OU Bulky Dragonite [DONE]

Gambit

is a Contributor to Smogon
[OVERVIEW]

Thanks to its wide variety of coverage moves, access to Dragon Dance, an incredible ability in Multiscale, and great utility moves in Roost and Heal Bell, Dragonite can function as a threatening sweeper, defensive wall, and in some cases, even both. Dragonite's endless amount of coverage moves allow it to hit Pokemon that can otherwise check it, like Landorus-T, Heatran, and Zapdos. Dragonite's Dragon / Flying typing also allows it to switch in on many different Pokemon, such as Blacephalon, Blaziken, Urshifu-R, Heatran, and Rillaboom while also being able to use Roost to check them long-term. However, Dragonite is weak to Pokemon like Weavile, Tapu Lele, and Dragapult, as Weavile can easily OHKO it with Triple Axel, whereas Tapu Lele and Dragapult can 2HKO it with Moonblast and Draco Meteor, respectively. Dragonite is also heavily reliant on its Heavy-Duty Boots to function properly, as it is weak to Stealth Rock.

Set Description
=========

Thanks to its incredible Attack, access to Dragon Dance and Roost, and decent bulk aided by Multiscale, Dragonite functions as a sweeper while also checking Pokemon like Kartana, Rillaboom, and Blaziken. Earthquake provides a coverage option to hit Pokemon like Toxapex, Heatran, and Tyranitar. Dual Wingbeat deals solid damage to Urshifu-R, Rillaboom, and Blaziken, whereas Ice Punch hits would-be checks to Dragonite such as Zapdos and Landorus-T. Roost allows Dragonite to repeatably switch in to Pokemon like Kartana and Urshifu-R while also working well in conjunction with Multiscale. 160 Speed EVs are mainly used to allow Dragonite to outspeed utility Tornadus-T and Adamant Weavile at +1. 248 HP and 68 Defense EVs allow Dragonite to tank an unboosted Ice Shard from Jolly Weavile after Stealth Rock, whereas the 8 Special Defense EVs prevent it from getting 2HKOed by Shadow Ball from Choice Specs Blacephalon. The rest of the EVs are put into Attack to improve Dragonite's offensive capabilities, allowing Dragonite to 2HKO targets like Utility Tornadus-T at +1.

Team Options
========

Dragonite heavily appreciates entry hazard setters, as they wear down Pokemon that check it like Slowbro and Tapu Fini and allow it to obtain more KOs. Ferrothorn is an incredible teammate for Dragonite, as Ferrothorn struggles with Fire-types like Blacephalon, Blaziken, and Volcarona, which Dragonite can check. In return, Ferrothorn can switch in to Pokemon like Tapu Lele, Tapu Fini, and Weavile as well as function as a Knock Off absorber from Clefable, Ferrothorn, and Toxapex. Clefable can absorb Knock Off and Toxic; grant general support with utility moves like Knock Off, Stealth Rock, Thunder Wave, and Aromatherapy; and also function as a check to Weavile and Choice Specs Dragapult. Landorus-T is appreciated for its Stealth Rock support in addition to other great utility moves in Knock Off, Defog, and Toxic. Wallbreakers like Weavile, Melmetal, and Choice Specs Tapu Lele are appreciated for their ability to break through defensive cores for Dragonite, giving it a much easier time sweeping. Tapu Koko and Victini make good partners, as they can threaten Corviknight and Skarmory while also being able to bring Dragonite in much more easily with Volt Switch and U-turn, respectively.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Fire Punch can be used on Dragon Dance sets to threaten Ferrothorn, Corviknight, and Skarmory, though Dragonite doesn't appreciate dropping any of its coverage moves or Roost. Defog can be used on utility Dragonite sets over Heal Bell to control entry hazards but doing this means that it can't function as a status switch-in or cure teammates of their status. This is in addition to the fact that it's a subpar Defogger, as it doesn't like being burned or poisoned, and it appreciates its Heavy-Duty Boots. Extreme Speed is an option on Dragon Dance sets to outspeed Weavile's Ice Shard and OHKO it at +2 on offensive Dragonite sets, though there aren't many other benefits to it. Red Card is a decent alternative to Heavy-Duty Boots on Dragon Dance sets, as it can force out defensive checks like Clefable in addition to offensive checks like Dragapult and Tapu Lele, though this means that Dragonite is forced to take Stealth Rock damage.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Ice-types and Ice-type Coverage**: Weavile is the single greatest offensive threat to Dragonite, as the second and third hits of Triple Axel ignore Multiscale and are able to OHKO any Dragonite set. Jolly Weavile also outspeeds +1 bulky Dragonite, making it quite difficult to sweep. Pokemon like Slowbro, Galarian Slowking, and Buzzwole run Ice Punch and Ice Beam, respectively, to hit Dragonite.

