Butterfree uses a deadly combination of Quiver Dance and a Compound Eyes boosted Sleep Powder to setup on Pokemon like Cofagrigus, Clefairy, and Gurdurr. Nonetheless, this strategy can be unreliable with the limited scope of slower, vulnerable targets and the considerable amount of Electric- and Steel-types that revenge kill and stomach Butterfree even at +1. Adding to the unreliability is Butterfree’s poor bulk and mediocre Speed, allowing Ice Shard Piloswine and Abomasnow and Choice Scarf Toxicroak and Togedemaru to easily revenge kill it. Substitute secures set up opportunities against sleeping targets or walls like Clefairy and Eldegoss that rely on status moves to deter it, and protects it from revenge killers. Heavy-Duty Boots prevents Butterfree from taking Stealth Rock damage so that it can secure set up opportunities when coming in at full HP. Leftovers instead is worthwhile for recovering behind a Substitute, but it requires extensive anti-entry hazard support. Tinted Lens with Air Slash and / or Bug Buzz is a stronger alternative against some targets like Rotom, Lanturn, and Klinklang, but makes setting up with the less-accurate Sleep Powder shaky in comparison.

Butterfree needs teammates that support it early- to mid-game that weaken or take care of its multiple checks so that it has a good chance to sweep. Ground-types like Sandaconda and Piloswine help check Electric- and Steel-types like Togedemaru, Lanturn, Galarian Stunfisk, and Silvally-Steel so Butterfree’s Hurricane can sweep unresisted, and in particular Butterfree targets Eldegoss and Gourgeist-S for them in return. Physical sweepers like Silvally-Dark and Klinklang appreciate Butterfree for targeting the aforementioned threats as well as physical walls like Cofagrigus and Gurdurr and Choice-locked attackers like Sawk and Toxicroak, as Butterfree’s Fighting resistance and special prowess is great for these situations. Walls like Ferroseed and Garbodor check Choice Scarf users like Togedemaru and Sawk that try and revenge kill Butterfree. Abomasnow makes an excellent partner for not only targeting Lanturn and Piloswine for Butterfree, but also for setting Aurora Veil for it to facilitate its sweeping capabilities. If Butterfree opts for Leftovers, then anti-entry hazard teammates like Hattrem, Rotom, and Rotom-F are near mandatory so that Butterfree's sweep is not jeopardized by Stealth Rock damage.

(tbh it's not even just limited to revenge killing; being able to take multiple Hurricanes is annoying for Butterfree too. also give some examples) Adding to the unreliability is Butterfree’s poor bulk and mediocre Speed, allowing Ice Shard Piloswine and Abomasnow and Choice Scarf Toxicroak and Togedemaru to easily revenge kill it. Substitute secures set up opportunities against sleeping targets or walls like Clefairy and Eldegoss that rely on status moves to deter it. (helps prevent revenge killing too) Heavy-Duty Boots prevents Butterfree from taking Stealth Rock damage, allowing it to use Substitute twice as many times and not be as vulnerable to priority. (this misses the mark on why Boots is a great item I feel. It's mostly just the first point about preventing Stealth Rock damage; the other two I feel are irrelevant because Ice Shards and Sucker Punches are fucking on Butterfree 9/10 times regardless) Tinted Lens with Air Slash and / or Bug Buzz is a stronger alternative against some targets like Rotom, Lanturn, and Klinklang, but makes setting up with the less-accurate Sleep Powder shaky in comparison. (I haven't used Tinted Lens at all, so I can't speak to its viability or usefulness, but Leftovers as an alternative item choice is worth a slash. It's great on teams with multiple forms of hazard control, i.e. Hattrem + a Defogger, and makes repetitive Substitute uses less punishing)

Physical sweepers like Silvally-Dark and Klinklang appreciate Butterfree for targeting the aforementioned threats as well as physical walls like Cofagrigus and Gurdurr, as Butterfree’s Fighting resistance and special prowess is great for these situations. (I'd also mention that Butterfree appreciates being able to take advantage of Choice-locked Fighting-types for these Pokemon; setting up on Sawk locked into Close Combat is really fun) Walls like Ferroseed and Garbodor check Choice Scarf users like Togedemaru and Sawk that try and revenge kill Butterfree. Abomasnow makes an excellent partner for not only targeting Lanturn and Piloswine for Butterfree, but also for setting Aurora Veil for it to facilitate its sweeping capabilities. (forms of hazard removal for when running Leftovers, Hattrem should be one of the mentions I feel with other things like Rotom-F and Rotom being good to bring up too)
