Cherrim is a completely outclassed Sunny Day sweeper, with a pitiful movepool and lackluster physical bulk. Furthermore, without a swords dance boost, Cherrim's base 60 attack stat is thoroughly unusable, only boosted to an average level in the sun. Due to these issues, Cherrim is generally relegated to a choice scarf set, where it can utilize it's passable speed and possibly provide late game cleaning possibilities.
Outside of the sun, Cherrim is completely outclassed by Silvally-Grass, Lilligant, and Leafeon, from their respective sides of the attacking spectrum. In the sun, Cherrim is utterly outclassed by Shiftry, who outpaces Cherrim's scarfed set plus possessing better coverage and STAB. Regardless, should you choose to wield the mighty cute cherry pokemon, there are passable options to do so.
[SET]
Physical Sun Cherry
Cherrim @ Life Orb
Ability: Flower Gift
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Play Rough
- Facade
- Solar Blade / Petal Blizzard
[SET COMMENTS]
Cherrim's atrocious movepool leaves it completely walled by common pokemon such as Magmortar, Centiscorch, Garbodor and Rotom-F. At the very least, Cherrim's access to Play Rough allows it to be a niche matchup against Silvally-Dragon, who would normally wall it's special variant. This is of course, assuming Cherrim is catching Silvally-Dragon on a switch, as a sun boosted fire move from Silvally will make quick work of Cherrim.
Despite this, in a perfect scenario, Cherrim's attack boosted by Swords Dance is actually quite notable, but only while the sun is active.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
================
Cherrim can OHKO a 252+ Clawitzer from full in the sun with Solar Blade, after a swords dance boost. Petal Blizzard is the more reliable and spammable option, arguably, with a 31% chance to OHKO instead. Additionally, Cherrim with the sun out and +2 can check Silvally-Ground, in an ideal situation where it isn't running fire coverage, or max speed. Cherrim has a guarenteed OHKO on physical Silvally-Ground, but fears it's U-Turn.
Checks And Counters
==============
Premier tier wallbreaker, Sneasel, completely counters Cherrim with choice band boosted ice shard, and triple axel. Cherrim doesn't appreciate taking a STAB knock off either, which has a small chance to OHKO after stealth rock damage.
Cherrim is completely walled by tier giants Magmortar, Silvally-Dragon, and Cofagrigus, due to their resistances and bulk. Magmortar, in particular, shrugs off a boosted play rough and laughs at the puny solar blades, then proceeding to wallop it with any STAB it has to offer, as well as the chance to burn, completely ruining any chance Cherrim might have at dealing noticable damage.
Realistically, anything that is resistant to Cherrim's stab, or has the bulk to absorb non super-effective hits completely checks Cherrim, a good example being Corsola-Galar, who can strength sap and burn Cherrim ad infinitum.
[SET]
You're Too Slow!
Cherrim @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Flower Gift
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Energy Ball
- Pollen Puff
- Dazzling Gleam
- Healing Wish
[SET COMMENTS]
Cherrim outpaces the entire unboosted metagame using it's Choice Scarf. Moreover, Cherrim gains bug coverage in Pollen Puff, although it's uses are rather niche. Cherrim retains reliable grass STAB in Energy Ball, and possesses Dazzling Gleam for dragon types that may otherwise wall it. Another advantage to Cherrim's Scarf fashion sense is the capability to dish out considerably more consistent damage. Coming off of a base 87 Special Attack stat is much more feasible than a dreadful 60 physical makes this set generally more preferable- or at least, more tolerable. Lastly, Cherrim runs healing wish, in case a pokemon that actually matters has taken notable damage and is statused is in desperate need of rejuvenation. Cherrim can swiftly sacrifice it's cherry essence to heal it's comrades in the heat of battle.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Cherrim's only job is to pick off weakened foes, or to be used as sacrificial material to heal your landmark pokemon.
