* Donphan uses its combination of its Sturdy ability and wide range of moves to become one of the most used Pokemon in the 1v1 metagame.
* Earthquake nets Donphan the highest damage output against the more important threats, most importantly against Iron Hands, Sneasler, and Raging Bolt.
* Gunk Shot is important coverage that allows Donphan to hit the strong Fairy-type Pokemon roaming the tier, like Choiced Iron Valiant and Non-Weakness Policy Primarina.
* Head Smash can hit Kyurem and Galarian Moltres, and the mere presence of the move also helps against Volcarona since it is forced to guess if the Donphan user will use Earthquake or Head Smash and act accordingly.
* Ice Shard helps Donphan against both Landorus formes and Garchomp.
* Counter is helpful against threats that Donphan cannot KO like Haxorus and Ursaluna.
* Bulldoze gives it better odds against Sturdy Pokemon like Magnezone, as well as non-Air Balloon Volcanion.
* Seed Bomb is used for slightly higher damage output against Ursaluna.
* Finally, Play Rough is used for Urshifu-S and Darkrai, though the last one is only a chance to KO.
* While an Adamant nature will allow Donphan to net more KOs like the previously mentioned Darkrai, the Jolly nature allows it to outspeed some important threats, like Weakness Policy Primarina, Iron Hands, and Ursaluna.
* Donphan can really struggle against Water-type opponents, like Manaphy and Dondozo, so Electric- and Grass-type Pokemon like Zapdos and Ogerpon-W are good teammates for it.
