This is very tl;dr I'm sure so be warned. I haven't done one of these in a long time and towards the end I got kind of lazy so I think the end could be improved but that's just me. Anyway, this battle happened the other day and I thought I'd tell everyone about it...

Carl vs husk

The epic tale.

It was a warm sunny Sunday afternoon. A cocky young trainer by the name of Carl was roaming around looking for a challenge. Suddenly, a cool breeze blew through the air and SMACK! The rugged trainer was hit square in the face by a small pink flier.

An RS OU Tournament has been initiated. Type “/join” to enter.

This was it! “Hmm at least this will give me something to do..” Carl thought with a yawn. He had already won the previous tournament held that day with relative ease. Turning around, he walked back toward Smogon University where the matches were to be held. Quickly registering in hope that a worthy opponent might be able to challenge him, young Carl took a seat inside the tournament dome’s reception area. “Pairings are in!” suddenly flashed across the large Jumbo-tron screen in the center of the lobby. “Well that was fast,” the hot shot trainer mumbled, “Might as well check to see what sap gets to lose to me first.”

Carl wandered over to the pairings booth among a mob of other formidable looking opponents including one of his archrivals known only to the battling world as “husk.” Glancing over and smiling, husk motioned toward Carl. “I hope he makes it to the finals,” Carl thought, “that way I can have a real challenge.” Little did he realize that his challenge would occur much sooner than he initially thought; the pairings revealed a round one match up against his rival! Without as much as a blink of an eye, Carl observed the name of his first round opponent, turned and walked off to the waiting room for battle field number 4. Within minutes, Carl found himself face to face with husk, a mere 50 yards between them, in front of a large crowd of fans.

The rules were repeated over the loudspeaker by the announcers. Carl wasn’t paying much attention as he had heard them all before. He was much more concerned with which of his 6 powerful pokemon to start off with.

Carl: HMM

Carl snapped out of his daze. Husk had already selected his pokeball and the line judge was motioning toward Carl indicating he should make his selection. He grabbed the first small red and white marble sized ball on his belt and pressed the single button with his middle finger causing the ball to expand to twice its size. Both trainers tossed their pokeballs toward the center of the field and the battle was underway.

husk vs Carl. Begin!
husk sent out Fatal Tragedy (Lv.100 Metagross)!
Carl sent out Zapdos (Lv.100 Zapdos)!

Carl’s legend of thunder squared off against the psychic and steel titan. This was short lived however as Carl was unwilling to risk any damage to his rare and precious Zapdos and husk recognized the offensive disadvantage of his Metagross. Carl turned to his trusty Swampert, a pokemon he has had since the beginning of his days as a trainer, while husk summoned the power of his legendary Regice. Swampert absorbed an Ice Beam for about a third of his health and retaliated by barfing up some Toxic substance onto Regice, badly poisoning the ice cube. Feeling that Regice still had the advantage, Carl forced his Swampert to retreat in favor of the special pink sponge Blissey in order to take another Ice Beam. Strategic switching then occurred by both sides, with the steel raven Skarmory making an appearance and placing a layer of Spikes on the field only to be met with Carl’s Zapdos once more. Zapdos deceptively made a decoy in the form of a Substitute while husk predicted a Thunderbolt and used Regice to absorb it. Zapdos passed the baton off to his dinosaur counterpart Tyranitar while Regice was taking a Rest. More strategic switching occurred. Husk’s Claydol and his own Tyranitar made an appearance in the limelight while his Skarmory once more set another layer of Spikes. Carl retaliated in each instance by going back to his Swampert and eventually by bringing out his own Skarmory. Husk turned to his own Zapdos to stop Carl’s Skarmory. Then things started to get interesting..

(Editor’s note: if you’re wondering why husk’s HP is showing and not mine it’s because I got the log from him. I forgot to save my version.)

Husk’s Zapdos was a special one in that it too vomited on other creatures in order to poison them! Zapdos and Blissey exchanged hits for a few turns, Blissey slowly losing health after Toxic hit the second time around and Zapdos taking some Seismic Tosses. With the effects of Toxic taking its toll, Carl is forced to recall Blissey in hope of activating its special ability, Natural Cure! Carl sent in Swampert hoping to absorb a Thunderbolt from Husk’s side for no damage and is met with a sleeping thunderbird instead. As can be expected, Carl exchanged back to Blissey and husk summoned his Tyranitar again. Tyranitar used Substitute, revealing it to be the nefarious creation of chaos and Jumpman16, or at least a long lost cousin of it….

