Bulk Up Emboar [QC 0/3]

This version of Emboar was my answer to the RU tier back when I first started playing it (and before Emboar was RU). It is essentially a setup sweeper which utilizes Flame Charge and Bulk Up to put Emboar in an untouchable bracket of asskickery. I stopped using it a long time ago because I gradually began to feel like it wasn't competitive enough, but every once in a while I try it out again, and it really surprises me.

I deeply apologize because I've forgotten the ideal EV spread I came up with for this set. I don't have time to go testing again, so I'm just going to list the spread I first came up with and I'll let you guys patch it up if you like the set.

[Overview]
  • Set up physical sweeper.
  • Potential to sweep/wall/wallbreak all at once.
  • Weak on the specially defensive side.
  • Has too many checks and counters in RU to remain competitive there, imo.
[Set]
name: Bulk Up Boar (BUB)
move 1: Flame Charge
move 2: Bulk Up
move 3: Wild Charge
move 4: Superpower/Earthquake/Flare Blitz
item: Expert Belt/Leftovers
ability: Blaze
nature: Impish
evs: 156 HP / 252 Def / 100 Spe

[Set Comments]
  • Strategy is simple. Flame Charge the first turn, Bulk Up as much as possible the following turns, kill spree when your opponent realizes what's going on. Some variety required if your opponent has a check or counter. For instance, +1 Wild Charge with Expert Belt OHKOes Slowking and friends, so Bulk Up first if you sense them coming.
  • The Flame Charge/Bulk Up combo allows Boar to beat the likes of Gallade, Medicham, Defensive Drapion, Druddigon, Mandibuzz, and a whole slew of other mons who normally have an edge in bulk/speed/power over offensive variations of Emboar. It is also pretty hard to stop him from setting up one or the other due to his typing and offensive pressure.
  • Superpower is recommended for the last slot, but if Nidoqueen ever returns to RU, consider EQ or Flare Blitz instead. Try to avoid Superpower as much as possible in order to maintain Bulk Up boosts. See the replay below for some master usage.
  • Superpower sprees are fun as hell tho. Just saying.
  • If going with Expert Belt, I would strongly consider replacing Wild Charge with EQ just to add staying power. Team support is needed against Boar's checks and counters in this case.
[Additional Comments]
  • Again, I've forgotten the ideal EV spread for this guy. I'm pretty sure I added some Atk in there and took off some HP. The goal is to beat certain mons in speed and have enough bulk to tank Gallade's Psycho Cuts. Sceptile and Accelgor can sometimes outspeed +2 BU Boar as well (hitting with Acrobatics and Final Gambit, respectively) so the Spe distribution is probably for outspeeding them.
  • Bulk Up + Leftovers turns Emboar into a late game wall, but there are probably better mons for that.
  • This guy + Musharna and Mandibuzz were my original Fighting/Psychic/Dark core. Yes, in RU. There's a lot of synergy there.
  • Trick Room BU Boar is just insanely fun to play with. Consider Curse over Bulk Up if you're interested in that, and redistribute those Spe EVs to Atk. Enjoy nerding out on boost calculations.
[Checks and Counters]
  • Feraligatr, Quagsire, and Slowking are ubiquitous counters to BU Boar. Nidoqueen used to be a common answer as well (if not THE answer).
  • Qwilfish can Intimidate and then chip away at Boar with Waterfall, but it typically gets OHKOed by Wild Charge two turns later. Entei and Druddigon can switch into certain moves, but neither of them can survive +1 Superpower. A lot of things cannot survive +1 Superpower. A lot of things cannot survive +1 anything from Emboar.

Disregarding the fact that this is the wrong format for a singular set (no overview or counters for these), this set seems pretty bad. You are relying on what is essentially a 50 BP STAB move as your 'reliable' STAB, which was too weak to even kill an Accelgor and your strongest move is counterproductive with Bulk Up.

There's also the fact that you are suggesting using Trick Room with Flame Charge and you say that the speed EVs can probably outspeed Sceptile and Accelgor at +2. If you don't know your EVs I question how much you have actually tested this, even with the replay, which didn't have that great of an opponent to be honest (keeping Accelgor in on an Emboar is an awful idea, for example). Then there's the fact that at Slowkings aren't OHKOed by a +1 Expert Belt Wild Charge and the fact you are using an Expert Belt without any offensive EVs which is not a good idea.

There are just a lot of problems with this set and the format of this set.

Hi there n_n! Before I go out and test this set, I'd like to point out that since you're only putting in an individual set, there is no need for an Overview and C&C. Also, the EVs that you currently have are illegal :o A Pokemon can only have up to 508 EVs iirc (252 max in each set, you know that obv). Also, there are a few glaring problems with the set itself; firstly, the idea of Flame Charge was rejected when Emboar's initial analysis was being made, and using the same move alongside another setup move is going to be very hard to pull off imo, especially since Emboar doesn't have the best bulk (it is above-average though). That said, I'll have to test this out first to provide further comments, so for now, I'd recommend you fix the things I mentioned (feel free to disagree with me last point though, since I'm not QC).

nvm Swamp-Rocket ninja'd me :P

Emboar is not even that bulky so it doesn't use Bulk Up well at all. No recovery options just seal the nail in the coffin. In addition, this is not the correct formatting,