**Knock Off**: Knock Off users like Tornadus-T, Landorus-T, and Kartana rid Dragonite of its Heavy-Duty Boots, making Multiscale useless if Stealth Rock is up.

**Status**: Poison and burn from Pokemon such as Toxapex, Slowbro, and Rotom-W are quite detrimental status effects for Dragon Dance Dragonite sets, as both remove the effects of Multiscale and can quickly wear it down. However, utility Dragonite does not have this issue, as it rids itself of status effects with Heal Bell.

**Fairy-types**: Defensive Fairy-types like Clefable and Tapu Fini can take hits from Dragonite and hit it super effectively with Moonblast, whereas Tapu Fini can also burn it with Scald. Offensive Fairy-types like Tapu Koko and Tapu Lele can threaten Dragonite with Dazzling Gleam and Moonblast, respectively.

**Bulky Steel-types**: Ferrothorn, Corviknight, and Skarmory all wall Dragonite due to their massive Defense stat and can easily use Leech Seed and Roost, respectively, to stay healthy throughout the course of the battle. Their Steel typing also nullifies their weakness to Ice Punch, making it difficult for Dragonite to break through them. Corviknight and Skarmory can use Iron Defense to match Dragonite's attack boosts, making them nearly impossible to KO.

**Faster Threats**: Dragapult, Hydreigon, and Nidoking all outspeed Dragonite if it is unboosted. Dragapult and Hydreigon can threaten Dragonite with Draco Meteor, whereas Nidoking can threaten it with Ice Beam.

[OVERVIEW]

Thanks to its wide variety of coverage moves, access to Dragon Dance, an incredible ability in Multiscale, and great utility moves in Roost and Heal Bell, Dragonite can function as a threatening sweeper, a defensive wall, and in some cases, even both. Dragonite's endless amount of coverage moves in Earthquake, Fire Punch, Ice Punch, Superpower, and many more fluff; these moves will be discussed in more detail later on in the analysis allow it to have a way to hit almost the entire tier. Dragonite's utility set even makes use of its lower Special Attack stat, as Ice Beam can hit Landorus-T, Skarmory, and Zapdos without the punishment of making contact. this is explained in the set details of this set, perhaps list these pokemon (edit as needed to accomodate for other moves) in the prior sentence as pokemon that dnite's coverage helps against. Dragonite's Dragon / Flying typing also allows it to switch in on many different Pokemon, such as Blacephalon, Blaziken, Urshifu-R, Heatran, and Rillaboom while also being able to use Roost to check them long-term. So, if your ever looking for a powerful sweeper or a defensive wall that can check many common threats, there may be a chance Dragonite is the Pokemon you're looking for! restatement of intro sentence

mention some of dragonite's flaws here (i.e. heavy reliance on HDB to properly function, weak to common pokes like weavile, dragapult, tapu lele, etc.)

put a sentence before ferro and clefable saying how entry hazard setters help dragonite more easily get KOs and wear down checks Ferrothorn is an incredible teammate for Dragonite, as Ferrothorn struggles with Fire-types like Blacephalon, Blaziken, and Volcarona as well as Urshifu-R, which Dragonite can check, though it should be wary of Ice Punch from Urshifu-R. Dual Wingbeat is a STAB move that deals solid damage to Urshifu-R, Rillaboom, and Blaziken, whereas Ice Punch hits would-be checks to Dragonite such as Zapdos, and Landorus-T, and Garchomp (Not really a check even though it can threaten Dragonite - it can't OHKO Dragonite through Multiscale unless it gets incredibly lucky with Scale Shot and dies to +2 DWB after a Defence drop from Scale Shot. Defensive variants can fish for Toxic but it's still a dicey game to play even without the threat of Ice Punch.). Roost allows Dragonite to repeatably switch in to Pokemon like Kartana and Urshifu-R while also working well in conjunction with Multiscale. 160 Speed EVs are mainly used to allow Dragonite to outspeed utility Tornadus-T at +1 as well as Adamant Weavile, non-Scarf Kartana, and Blacephalon. 248 HP and 68 Defense EVs allow Dragonite to tank an unboosted Ice Shard from Jolly Weavile after Stealth Rock, whereas the HP and 8 SpD Special Defense EVs prevent it from getting 2HKOed by Shadow Ball from Choice Specs Blacephalon. Dragonite heavily appreciates entry hazard setters, as they wear down Pokemon that check it like Slowbro and Unaware Clefable (Tapu Fini would be a better example, Dragonite isn't really ever beating Unaware Clefable unless you get 3 layers of Spikes and Stealth Rock up) and allow it to obtain more KOs. Ferrothorn is an incredible teammate for Dragonite, as Ferrothorn struggles with Fire-types like Blacephalon, Blaziken, and Volcarona as well as Urshifu-R, which Dragonite can check, though it should be wary of Ice Punch from Urshifu-R. In return, Ferrothorn can switch in to Pokemon like Tapu Lele, Tapu Fini, and Weavile as well as function as a Knock Off absorber. Clefable can absorb Knock Off and Toxic, grant general support with utility moves like Knock Off, Stealth Rock, and Thunder Wave (mention Aromatherapy), and also function as a check to Weavile (mention Dragapult here for specially defensive sets). Landorus-T is appreciated for its Defog support in addition to other great utility moves in Knock Off and Toxic (I honestly see Landorus-T used as a Stealth Rock setter more than a Defogger on Dragonite teams). Wallbreakers such as Tapu Koko, Melmetal, and Weavile (Tapu Koko is not a wallbreaker, it's an offensive pivot. I think you should rewrite this section into how wallbreakers like Weavile/Melmetal/Choice Specs Tapu Lele can break through defensive cores to open up the game for Dragonite later on, and how offensive pivots like Tapu Koko/Victini synergise with Dragonite by threatening Dragonite's checks and providing pivoting support to bring it in safely.) appreciate Dragonite's utility against foes like Rillaboom, Landorus-T, and Kartana; in return, Tapu Koko can easily threaten Slowbro, Corviknight, and Skarmory, which all can easily wall Dragonite. Melmetal is able to threaten Clefable and Corviknight. Extreme Speed is an option on Dragon Dance sets to outspeed Weavile's Ice Shard and OHKO it at +2 on offensive Dragonite sets, though there aren't many other benefits to it. (Mention items other than Heavy-Duty Boots, e.g. Red Card for DD variants on offensive teams, see this for details)

