Rock Slide provides Chespin some coverage against Vullaby, one of its best counters. Synthesis keeps Chespin healthy to continuously check Foongus, and the pressure of Spikes is beneficial for any team, specifically offensive teams featuring Pokemon like Alolan Diglett or Shellder. Tera Steel grants Chespin a resistance to Vullaby's Brave Bird and Wingull's Hurricane, as well as Shellder's Icicle Spear. Teammates that deal with Vullaby such as Glimmet or Tinkatink are great partners for Chespin, as well as checks to Hisuian Growlithe like Mienfoo or Mudbray.
