  • Heatran has an excellent defensive typing, resisting common types such as Dragon and Steel. This, alongside good natural bulk, allows Heatran to easily set up Substitute. With the lack of abundant Fire-resistant Pokemon, Heatran behind Substitute becomes a formidable wincon by continuously chipping the opponent's team with its spread STAB attack, Heat Wave. All in all, its typing and being the only reliable Fire-type make Heatran a mainstay in the metagame.
  • Earth Power is only for opposing Heatran but can do reliable damage against Fire-resistant Pokemon, such as Tyranitar and Kingdra.
  • Heatran aims to set up Substitute as quickly as possible, protecting it from moves that can OHKO it, such as Latios's Hidden Power Ground and Landorus-T's Earthquake, while allowing it to freely chip the opponent's team with Heat Wave. With the lack of abundant Fire-resistant Pokemon, Heatran oftentimes can exert immense offensive pressure with its Heat Wave by forcing Protect and switches, allowing it to generate free opportunities to set up Substitute.
  • Heatran benefits greatly from Thundurus. In addition to Thundurus checking Water-types, its Prankster Thunder Wave can allow Heatran to outspeed threats, such as Latios, and set up Substitute while fishing for a full paralysis. Tyranitar is another excellent teammate due to its ability to check opposing Heatran, Thundurus; which can stop Heatran's Substitute with Taunt; Latios, and Cresselia. Heatran's Substitute can also stall for extra turns, allowing the sand damage to add up on the opposing team while Heatran recovers HP through Leftovers, thanks to its Steel typing. Amoonguss can facilitate Substitute with Spore or redirect super effective hits with Rage Powder. Finally, Latios and Cresselia both can threaten Fighting-types, Landorus-T, and opposing Heatran.

[SET COMMENTS]
  • Rather than acting as a wincon, this set makes use of Heatran's excellent typing and role as the only reliable Fire-type by turning it into an offensive attacker. This allows it to be played more aggressively to take advantage of the small number of Fire-resistant Pokemon in the metagame.
  • Shuca Berry allows Heatran to tank a Ground-type attack that would otherwise OHKO it, notably improving the matchup against Latios and opposing Heatran. Earth Power is mainly to hit opposing Heatran super effectively. Flash Cannon is a second STAB attack that does better damage against Kyurem-B, Latios, and Tyranitar.
  • Heatran can opt for more Speed if necessary. For example, 84 Speed EVs allow it to outrun Adamant Choice Scarf Landorus-T under Tailwind.
  • Generally, this set likes to take advantage of Heatran's typing to generate free attacking opportunities by safely switching into resisted attacks. For example, Heatran counters the common Steel-types, such as Metagross and Genesect, so it can be played aggressively by switching directly into them, giving Heatran a free Heat Wave chance.
  • Similarly to Substitute Heatran, Shuca Berry Heatran benefits greatly from Thundurus due to its speed control with Prankster Thunder Wave and its ability to check Water-types, such as Jellicent. Latios and Cresselia are also excellent teammates, as they can threaten Fighting-types, Landorus-T, and opposing Heatran while also having access to speed control. Since this set is worse against rain, Heatran appreciates teammates that can deter Kingdra, such as Jellicent. Finally, Tyranitar benefits from Heatran's ability to remove Steel-types and Amoonguss, and it can deter rain with Sand Stream and threaten opposing Jellicent, Latios, Cresselia, and Heatran.
  • On dedicated Trick Room teams, Heatran can be used as a strong wallbreaker with an EV spread of 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA, a Quiet nature, 0 Speed IVs, Fire Gem or Charcoal for the item, and a moveset of Eruption, Earth Power, Heat Wave, and Protect.