Checks and Counters
===================

**Weavile**: Weavile is the single greatest offensive threat to Dragonite, as the second and third hits of Triple Axel ignore Multiscale, and are able to OHKO any Dragonite set. Jolly Weavile also outspeeds bulky Dragonite at +1 Speed, making it quite difficult to sweep. (Rewrite this as 'Ice-types and Ice-type coverage' and mention how Pokemon like Slowbro, Galarian Slowking, and Buzzwole run Ice coverage to hit Dragonite)

**Knock Off**: Knock Off users like Tornadus-T, Landorus-T, and Clefable (This interaction doesn't really exist, why is Dragonite staying in on Clefable unless it's in range? Kartana is much more relevant here.) rid Dragonite of its Heavy-Duty Boots, making Multiscale useless if Stealth Rock is up.

**Status**: Poison and burn from Pokemon such as Toxapex, Slowbro, and Rotom-W are quite detrimental status effects for Dragon Dance Dragonite sets, as both remove the effects of Multiscale and can quickly deter it wear it down. (I actually don't love Slowbro as a Dragonite check because Bulky DD beats Scald variants in a 1v1. I think Fairy-types is better here because Tapu Fini does actually beat Dragonite quite reliably while others like Tapu Lele and Tapu Koko can threaten Dragonite with their Fairy STAB.)

**Bulky Steel-types**: Ferrothorn, Corviknight, and Skarmory all wall Dragonite due to their massive Defense stat, and can easily use Leech Seed and Roost respectively to stay healthy throughout the course of the battle. (mention how their typings help with neutralising Dragonite's coverage and how ID Press helps the birds match boosts with Dragonite)

(mention faster threats, e.g. Nidoking, Hydreigon, Dragapult)

Ferrothorn is an incredible teammate for Dragonite, as Ferrothorn struggles with Fire-types like Blacephalon, Blaziken, and Volcarona as well as Urshifu-R (bit of a complex relationship as Urshifu-R needs to be banded to OHKO Ferrothorn with CC, otherwise it gets OHKOed back with Power Whip after the defence drop), which Dragonite can check, though it should be wary of Ice Punch from Urshifu-R. In return, Ferrothorn can switch in to Pokemon like Tapu Lele, Tapu Fini, and Weavile as well as function as a Knock Off absorber (list out examples, e.g. Clefable, opposing Ferrothorn, etc). Clefable can absorb Knock Off and Toxic, grant general support with utility moves like Knock Off, Stealth Rock, Thunder Wave, and Aromatherapy, and also function as a check to Weavile and Choice Specs Dragapult for specially defensive sets (ended up looking a bit clunky so delete it). Landorus-T is appreciated for its Stealth Rock support in addition to other great utility moves in Knock Off and Toxic (Defog is also really nice for Dragonite since there will be gamestates where it eats a Knock Off). Wallbreakers like Weavile, Melmetal, and Choice Specs Tapu Lele are appreciated for their ability to break through defensive cores for Dragonite, giving it a much easier time sweeping. Tapu Koko and Victini make good partners, as they can threaten Corviknight and Skarmory while also being able to bring Dragonite it much more easily with Volt Switch and U-turn, respectively.

