What is CAPmono? It's a small OM based on the Create-A-Pokemon Project, which adds 28 new pokemon to the existing Monotype Metagame! These new additions offer unique typings, abilities, and offensive and defensive utility that many Mono teams otherwise don't have, opening up a lot of interesting teambuilding possibilities. CAPMono follows the existing Monotype Banlist, with the addition of Cawmodore(banned).

Thread Rules & Etiquette
  • This thread will serve as a place to house all the resources listed below: Viability Rankings, Sample Teams, Speed Tiers, and other useful resources to come. On top of this, the thread will act as a discussion thread as well.
  • Posts only relating to the CAPMonotype OM is allowed in this thread.
  • General Smogon & CAP forum rules apply to this thread so please follow them.
CAP Monotype Council:
PM any of the council members if you have any questions about the tier!

Tiering History
Blaziken - Blaziken’s powerful ability speed boost an already good attack stat that can be boosted with sword dance to easily run through teams once it gains momentum. Blaziken also has great team support on both types having access to screens and teammates who are able to wither down the opposing team for Blaziken to late game sweep. Overall due to the lack of valid defensive counters on most teams and great teammate support it has been banned. Blaziken also follows the existing Monotype banlist and we plan to continue to use the tiering philosophy as a guide for the tier.

Cawmodore - Cawmodore has Volt Absorb as a Flying/Steel typing and the main sign of it being unhealthy is Belly Drum and its incredible bulk to add onto it. Facade counters Pokemon that may try to Scald it, Bullet Punch revenges faster threats, and Drain Punch gives Cawmodore longevity as a bulky and effective belly drum sweeper.

Kartana - Kartana offers way too much to steel and its incredible wall breaking potential with either Choice Band or Swords Dance breaks entirely way too many types with addition to its amazing coverage. It is also banned in SS Monotype and we chose to follow that here.

Magearna - Magearna's great coverage with Stored Power, Draining Kiss, Focus Blast, Ice Beam, and Thunderbolt makes it somewhat unexpected to prep for along with boosting its SpA for every kill it gets. It is also banned in SS Monotype and we chose to follow that here.

Welcome to the CAP Monotype Viability Rankings! In Monotype, Pokemon are ranked based upon how viable they are relative to the other Pokemon you have available on a particular type. The Pokemon in A rank are more viable than those in B rank, but that does not mean B rank Pokemon aren't useful or have a valuable niche. Anything that is ranked must be usable and have some value that prevents it from being outclassed. Most Pokemon are placed into one of five different rankings: S, A, B, C, and D. Some Pokemon aren’t listed either because they are either completely outclassed or haven't been ranked yet. Pokemon are ranked separately for each type. Pokemon are ranked separately for each type. For example, Water teams (stall specifically) love having access to Lanturn's Volt Absorb to provide an extra Electric immunity, but Electric teams have limited interest in Lanturn because there are no needs/superior options for its niche; therefore Lanturn would be ranked separately for each type.

General / Write up Rules
  • Flaming will not be tolerated. Please respectfully debate each other's nominations.
  • Post smartly, don't just be like, "I like Miasmite, so it should be in S Tier!"
  • Include the Pokemon you're rating, the type, and what rank you want it to be.
  • Provide an explanation as to why you put it in that rank and how it fares in Monotype. (Why should it be ranked lower or higher?)
  • Please only nominate rank changes for Pokemon that you have direct experience using. Do not use theory or on-paper ideas.
Viability Ranking Council: These people will have the final say if a decision by the community cannot be reached or a Pokemon is completely misplaced. If you have any questions or need help, please PM / VM these people.

