Bunches of questions. Competitive battling rules, battling help, etc.

So I was wondering if there was SOMEWHAT of a set set of rules?

The last competition of GameStop and the one before it (or what I think is the one before it?) was JAA. And they seemed to have completely different rules?

I wanted to know what the general rules are with battling are.

Also, what is the proper way in constructing a team of 6? (single battle).

Isn't it like.. get 2 sweepers, a wall, etc.

And, what is the proper way in making a doubles team?

Thanks a lot for your time.

well general(or standard) rules are:
sleep clause
DT/Evasion clause
no item clause
specie clause
no ubers
no OHKO moves

Im pretty sure those are "general rules"
correct me if im wrong

No item clause? Does that mean no hold items? Cause don't people usually always use hold items? Or does that mean no using 2 of the same hold item?

You're not wrong, just here to add that Item Clause is preferred by some players and tournaments, but it's not a must.

Rules are generally set by whatever place you go...here on Smogon, you can find the "standard" rules in the Battle Me thread in the Wifi forum. Gamestop had a different set of rules per Gamestop. etc.

There's no real template for creating teams, but I suggest you read all the announcements and sticky threads in the RMT forum. That should help you on your way.

It really depends on the team, some are Choice Banded teams, some are Choice Specs teams. There are also the defensive teams, the all-sweep teams, etc. So an actual template of a team would be innacurate.

Hm. Well is there a template that could be used by a noob to start off with?

Something I could just base off of? I remember vaguely there being something like always wanting to have 2 sweepers, a wall, a sleeper, etc.

But that was just me following off the Smogon guides that used to be up.

Well, if you really want a template, you might want to start with some basic Pokemon combinations, such as Gyarados and Electivire or Tangrowth and Heatran. There really isn't anything at all that dictates the exact amount of Pokemon of each role one should have on a team.

I'm a new battler myself, but if you need some help getting started, the discussion forum, analysis index, and some (emphasize some, since these days...) RMT's by tried and true smogonites can help.

A template isn't necessary, as there'd be a unique template for each team. My best advice is to just gain experience, try to find unique and effective combinations, make sure your team fits and works well together (aka do not combine a Trick Room team with many fast Choice Scarfers...)

Some of the common threats of DP OU singles include Salamence, Blissey, Gyarados w/ or w/out Electivire, Heracross, Weaville, and others, relating to one important rule to new trainers; try not to allow free switch-ins. This is what makes all the above (save Blissey) so dangerous; one free switch, one free Swords Dance or Dragon Dance...Personally, I think my Jumpluff is my MVP since she can Memento, disabling her opponent and almost forces that vital free switch, allowing a swift setupper like Charizard to sweep.

Meh, that's just a few scenarios. Remember the old saying that time and experience are the best teachers (if you don't die before you understand)...It's true, however. Good luck.