Fire Punch can be used on Dragon Dance sets to threaten Ferrothorn, Corviknight, and Skarmory, though Dragonite doesn't appreciate dropping any of its coverage moves or Roost. Defog can be used on utility Dragonite sets over Heal Bell to control entry hazards, but doing this means that it can't function as a status switch-in or cure teammates of their status in addition to the fact that its a subpar Defogger, as it doesn't like being burned or poisoned, and it appreciates its Heavy-Duty Boots. Extreme Speed is an option on Dragon Dance sets to outspeed Weavile's Ice Shard and OHKO it at +2 on offensive Dragonite sets, though there aren't many other benefits to it. Red Card is a decent alternatively to Heavy-Duty Boots on Dragon Dance sets, as it can force out defensive checks like Clefable (also mention offense matchups where it can phaze out strong attackers like Dragapult and Tapu Lele to potentially gain extra setup turns), though this means that Dragonite is forced to take Stealth Rock chip damage.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Ice-types and Ice-type Coverage**: Weavile is the single greatest offensive threat to Dragonite, as the second and third hits of Triple Axel ignore Multiscale, and are able to OHKO any Dragonite set. Jolly Weavile also outspeeds bulky Dragonite at +1 Speed, making it quite difficult to sweep.

**Fairy-types**: Defensive Fairy-types like Clefable and Tapu Fini can somewhat easily take hits from Dragonite and hit it super effectively with Moonblast, whereas Tapu Fini can also burn it with Scald. Offensive Fairy-types like Tapu Koko and Tapu Lele can threaten Dragonite with Dazzling Gleam and Moonblast, respectively.

**Bulky Steel-types**: Ferrothorn, Corviknight, and Skarmory all wall Dragonite due to their massive Defense stat, and can easily use Leech Seed and Roost, respectively, to stay healthy throughout the course of the battle. Their Steel typing also nullifies their weakness to Ice Punch, making it difficult for Dragonite to break through them. Corviknight and Skarmory can use Iron Defense to match Dragonite's attack boosts, making them nearly impossible to KO.

**Faster Threats**: Dragapult, Hydreigon, and Nidoking all outspeed Dragonite if it is at +0 Speed. Dragapult and Hydreigon can threaten Dragonite with Draco Meteor, whereas Nidoking can threaten it with Ice Beam.

Great job, only have a couple of fluff removals/tweaks/questions. Let me know if you have questions!

=========

Thanks to its incredible Attack, access to Dragon Dance and Roost, and decent bulk aided by Multiscale, Dragonite functions as a sweeper while also checking Pokemon like Kartana, Rillaboom, and Blaziken. Dragon Dance improves Dragonite's Attack and Speed, enabling it to sweep opposing teams (RP) this Dragon Dance sentence is pretty obvious on its face. I think it can be removed in its entirety since it's pretty obvious why DDance is being run Earthquake provides a coverage option to hit Pokemon like Toxapex, Heatran, and Tyranitar. Dual Wingbeat is a STAB move that fluff deals solid damage to Urshifu-R, Rillaboom, and Blaziken, whereas Ice Punch hits would-be checks to Dragonite such as Zapdos and Landorus-T. Roost allows Dragonite to repeatably switch in to Pokemon like Kartana and Urshifu-R while also working well in conjunction with Multiscale. 160 Speed EVs are mainly used to allow Dragonite to outspeed utility Tornadus-T at +1 as well as Adamant Weavile, non-Scarf Kartana, and Blacephalon. are the latter 3 only outsped at +1 or are they outsped w/o a boost? if the latter, would add "unboosted" at the end to clarify 248 HP and 68 Defense EVs allow Dragonite to tank an unboosted Ice Shard from Jolly Weavile after Stealth Rock, whereas the 8 Special Defense EVs prevent it from getting 2HKOed by Shadow Ball from Choice Specs Blacephalon. The rest of the EVs are put into Attack to improve Dragonite's offensive capabilities, allowing Dragonite to 2HKO targets like Utility Tornadus-T at +1.

Fire Punch can be used on Dragon Dance sets to threaten Ferrothorn, Corviknight, and Skarmory, though Dragonite doesn't appreciate dropping any of its coverage moves or Roost. Defog can be used on utility Dragonite sets over Heal Bell maybe a change to discuss with QC but it is a bit weird to discuss an alternative to heal bell without discussing heal bell at all beforehand, barring the cursory mention in the overview to control entry hazards but doing this means that it can't function as a status switch-in or cure teammates of their status. (AP) This is in addition to the fact that its it's a subpar Defogger, as it doesn't like being burned or poisoned, and it appreciates its Heavy-Duty Boots.