How to rank
  • Include the Pokemon you're rating, the type, and what rank you want it to be.
  • Provide an explanation as to why you put it in that rank and how it fares in Monotype. (Why should it be ranked lower or higher?)

so fighting has been doing pretty well rn and ive been playing around with it, so Im gonna give my two cents on the fighting vr
Fighting
A -> B

Ok so I'm gonna start with this guy. This isn't really showing how bad Urshifu-S is, but moreso how good Voodoom is for Fighting. Voodoom is already S tier, which I find very reasonable. It's electric immunity via Lightning Rod makes it so much better than Urshifu-S. In this replay, Voodoom is able to put on a lot of pressure on the defensive volt switch backbone of Fetixe's electric. https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen8cap-1252519826
Do note that that fetixe did missplay by sacking koko to doom and was not focus blast raichu-a. I don't only want to talk about this mu, because this is not the one thing that holds fighting back in the regular monotype metagame, so I'm also going to note how in the multiple replays we have in the server from the cap tours at monotype events, Voodoom was always used over urshifu here here here and here. All in all, I just feel like myself and the majority of the community find Voodoom so much better than urshifu, and since they fight for the same team spot as a psychic immunity(you could run both), they can not both be in an extremely high tier.

Fighting
S -> A

Ok so I know i just referenced usage, and although keldeo has been on every fighting team I've seen, I wonder why no one has been using Urshifu-Rapid-Strike. Especially since Urshifu-Single-Strike is not necessary anymore. While I have no replays to show Urshifu-R's potential, I don't think it's worse than keldeo. It ignores protect, has a 75 bp move(all three hits) that crits every time, and has an extremely potent Bulk up set. I am not ready to say that any one of them is better, and due to Keldeo's much higher usage and speed tier, I think Keldeo should remain 1 spot above Urshifu-R but Keld is definitely not a necessary pick.

Fighting
UR -> B

see above

Fighting
A -> S

Its about damn time. I'd say Kerfluffle is the big game changer for CAP Fighting. Its insanely fast, absorbs status for the team, gets some good support moves like Parting Shot, Wish, and Yawn and has a fairy typing. It is very safe to say that this is a staple pick, it's been on every fighting team in the cap replays channel. It's scarf set demolishes types like dark, other fighting teams, and is great speed control in general, allowing something like terrakion to run a sd set instead. Life Orb shits on popular defensive cores like grass, and dark. The fact that it's been made to be an offensive pivot is already a godsend to a type that is forced to run HO but has absolutely zero team support. I think it's pretty clear that this pillow is not just A tier.

I would do more but I've been mainly just playing around with fighting and using meme sets(roselia kerfluffle,yawn parting shot kerf,memento voodoom etc) so I'm going to leave it here for now. And since the cap mono startup tour has just begun, there will be a lot more replays to make healthy opinions on the metagame rn, cheers every1!

Dark
UR -> C or higher
Having tested out dark quite a bit now Revenankh is a massive threat to the type by spamming priority drain punch. Sableye is something a few of the council members have been testing out to help beat revenankh with its wide range of move sets options from Toxic, Recover, Will-O-Wisp, Encore, Knock Off, Taunt, and Foul Play. It also helps with the fighting mu, in general, being able to swap into super-effective fighting type moves and then crippling the opposing mon with Wisp and knock off. Dazzling Gleam is another option to hit Voodoom and Urshifu-S.

Ground
B -> A
I feel Seismitoad is superior to Gastrodon as it's able to beat Azumarill along with the Substitute set being able to constantly beat water. I can not see why Gastrodon is a higher rank than Seismitoad they should at least be the same rank while Gastrodon is bulkier and has access to Recover it does struggle to beat water compared to Seismitoad, I would dare say that's the reasons people run a water immunity on ground.

Kinda wanted to point out that regular Monotype has the items Damp Rock + Smooth Rock banned where as in CAP Mono it shows no items banned. Maybe that’s something to be taken cared of and mentioned before players continue using it on rain or sand teams for the cap monotype tour.

:blaziken: has been banned
The CAP mono council has decided to quick ban Blaziken from the tier, Due to Blaziken’s powerful ability speed boost an already good attack stat that can be boosted with sword dance to easily run through teams once it gains momentum.

Hello everyone the council will be doing updates next week loosely based on the Monotype vr that was recently updated. Along with discussions of a possible ban, feel free to post nominations, discuss the meta, or post suggestions for samples team this lets you voice your opinions to the council.
