I got this idea from reading through the discussion on species clause, and someone questioned whether we should ban pokemon that are functionally identical.
Well, I know of 3 pokemon that are functionally identical! So I'm going to create a team that takes advantage of this.
This is the main offensive core of the team. Cleffa at level 1, and Clefairy and Clefable at level 2, all taking advantage of their Magic Guard ability and Focus Sash in order to get kills with Endeavor and passive Hail damage.
This obviously requires Abomasnow.
So now I needed to start looking at some of the problems resulting from this combination, which are:
-Weather changers
-Pokemon with multi-hit moves
-Ghost types
-Ice types
-The fact that I am using 4 pokemon that essentially cannot switch into anything
I picked Dugtrio as a pokemon to generally hurt the weather changers, since that is the most obvious threat, and gave him a Choice Band with Pursuit to try and help me out against Gengar. However, Dugtrio also can switch into basically nothing, which makes that aspect of my team probably the most damning in the end. Dugtrio is by no means a permanent member of this team.
I also picked Walrein because the idea of 3 Cleffa family kills + 2 Stallrein kills greatly amused me, and meant that Abomasnow + Dugtrio would have to scramble up 1 last kill between them. Walrein does not particularly synergize well with the other pokemon, however, so I am open to changing him and Dugtrio around.
So what I have been using is:
Abomasnow (M) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Blizzard
- Grass Knot
- Energy Ball
- Leech Seed
I need him, obviously. I am not particularly attached to the Choice Scarf set, nor am I sure what moves to use on it (obviously). What this does let me do is to kill Dragonite, Latios, and Latias when they are the last pokemon remaining, and to be able to directly attack Gengar.
Cleffa (F) @ Focus Sash
Trait: Magic Guard
EVs:
Hardy Nature
- Endeavor
- Substitute
- Toxic
- Protect
Clefairy (F) @ Focus Sash
Trait: Magic Guard
EVs:
Hardy Nature
- Endeavor
- Protect
- Substitute
- Toxic
Clefable (M) @ Focus Sash
Trait: Magic Guard
EVs:
Hardy Nature
- Endeavor
- Substitute
- Protect
- Toxic
Toxic is to try and catch ice types when they switch in, as well as giving me something to do against non-Gengar ghosts, because I can poison them and then switch to Walrein. Protect is to stop Fake Out, and I have never found the opportunity to use Substitute, but I have also not seen a fourth useful move to use here
Walrein (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Ice Body
EVs: 232 HP / 220 Def / 56 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Protect
- Substitute
- Blizzard
- Roar
Like I said, the 3 + 2 kills strategy has not been very successful, so I am open to changing him. What he does bring to the team, though, is a pokemon that can actually take a few hits. I really do not like his fighting weakness, though, because it ruins me against Breloom and Gengar even more.
Dugtrio (M) @ Choice Band
Trait: Arena Trap
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Pursuit
- Night Slash
Dugtrio's purpose is to kill Ninetales and Tyranitar. I also wanted to use him to Pursuit kill ghosts, but they aren't really scared of him (for good reason). This spot is also obviously open to change.
Last disclaimer: I realize this is a gimmick team, you do not need to make a post to tell me this.
