Project Break This Team: USUM UU Edition [Week 71 - Submissions]

Darksafadao

best of the second options

Basically, Rest Mega-Slowbro has a really good match-up versus the team. The main way to deal with bulky waters gets hit very hard by Psyshock and the team can't really prevent it from setting up, as most of the members can't really hurt it. Empoleon would be the main problem, but even then a Scald burn cancels its Leftovers recovery and from there Slowbro is in.
I chose Magneton as my second pick because it can trap Empoleon for good and make Mega Slowbro's job easier. The Mega Slowbro by itself baits the penguin in and even phazing Mega Slowbro can cause in it getting trapped.

People more or less know how effective Snorlax + Mega Altaria is. I opted for the regular CurseLax, since I find it more consistently useful in more matchups due to it not being reliant on keeping its item. I wanted a solid Scizor answer so opted with fat Infernape; I could just run Scarf but realistically Scarf Infernape is not a good Scizor answer. The EVs on Infernape are enough to outspeed Heracross and like Nidoking. Vacuum Wave is kinda just there to pick off mons like weakened Krookodile. Bronzong more or less covered things very well as far as defensive synergy goes, taking on threats like Nidoking, opposing Mega Altaria, etc. I needed a better Ground immunity than Bronzong, something to pivot in and pressure Water-types, as well as hazard removal (since I didn't want to slap Defog on Altaria unless necessary), I went with Rotom-Mow. Swords Dance Gliscor was looking annoying, so I went with Hidden Power Ice over something like Thunderbolt. The Nidoking set is a little off, but I did need Speed control to revenge kill threats like Cobalion and to ease the Manectric matchup if I'm able to catch it off guard. Sleep Talk is there because I didn't see myself needing other moves that much and doesn't hurt to have another countermeasure for Breloom.

Starmie @ Life Orb

This is a very physically weak team to an offensive Fire- Flying-type Pokemon like Talonflame that has access to priority. With another has hitting Pokemon like Starmie behind it, that has Rapid Spin, this team falls pretty quickly. Even Bronzong doesn't enjoy Life Orb Hydro Pumps. Shout out to Cynde for making this core.

With the right set scizor puts in major work vs this team, with buleltpunch to ohko malt and nidoking and to 2hko snorlax, knock off to deal with bronzong and quick attack for rotom-c , all it needs for a successful sweep is a safe setup which it can aquire from snorlax. Scizor does have problems with the infernape set, as it needs it to be at 55-65 depending on rolls, however chipping down an infernape is not known to be incredibly hard. To aid in chipping down infernape as well as keeping pressure on the team as a whole, klefki is here to provide spike support for scizor as well as reflect to help it take a little less from snorlaxs facade. klefki also helps provide just the right amount of chip to rotom-m (see calcs below) inorder for quick attack from scizor to kill it.

To end this off heres some calcs that showcase the mu well.

+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Scizor Quick Attack vs. 252 HP / 184 Def Infernape: 198-233 (55.6 - 65.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after 3 layers of Spikes

+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 188 HP / 128 Def Snorlax: 333-394 (65.5 - 77.5%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO after 3 layers of Spikes and Leftovers recovery

0 Atk Snorlax Frustration vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Scizor: 59-70 (20.9 - 24.9%) -- guaranteed 5HKO

0 SpA Infernape Vacuum Wave vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Scizor: 54-64 (19.2 - 22.7%) -- possible 5HKO

+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Scizor Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Bronzong: 530-624 (156.8 - 184.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Scizor Quick Attack vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Rotom-Mow: 177-208 (73.1 - 85.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 188 HP / 0 Def Altaria-Mega: 517-611 (152.9 - 180.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

0 Atk Klefki Play Rough vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Rotom-Mow: 76-91 (31.5 - 37.7%) -- 91.6% chance to 3HKO

Impish Nature

- Roost

Looking at the team it's pretty clear to see that SubCM Chandelure would have a good time against most of the Pokemon there, with Nidoking being the best answer and even that potentially fails to do so with a few CM boosts or so. Infernape and Snorlax are completely unable to touch Chandelure so being able to bring in one or the other is essential in a Chandy partner. Thus, I decided on using bulky SD Scizor, because this gives Chandelure a pivoting partner that brings in Infernape, as well as being able to switch into Nidoking to scout its moves throughout any match while also covering any other Pokemon that could potentially get through Chandelure like Psywave from Bronzong to wear Chand down or Rotom-C's Volt Switches.

Edit: Could easily use Defog > SD on Scizor to make it remove Rocks that are probably the best way of wearing Chand down as well
Edit2: The Scizor set loses to Snorlax so even more Chande bait

One DD from haxorus can break the whole team (outspeeding scarf nidoking) as mold breaker eq allows it to break through bronzong and un-mega'ed altaria gets 2HKO'ed by poison jab while mega alt gets OHKO'ed by poison jab at +1(and un-mega'ed altaria cannot OHKO haxorus). Chandelure switches in on bronzong and baits out snorlax(not much switchins in the team) where it can either trick or memento, giving a chance for haxorus to set up

128+ SpA Altaria Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Haxorus: 168-198 (57.3 - 67.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 252 Atk Life Orb Mold Breaker Haxorus Poison Jab vs. 188 HP / 0 Def Altaria-Mega: 343-406 (101.4 - 120.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Terrakion @ Rockium Z
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stone Edge

- Swords Dance

Since the only check to dd refresh mega altaria and terrakion is scarf nidoking these two can be used to break apart this team with relative ease. Mega altaria is capable of chipping its own check over the course of the match and terrakion can flat out lure it. Since the bronzong lacks any steel stab and since it is the initial malt switchin due to the potential of earthquake it becomes delicious setupfodder for malt. Terrakion switches into snorlax and takes complete advantage of it. In adition nidoking cannot lock itself into 1 move to hit both malt and terrakion, as malt pre-mega has a very useful ground immunity.

This team embodies adaptability after numerous metagame shifts, and it can still work in the current metagame by virtue of Choice Specs + Sleep Talk Kommo-o. Krookodile is a Pokemon that can address some of the speedy Pokemon in the tier. Empoleon and Sylveon serve as the defensive backbone for the team and they provide some forms of support for the whole team (hazards, Defogging, longevity, among others). Mega Beedrill, while not common in the current metagame, still is a fierce Pokemon that deals massive damage to the opposition. Finally, Moltres serves as the Agility sweeper for the team and acts as one of the biggest checks against physically-inclined Steel-types, which can potentially get burned by virtue of Flame Body.

Get your cores in by Thursday, folks.
