Raging Bolt @ Leftovers
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Fairy / Steel
EVs: 252 HP / 188 Def / 68 SpA
Modest Nature
IVs: 20 Atk
- Thunderclap
- Dragon Pulse
- Calm Mind
- Protect

[OVERVIEW]

Raging Bolt is able to leverage its good natural bulk, along with a great Special Attack stat to become one of the metagame's most threatening setup sweepers with an excellent STAB combination that allows it to hit much of the tier for respectable damage.

[SET COMMENTS]

Thunderclap lets Raging Bolt circumvent its mediocre Speed to get the jump on offensive threats that would force it out, such as Chien-Pao and Ninetales-A, and nab revenge KOs on weakened foes
Dragon Pulse threatens common Dragon types such as Dragonite, Baxcalibur and Gouging Fire, the last two of which are Electric resists while dealing neutral damage to most of the metagame.
Calm Mind boosts Raging Bolt's already high Special Attack stat while patching up its mediocre Special Defence stat, letting it function as a dangerous win condition that can quickly snowball out of control if left unchecked.
Leftovers gives Raging Bolt more staying power as the passive recovery it provides in addition to the stat boosts from Calm Mind make it harder to KO and helps to negate any chip damage it may receive.
Tera Fairy offers Raging Bolt a useful immunity to the Dragon type moves that normally threaten it, which allows it to completely flip the matchup against Regidrago, who would otherwise pose a big obstacle. It also gives Raging Bolt a more neutral type matchup across the board, which helps aid it in it's role as a bulky set up sweeper. Tera Grass provides Raging Bolt a resistance to Ground type moves, which helps it matchup better into Landorus and Ursaluna-Bloodmoon as well as a useful immunity to spore, rage powder and sleep powder.
• The EV spread allows Raging Bolt to survive a Life Orb Ice Spinner from Chien-Pao and +2 Kowtow Cleave from Kingambit.
Raging Bolt pairs well with Pokemon that make opportunities for setting up Calm Minds easier, such as Fake Out users Like Rillaboom, Incineroar, and Iron Hands as well as redirection support from the likes of Ogerpon-W and Amoonguss. Raging Bolt also pairs well with Landorus-I who can beat the Steel and Fairy types such as Kingambit and Diancie that Raging Bolt struggles with, conversely Raging Bolt is strong against the Flying types that can freely switch in on Landours-I's Ground-type STAB and the Water types such as Ogerpon-W that offensively threaten it. Raging Bolt also pairs well with Sinistcha as it provides additional longevity with its ability Hospitality as well as helping to cover for its ground type weakness with Rage Powder redirection.

  • Dragon Pulse section should probably mention hitting the grasses and Lando I, which thunderclap doesn't hit. Probably should also be mentioned as the main way of hitting targets that aren't attacking. Overall just emphasize its use in covering for the weaknesses of Thunderclap as a primary damage dealing option.
  • I would not say Bolt's spdef stat is mediocre (definitely not in conjunction with its hp stat), maybe just rephrase to something like "increasing its special bulk"
  • I'd probably mention Tera Fairy first as it's the most common tera type on it, maybe also mention in particularly Regidrago for it and granting generally neutral type matchups across the board. I think Tera steel has generally fallen out of favor, might want to mention grass instead? That's a bigger change that's maybe not necessary to change, what you have for tera steel is fine in that case.
  • In the context of the more current DOU metagame I think Sinistcha is also really worth mentioning in the partners section for providing additional longevity and helping cover for Bolt's ground weakness. Really like the rest of the partners section!
Really good stuff here imo, the only stuff here is mainly a function of the analysis being written a year ago (oops)- just update a few things and it'll be great!

Thunderclap lets Raging Bolt circumvent its mediocre Speed to get the jump on offensive threats that would force it out, such as Chien-Pao and Ninetales-A, and nab revenge KOs on weakened foes (I wouldn't mention Ninetales-A which does 30% after a calm mind) (I would put in the set Thunderbolt that has been used quite a bit with the advantages of not worrying about redirection or Gholdengo nasty plotting in front of Raging Bolt)
(I would also mention that Raging Bolt typing is great against the most common physical attackers of the tier, Ogerpon-W, Ogerpon-H and Rillaboom)
Leftovers gives Raging Bolt more staying power as the passive recovery it provides in addition to the stat boosts from Calm Mind make it harder to KO and helps to negate any chip damage it may receive.

Raging Bolt also pairs well with Landorus-I who can beat the Steel and Fairy types such as Kingambit, Diancie and Gholdengo that Raging Bolt struggles with, conversely Raging Bolt is strong against the Flying types that can freely switch in on Landours-I's (it's just Landorus) Ground-type STAB and the Water types such as Ogerpon-W that offensively threaten it. (I think in the relationship between Raging Bolt and Landorus it's more important the fact that Raging Bolt can switch into Rillaboom's Wood Hammer and Ivy Cudgel from Wellspring) important that Raging Bolt also pairs well with Sinistcha as it provides additional longevity with its ability Hospitality as well as helping to cover for its ground type weakness with Rage Powder redirection.

I have some doubts about the spread too, because a Raging Bolt without Thunder Clap and with Thunderbolt doesn't really need the Sp. Atk but it's fine like this too probably, QC 2/2 after we decide for the spread.
Good work btw c:
