtf), but I've used it against chansey/blissey, and also mandibuzz. The set is fairly straight-forward, enough speed for aegislash and fast mandibuzz, the rest invested into bulk. Although max sp. def is an enticing option, considering I barely ever need the speed on this set, but for now I think it's fine. One Idea I had for improving the team, was to put rocks on this mon, freeing up the ground type slot for something else- such as lando-I or scarf Lando-T. But Imo, Scarf Lando-T sucks in the current metagame, so I'm definitely not running that.
Zapdos @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Static
EVs: 252 HP / 120 Def / 136 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Volt Switch
- Hurricane
- Roost
- Defog
I chose Zapdos and the Defogger for the team. It's new addition of HBD and Hurricane makes it even better than it was in Gen 7. The ev spread is interesting, It's set to outspeed adamant Rillaboom, letting this thing be a really good check to it. Otherwise, it SD's up, and does around 70% with knock off. It's also calm nature (idk if you missed that), and that is so it always survives getting two-hit KO'ed by Lando-I Sludge Wave/Psychic. Zapdos gives me a good Kartana counter, as well as a good switch in to most ground types. Now, for this slot, Mandibuzz is a another solid option, but I think Static and the extra speed give Zap the edge. However, since I'm opting to not run Mandibuzz, I need a ghost resist to check that demon horse out of hell. And so-
Urshifu @ Black Glasses
Ability: Unseen Fist
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Wicked Blow
- Sucker Punch
- Close Combat
- Bulk Up
Urshifu is actually REALLY good. It does so much damage, even without banded, It survives a lot of hits, and priority sucker punch is insanely valuable. The only thing that holds back shifu is its speed tier. If it was 5 base points higher, I would probably consider it the best mon in the tier offensively. Most importantly, on this team, it acts as a Spectrier switch in, and a psychic switch in not named tran. Urshifu combined with Kyu-B makes a very powerful offensive duo, and I encourage all of you to try it out.
Final Thoughts
The biggest issue I see with the team is Speed. I don't have a scarfer or any mon with a speed higher than 322. I also don't have yellow magic, webs, or any other notable way to control speed. To me, the only mons on this team which are replacable are Lando-T and Zapdos. Especially because Tran can carry rocks, there are other great ground types, and Mandibuzz exists. However, replacing Lando-T with its Incarnate form doesn't solve the speed issue. The funniest part about the team is that it gets beat by the same set it's built around, but I haven't seen many roost Kyu-B's as they often opt to go substitute. However, even Sub is dangerous to this team, because Hurricane and Magma Storm are very inaccurate. One possible change is switching up Zap for Mandi, and switching up Shifu for pheromosa. I've tested that version of the team, and it functions just as well, but It becomes very weak to a well played Melmetal (which is a fantastic check to Kyu-B). So let me know your thoughts, this is my first RMT, and if any of you decide to use the team, then I wish you good luck!Kyurem-Black @ Heavy-Duty Boots
