Monotype Choice Scarf Excadrill (Steel)

Steel
[OVERVIEW]
============
Excadrill is typically overshadowed by the same-typed Iron Treads, but Excadrill finds a niche on Steel-type teams as a Choice Scarf user. Iron Treads provides more utility, as well as being able to OHKO Landorus with Ice Spinner, while Excadrill provides more immediate power and has fewer switch-ins thanks to Mold Breaker. Excadrill is a valuable revenge killer and is able to spam Earthquake without being worried about Levitate users such as Latios, Rotom-W, and Galarian Weezing.

[SET]
Excadrill @ Choice Scarf
Name: Choice Scarf (Steel)
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Iron Head
- Rock Slide
- Rapid Spin

[SET COMMENTS]
Excadrill makes use of its high Attack and Speed to serve as a solid Choice Scarf user for Steel teams. Mold Breaker, alongside Earthquake, notably eases the Dragon matchup, as Excadrill can ignore Levitate from the likes of Latios, Latias, and Hydreigon. Iron Head allows Excadrill to hit Fairy- and Ice-types such as Flutter Mane, Iron Valiant, and Kyurem. Rock Slide allows Excadrill to threaten Flying-types such as Zapdos and Dragonite that would hope to switch into Earthquake. Since Iron Treads is typically replaced by Excadrill, Rapid Spin is a logical last move and is the best way for Steel team to remove entry hazards from only their side of the field.

Gholdengo is a solid teammate for Excadrill, as not only can it switch into Fighting-type attacks, but it can use Thunder Wave to slow down opposing Choice Scarf users to ensure Excadrill outspeeds them, such as Greninja, Hisuian Samurott, and Latios. Gholdengo also appreciates the removal of Gouging Fire and Alolan Muk so that it can spam Shadow Ball without worry. Skarmory has a Ground immunity and provides entry hazard support in the form of Spikes, which makes Excadrill's job easier. Archaludon is also capable of using Thunder Wave, targeting Pokemon such as Gouging Fire and Ceruledge, and it can provide additional entry hazard support in the form of Stealth Rock. In return, Excadrill can remove faster Fairy-type threats that would otherwise check Archaludon, such as Choice Specs Flutter Mane. Air Balloon Heatran can act as a temporary Ground immunity, as well as being able to safely switch into Fire-type attacks that would otherwise make quick work of Excadrill. Empoleon and Hisuian Goodra procide Knock Off support to remove Heavy-Duty Boots from Pokemon such as Dragapult and Darkrai and resist Water. Empoleon also has the added benefit of deterring Defog via Competitive, as well as being a slow pivot option via Flip Turn.

Is this a mini or a full ? Reserving qc 1
This is technically a mini with an overview
Monotype currently allows C and D (subject to vetting) ranked mons to have analysis provided they have overviews which highlight possibly higher ranked mons that the reader might want instead of the listed pokemon. See more info here

Hope this helps!

- replace one latios / hydrei mention with rotom-wash
- maybe mention Goodra-H a little more specific and somewhere point out what really differentiates its role in comparison to a scarf tusk spread because if ur vs steel for example it’s a little awkward getting as much value as knock treads because essentially you reliant on other teammates to break past factors in gameplay like balloon gholdengo

“Air Balloon Heatran can be a reliable switch into Protosynthesis Speed Boost Gouging Fire, as it would be able to outspeed and OHKO Excadrill.”
- is this referencing the Choice Band +Spe Gouging Fire set? I would maybe just generalize this a little bit more so it’s not so direct / one dimensional and focus it on how Air Balloon just gives heatran a temporary immunity to eq while also endlessly checking its fire STAB considering a choice scarf excadrill can out speed every other gouging fire set besides when gouging fire is in sun with an active boost. I think breaking this down really elaborates more to the reader.

“but it can use Thunder Wave to slow down opposing Choice Scarf users to ensure Excadrill outspeeds them, such as Iron Valiant and Latias.”
- at this point latias is just setup fodder so maybe we can replace Latias with Latios since it has access to Mystic / Surf / Aura for Steel then we can add a pokemon that would actually fear swapping into a twave but maybe its just attempting to swap into Gholdengo assuming that it’s the standard Plot Stabs set. Pex -> Greninja / scarf Samu on water, usually if ur pex is in front of a gholdengo it’s bad position So ur usually forced to just sit in its face or go into something else depending on your team composition. Hydreigon is a good example as well but that got mentioned already. Maybe we can remove the other mentions of Hydreigon and put in this section “Scarf Hydreigon” since that’s the main set that’s revenge killing a scarf excadrill (if it’s chipped).
- thunder wave is mentioned for gholdengo and Archaludon but doesn’t actually define how they support excadrill individually
- empeleon over goodra-h ? when goodra already clicks knock off. Maybe mention both as knock off.

I’ll relook after this is implemented RoyalReloaded

"and somewhere point out what really differentiates its role in comparison to a scarf tusk spread because if ur vs steel for example it’s a little awkward getting as much value as knock treads because essentially you reliant on other teammates to break past factors in gameplay like balloon gholdengo"

idk what this means entirely but I think I did a decent job explaining the differences in the overview section, if you wanna clarify feel free and I can edit accordingly

OVERVIEW: - i want you also to point out that treads is also the go to ground steel pick than drill due to it being able to offensively take out lando-i which drill cannot do.

"Mold Breaker notably eases the Dragon- matchup, as Excadrill can ignore Levitate from the likes of Latios, Latias, and Hydreigon."
- this is not telling me nothing as it looks like mold breaker is an move. This also helps with adding in poison matchup as well due to eq + moldbreaker having zero swap ins besides amoonguss. So do like Earthquake paired with Mold Breaker notably eases the Dragon- and Poison- matchup, as Excadrill can ignore Levitate from the likes of the Lati twins, Hydreigon and Galarian Weezing.

- Move the Rock Slide sentence after the Iron Head sentence.
- remove the braviary, i would add in torn t or moltres or even d nite.
- Iron Head examples i would change to Flutter Mane and Iron Valiant over Enamorus / hatterene. Enamorus common set is scarf superpower which outspeeds us and after its boost we no longer revenge kill it with iron head. hatterene 2hko and some aspects run m fire still and comfortably chills behinds screens so its an awkward trade. Mane causes an annoyance while also still has a roll to be ohko behind screens.

"Gholdengo also appreciates the removal of Choice Scarf Hydreigon so that it can spam Shadow Ball without worry."
- Scarf Hydreigon is an unmon and also runs fire blast which has a roll to kill drill, i would mention like Gouging Fire or like Alolan Muk there.

- For a T Wave target on Archaludon mention it targeting Gouging Fire and Ceruledge (GF in sun is scary for Steel.)
- Lastly mention Empoleon providing pivoting via Flip Turn for Excadrill.

QC 2/2 after implements well done fam.