Carl withdrew Blissey!
Carl sent out Zapdos (Lv.100 Zapdos)!

6-5 husk

“Oh shit!” Carl exclaimed. A long lost cousin indeed for the move Focus Punch had been revealed earlier. Husk chuckled a little and responded, “I’m a little smarter than your average trainer.” At this point in the match all Carl could hope for was that this fearsome Tyranitar lacked a special attack that could hit his trusty Skarmory. Sure enough, he was right and scared the T-rex out of play with a mighty Roar from his hunk of metal excuse for a bird. Despite scaring off that Tyranitar, in was still in husk’s arsenal and was a threat. Skarmory would not be able to take many more of those hard hitting Focus Punches. The roar only brought in husk’s Skarmory and the two faced off. Carl got in a layer of his own Spikes before being sent flying by a tornado like gust. The Whirlwind continued to fling Carl’s pokemon around the stadium, continuously knocking them into jagged Spikes and forcing Carl to recall them. Finally, Carl’s Skarmory managed to find its way back into play letting out another screech-like Roar, startling husk’s version of the physical wall and sending it out of play before another Whirlwind could be summoned. Some shuffling of his own occurred, and husk called upon his Claydol once more… this time in hope of spinning away the Spikes on his side of the field.

A critical hit!
It's not very effective...

Carl’s Skarmory took a page from his Zapdos’s trick book and set up a decoy to block the Rapid Spin. More Roar shuffling results in husk’s thunderbird appearing on the field again which forces Carl to sink so low as to utilize the dreaded Skarmbliss combo once more. Husk’s Zapdos was still slumbering but had some bad dreams and was talking in its sleep. Zapdos and Blissey continued their epic battle, Blissey Wishing it was healthy when needed and Zapdos continuously shocking the shit out of the pink sponge each turn. All the while, Zapdos’s vomit was again taking the toll.

End of turn #40
husk's Peruvian Skies: 53 HP
Carl's Blissey: 14% HP (Psn)

With both pokemon exhausted, but Zapdos being faster… Carl was left in quite a bad situation. Who could he summon to defeat Zapdos? “I’m in a really bad situation,” Carl yelled over to husk, “I won’t be able to win this. Best I can do is go down fighting.” The cocky young trainer had pretty much resigned himself to defeat. Suddenly, a vote of confidence came from the audience:

Mysterio [LL]: come on carl you peruvian slug
Mysterio [LL]: beat him!

goofball: husk winning pfft

Inspired by their belief, Carl decided he would do his best to please his adoring fans.

“Come on Blissey, give it one last shot!” Carl demanded as Blissey, with its final breath, threw an Ice Beam at Zapdos, but not before the legendary pokemon Rested off its damage.

Blissey is hurt by poison!
Blissey fainted!

6-4 husk

Carl decided to try his luck with the departed, and sent out his ghost pokemon Gengar. There was only a 33% chance of taking damage from a Sleep Talking Zapdos knowing Toxic and Thunderbolt after all! Husk obviously realized this as well and did not like his odds so he chose to give Zapdos a real rest and sent out Regice suspecting an Ice Punch of some sorts. Carl made a preemptive move however and quickly switched to his mighty Tyranitar. Husk intelligently noticed that Tyranitar was slowly being hurt by the Spikes on the field and recognized there must be a hidden Choice Band somewhere. Suspecting Claydol, Carl summoned his Tyranitar to do something special. “Tyranitar.. use your Hidden Power!!” he demanded. The dome light up with a bright green light and when the flash subsided, Tyranitar was face to face with… Skarmory! And it looked as though the bird took almost no damage and seemed to be almost mocking Tyranitar for the not very effective hit. Again, husk ordered the Whirlwinds to keep shuffling Carl’s pokemon until once again it was Skarmory versus Skarmory. Carl was making little ground.. but had no choice other than to force husk’s Skarmory out with a Roar. A role reversal then took place as Carl’s Skarmory was now face to face with husk’s Tyranitar.

