Hello, I'm Cactrune, and this is my second posted RMT. You may remember me from my Rain Offense team, which I can no longer use because Jirachi and Celebi are OU now. However, we got a lot of new 'mons this month as well, and this team attempts to deal with some of them while harnessing their power as well. I managed to get up to about 1520 on the ladder with this team, but I haven't been able to consistently maintain high rankings with it (right now I'm at 1414). So I took this team here so that people could critique it and hopefully help me hold my own in the upper reaches of the ladder. Since I brought the team to the forums, I've gotten a great amount of help from a bunch of cool people, and it's helped me improve the team. I got some great suggestions to make the team more offensively inclined, but I'm showing the more defensively inclined retooling here. Changes in red.
Aerodactyl @ Aerodactylite
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 40 HP / 252 Atk / 216 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Roost
- Stone Edge
- Aerial Ace
Mega Aerodactyl is one of the best megas in the tier. Its ability to check a multitude of the metagame's most powerful Pokemon is invaluable to this team, and it always ends up being useful to some extent in a given match. I'm running a pretty basic, somewhat bulky set, with Aqua Tail to hit Ground-Types like the Nidos and Gligar.
Heracross @ Choice Band
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Megahorn
- Knock Off
- Earthquake
The man himself is back in UU, and I couldn't wait to use him. Heracross punches holes in the opponent's team like nobody's business, and acts as the team's wallbreaker thanks to its strength and coverage. With good prediction, I can usually pivot into Heracross safely, do damage, and then withdraw. Definitely a solid member of the team.
Vaporeon @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 248 HP / 112 Def / 148 SpD
Calm Nature
- Scald
- Wish
- Protect
- Baton Pass
Vaporeon acts as one of the vital defensive Pokemon on this team. It exists to heal Pokemon and act as a pivot, using Baton Pass to give the team's more offensive Pokemon free switches and sometimes passing them Wishes at the same time. I'm experimenting with the EVs right now, but I'm currently running this spread to deal with the Nidos more easily.
Gligar @ Eviolite
Ability: Immunity
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Roost
Gligar is the other half of this defensive core, and it works very well as Vaporeon's teammate. He eats hits like nobody's business, which allows him to set hazards very easily and support the team. His ability to check a wide variety of physical attackers makes him a vital team member.
Forretress @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Spikes
- Rapid Spin
- Gyro Ball
- Volt Switch
The newest member of the team, Forretress was added to free up some moveslots in my team. My team previously lacked hazard-stackers, and swapping Stealth Rock for Defog on Gligar remedies this. Forretress is a great glue mon with a lot of capabilities, one of the most important of which being his slow Volt Switch. He's also a hazard remover and a prime check to some of the tier's top threats. 10/10 would add again.
Snorlax @ Leftovers
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 144 HP / 188 Def / 176 SpD
Careful Nature
- Curse
- Body Slam
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
Finally, we reach the Pokemon designated as my late-game sweeper. I added the standard CurseLax to this team after realizing that I lacked a late-game sweeper, and since my team's weaknesses were already balanced out, I added this Normal-type. I initially questioned the intelligence of this decision, but Snorlax has proven me wrong, and it serves as not only a late-game win condition, but also as a special wall and Fire-spam check. Definitely a quality Pokemon that I'll use more in the future.
The Team As A Whole
Overall, I would be willing to consider this team one of the most successful ones that I've put together. It's got a good structure, and I especially like the Mega Aerodactyl + Heracross duo. Thanks to some improvements, I've managed to change this team up a great deal, converting it into a more interesting build. It's also possible to make this team more offensively inclined, and I'll add the suggestions of other users that gave me this idea below. Overall, this team was a joy to make and use.
Importable:
Past Members:
Rotom-Heat @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Overheat
- Volt Switch
- Will-O-Wisp
- Pain Split
Originally added because I wanted a Flying resist, Rotom-Heat was removed from the squad because of his waste of a slot. He wasn't really doing much to help the team, and his function as a Volt-Switcher is much better served by Forretress.
Potential Members:
Nidoqueen @ Black Sludge
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earth Power
- Sludge Wave
- Roar/Ice Beam/Fire Blast
Nidoqueen is an incredible Pokemon that would replace Gligar on the more offensive build of my team. Gligar's Defogging role would be filled by Mega Aerodactyl as Nidoqueen would take the center stage as Stealth Rocker. It's got good coverage and power, and as such can hit far harder than Gligar. However, it's lack of staying power makes it a lot harder to use, especially because its role as a defensive Pokemon would require it to switch in to a lot of hits. Because it's easy to wear down, I haven't added it to the team.
Hydreigon @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Mild Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Superpower
- Roost
- Dark Pulse
Hydreigon is a top-notch wallbreaker, and Mixed Hydreigon is the best wallbreaking set to use for it. It takes lots of Hydra's checks by surprise by forcing them to take a Superpower after a Draco Meteor, and it's great for beating walls like Blissey and Empoleon. It was suggested that I use this over Rotom-Heat, but Forretress is far more essential right now. I've been toying with more offensive builds and I might still switch to one eventually.