  • An excellent typing alongside being the only reliable Fire-type makes Heatran a mainstay in the metagame. feels insufficient as a lede. you talk a lot about later on about how it's strong with sub and wants to use it as much as possible. you even mention how SubTran is a wincon in Set 2, Bullet 1, but you never actually spell that one out here. Be more clear about how being a Fire-type with longevity makes it great as a wincon.
  • Thanks to its typing, Heatran can easily set up Substitute, allowing it to be an annoyance and continuously chip the opponent with its spread STAB attack, Heat Wave. Earth Power is only for opposing Heatran but can do reliable damage against Fire resists, such as Tyranitar and Kingdra.
  • Heatran aims to set up Substitute as quick as possible, protecting it from threats that can OHKO it, such as Latios's Hidden Power Ground and Landorus-T's Earthquake. Due to the lack of abundant Fire resists, a Heatran behind Substitute can win games just through continuously chipping the opponent with Heat Wave.
  • Heatran benefits greatly from Thundurus. In addition to Thundurus's ability to check Water-types, Prankster Thunder Wave can allow Heatran to outspeed threats, such as Latios, and set up Substitute while fishing for a full-paralysis. Tyranitar is another excellent teammate due to its ability to check opposing Heatran, Thundurus, which can stop Heatran's Substitute with Taunt, Latios, and Cresselia. Substitute can also stall for extra turns, allowing the residual damage from sand to add up on the opposing team. Also mention that Heatran also recovers HP thanks to the steel-typing in this scenario, actually matters a lot for why it's so hard to kill in sand goodstuffs. Amoonguss can facilitate Substitute with Spore or redirect super-effective hits with Rage Powder. Finally, Latios and Cresselia both can threaten Fighting-types, Landorus-T, and opposing Heatran.

  • Rather than acting as a win-condition, this set makes use of Heatran's role as the only reliable Fire-type by turning it into an offensive attacker, allowing it to threaten Amoonguss and the plethora of Steel-types in the metagame. This isn't point isn't unique to this set as the Sub set can still threaten amoong and steels just fine. Instead, highlight how ShucaTran essentially lets it be played much more aggressively to get value in positions it otherwise wouldnt be able to.
  • Shuca Berry allows Heatran to tank a Ground-type attack that would otherwise OHKO it, notably improving the Heatran and Latios matchup. Be clear that you are talking about the mirror here. Flash Cannon is a second STAB attack that does better damage against Kyurem-B, Latios, and Tyranitar.
  • Heatran can opt for more Speed if necessary. For example, 84 Speed EVs can allow it to outrun Adamant Choice Scarf Landorus-T under Tailwind.
  • This set aims to do as much damage as possible. Since Heatran counters the common Steel-types, such as Metagross and Genesect, it is best to preserve it until those threats are moved. First point and second point here aren't really related, could move first somewhere else and build up second a bit more. Would also rephrase it a bit to say you can play Heatran aggressively into them for free attacking opportunities; it's also true that preserving Heatran to beat those threats is useful, but saying it's generally better to preserve Heatran for them isn't something I agree with as being able to be proactive against other stuff is this set's particular strength over Sub.
  • Moreso than the Substitute set, Offensive Heatran requires speed control since it does not have the luxury of using Substitute to tank a super-effective hit. Lack of Substitute also makes the rain matchup much worse so Pokemon that can deter Kingdra, such as Thundurus and Latios, are excellent teammates. Generally though, the same teammates that work with the Substitute set would work well with this set. Wouldn't necessarily say this needs speed control more than Sub, as Shuca does give some leeway. More importantly, though, you need to reference the other set less and essentially write about this set independently. Inclusive of this is actually mentioning the "same teammates" here specifically. This is because sets in analyses are presented in a way that people can read them independently from the other sets, as we can expect that some people will only really go to the sets they're actually interested in.
  • On dedicated Trick Room teams, Heatran can be used a strong wallbreaker with a spread of 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA, a Quiet nature, 0 Speed IVs, Fire Gem for the item, and a moveset of Eruption, Earth Power, Heat Wave. Charcoal also works

On the Sub set, I think it would be good to explicitly mention both the ways of how Heatran is actually able to put itself into the position of getting a substitute up.

You're absolutely correct in that it does so defensively, and I believe you imply this to some extent with the "...lack of abundant fire resists..." part, but enhancing the point about offensive pressure also allowing it to set Sub up instead of actually attacking would help people learning the tier think about it in both ways more, as it may not necessarily be as obvious as it needs to be.

excellent work