Though managing to break Tyranitar’s concentration, Carl’s steel bird was in no shape to defeat the mighty stone dinosaur. Another Roar was let loose as Tyranitar tossed some large boulders at Skarmory. The bumbling clay idol took the field in place of the much more intimidating prehistoric creature. Assuming Claydol would use Rapid Spin or a super effective Hidden Power against his Skarmory, Carl sent in Gengar only to be met with a hard hitting beam of ice. Taking a risk as hot shot trainers often do, Carl did what he thought needed be done.. praying his strategy would succeed. “Gengar, Hypnosis now!!”

The whole crowd seemed to hold their breath; or they were sleeping too. When the light display was over, Claydol was sawing logs and Gengar was hanging on with about half his health left. “Hope..” Carl mumbled to himself. He was not out just yet.

Gengar proceeded to launch its most powerful attack, Thunderbolt, even though it wouldn’t do damage to husk’s snoozing Claydol. Luckily, husk made a move Carl hoped for and sent in… Skarmory?! Being weak to electric attacks, husk was forced to recall his pokemon just as soon as he sent it out.

5-4 husk

The mighty special wall ice cube popped back out of its pokeball, nearly done Resting and looking for blood. Carl decided that with Zapdos still around, he needed his Gengar as long as possible and swapped in his trusty Swampert to take an Ice Beam from a revived Regice. The stadium began to tremor and shake and husk recognized that his flying Zapdos would be immune to the upcoming Earthquake thus switching out Regice. Still Resting from its earlier battle with Carl’s fainted Blissey, Carl knew his Swampert would be able to at least weaken the thunderbird. However, even he did not predict this:

Zapdos, though sleeping, looked like it got a swift kick in the balls. With Zapdos down to a sliver of health and still requiring a turn to sleep, husk had no choice but to sacrifice his MVP.

4-4 tied

Swampert did take a toll from his short lived bought with Zapdos however and the effects of Toxic were still lingering. Recognizing this, husk sent in his Tyranitar and stalled Swampert down with Substitutes. However, it was to no avail.

4-3 Carl

At this point, Carl realized his fans may not have been so crazy after all. He was holding a slight edge and Swampert managed to hold its poisoning off long enough to faint Tyranitar and force husk to choose another pokemon.

husk sent out Fatal Tragedy (Lv.100 Metagross)!

3-3 tied

Carl recalled his first pokemon, “Wow, way to go Swampert.” Reflecting on the battle so far, Carl reminded himself that husk’s remaining pokemon were a sleeping Claydol, a semi-damaged Regice and the relatively unknown and unseen Metagross. This matched up well, or well enough, with his remaining usable pokemon of Gengar, Skarmory and Tyranitar. Carl decided to scope out Metagross a bit more by sending in his Skarmory and having it use Substitute.

Fatal Tragedy used Meteor Mash!
Fatal Tragedy's attack missed!

Even Lady Chris (luck) was on Carl’s side now. Husk stood there across the field in shock, urging his Metagross to not miss again. Locked in to his attack via Choice Band, Metagross struck Skarmory’s Substitute successfully this time around with one strong swipe of its metal claw. In defense, Skarmory scared it off with a Roar. Carl was looking to use the Spikes on the field and Metagross’s lack of Leftovers to his advantage in the late game. Spikes shuffling once again, Metagross and Claydol exchanged spots on the field until Regice made a final appearance. It was too late, however, and Skarmory made the final blow with a relatively weak Drill Peck.

In shock, Carl was only capable of mustering a simple “wow” even when husk came over to shake his hand and congratulate him with a “good game.” It was one of the biggest turn arounds in Carl’s fairly extensive career and the normally arrogant trainer was just thankful to make it to the second round. Without so much as a sign of regret on his face, husk smiled, waved and said to his adversary “This was the best battle I’ve had in a while.” He turned and slowly walked out of the stadium, met with large amounts of cheers and a few fan critiques:

goofball: husk stop making teams broken to gengar

Carl basked in the moment once more and the proceeded back toward the lobby in order to heal his pokemon and await the next challenge.

Entertaining. I was rooting for husk since he likes better music, but it was ok anyway I guess! :( :( :(

cool thread, great read.

EGC needs more threads like this imo, as long as the quality is at least as good as this thread's.

carl bringing some life to the advance forums! very nice story, I always like the ones that are like a "real" pokemon battle

Yea, you depicted yourself as a proud but a person respectful of his opponent as well as husk as a great sportsman, making t he warstory all the better.

Gg...good thing Zapdos' annoying factors are negated by ice beam hax xd
