It prides itself on being an effective wallbreaker for Water-type teams that can dispatch key defensive Pokemon such as Ting-Lu, Great Tusk, and Heatran with its Ivy Cudgel. Power Whip ensures that Water-type Pokemon like Alomomola, Gastrodon, and opposing Ogerpon-W want no part in switching in. Encore locks defensive Pokemon such as Toxapex, Corviknight, and Sinistcha into unfavorable moves. Swords Dance amplifies Ogerpon-W's wallbreaking prowess, guaranteeing it a 2HKO on physically defensive Toxapex and an OHKO on physically defensive Ting-Lu with Power Whip. Ogerpon-W is threatened and outpaced by foes like Choice Scarf Meowscarda, Iron Valiant, and Sneasler; therefore, Toxapex is valued to respond to these foes. In return, Ogerpon-W can threaten Ground-type Pokemon like Ting-Lu and Great Tusk, as well as Gliscor. Ogerpon-W also appreciates Ground-type allies like Swampert and Gastrodon to block Volt Switch and check foes like Zapdos, Magnezone, and Raging Bolt, Pokemon that Ogerpon-W does not immediately threaten. Swampert also has a slow Flip Turn to get Ogerpon-W in safely.
