Introduction
This is my first RMT. I’ve been lurking on Smogon since D/P came out, mostly in the WiFi section. I’ve done a lot testing on Shoddy, but I use PO now. Last night I won an OU tournament on Smogon’s server, with the first team I made for 5th gen. The main idea was to use frail but versatile or powerful sweepers, while at the same time having a powerful defensive core to wear down the opponent for a sweep. The pokemon I chose were either new ones that I wanted to try out, or old ones that got new toys. Now that I’ve almost got all the pokemon I need for the team on my actual game cart, I’ll probably start testing something new out on PO. Overall I like how the team’s turned out, and I’d rather not change any members. But I’m interested in seeing what you guys would suggest.
Team Overview
In-Depth
Mienshao @ Life Orb
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SAtk / 252 Spe
IVs: 31/30/30/31/31/31
Naive nature (+Spe, -SDef)
Fake Out
U-Turn
Hi-Jump Kick
Hidden Power (Ice)
Mienshao is the perfect scout. It’s got great speed and all around attacking stats. Despite being frail, a combination of Fake Out, U-Turn, Life Orb, and a cool new ability called Regenerator helps it stick around for a good portion of the match. Regenerator allows it to heal off residual damage and Life Orb recoil on the U-Turn out, or switch if the foe outspeeds me.
The set is pretty standard, two scouting moves, a powerful STAB move in Hi-Jump Kick, and Hidden Power Ice for coverage. HP Ice lets it take on pokemon like Gliscor and non-scarfed/non-boosted dragons. EVs are standard as well, max attack for its 3 moves, max speed to speed tie any other base 105s. In terms of IV’s, a 31/30/30/31/31/31 spread allows me to have 271 HP without investments (for LO) at level 100. But I also lose 1 Attack point (2 points after SD, with a 30/31/30/31/31/31 spread), but I think that’s an insignificant loss.
His purpose in the team is to scout out the opponents lead, Fake Out to cause some damage (and check if they have lefties), and then pick an appropriate response. Against most pokemon I’ll U-Turn out to a counter or something that can set up freely. Other times I’ll try for the KO, if Mienshao can manage it. He can also receive Baton Passes, which is explained with the next member of my team.
Gliscor @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 244 HP / 56 Atk / 136 Def / 72 Spe
Impish nature (+Def, -SAtk)
Earthquake
Ice Fang
Swords Dance
Baton Pass
Gliscor is a pokemon that I’ve enjoyed using since DPPT. When I found out it got Poison Heal as its DW ability, I had to try it out. With Poison Heal I lose an item, but it gives me reliable healing and prevents status. With his naturally bulky stats, I can set-up and do damage, or pass out to something that can. Gliscor gives me a check to threats such as Excadrill, while at the same time allows me to set-up something to threaten the opponent.
EQ is obviously there for STAB, with Swords Dance it can prove threatening to a team with no counter or check. Ice Fang stops other Gliscor from setting up on me, and hits dragons hard as well. SD is there to set-up and works with the fourth move, so that I can pass +2 Attack to one of the other pokemon that can use it to their advantage. EVs might look a bit weird, HP and Speed are standard, and 136 Def lets me hit the bonus point, and gives me extra EVs to put into attack. 244 HP is the magic number for optimal Poison Heal recovery.
In terms of synergy, Gliscor is an offensive threat that also rounds out my defensive core. It allows me to take Fighting attacks for Ferrothorn and Heatran, Ground moves for Tran, and Bug moves for Slowbro. The ground and electric immunities are a great help too, as well as being able to switch in on status moves (assuming the Orb activated already). With SD and BP, I can turn Mienshao, Haxorus, and sometimes even Ferrothorn (lol) into offensive threats capable of sweeping. A 130 bp STAB move off +2 base 125 attack is nothing to laugh at, and the same goes for a +2 Outrage from the strongest non-uber dragon. Ferrothorn can also prove to be a threat, if the opponent’s counters for him are gone already. It has lefties and Leech Seed to absorb health, while at the same time firing off boosted high base power STAB moves.
Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 48 Def / 208 SDef
IVs: 0 Spe
Sassy nature (+SDef, -Spe)
Power Whip
Gyro Ball
Leech Seed
Stealth Rock
Ferrothorn is the specially based part of my defensive core. It was hyped since before B/W came out thanks to its unique typing, stats, and ability, and it doesn’t disappoint. It’s steel typing gives me a dragon resist, and it’s usually the first one to switch into an Outrage, which lets me deal damage to the opponent while shrugging off hits.
Power Whip and Gyro Ball are Ferrothorn’s strongest STAB options. It prevents it from being set-up fodder, especially if Leech Seed is used on the switch, or if it’s Taunted. Leech Seed gives me a secondary form of recovery, while at the same time it makes the opponent want to switch. Stealth Rock is a staple on any team, especially since I've had problems with Volcarona before. EVs give it 352 HP for the lefties number and overall bulk, positive nature with 208 Special Defense gives it 352, with enough points to boost his Defense a bit. The Speed IV is obvious, to maximize Gyro Ball damage.
Ferrothorn takes Ghost, Dark, Grass, and Electric attacks aimed at his partner, Slowbro. He also provides a Water resist for Gliscor and Heatran, and a Psychic resist for Mienshao. Leech Seed allows me to pass a recovery move to any other member, usually Gliscor or Heatran. These two are somewhat defensive pokemon, but they lack an instant recovery move. Finally, Ferrothorn attracts Fire moves that give Heatran a Flash Fire boost, allowing Lava Plume to be threatening for more than just the burn chance.
Slowbro @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SAtk
Bold nature (+Def, -Atk)
Scald
Ice Beam
Yawn
Slack Off
One of my favorite bulky waters, Slowbro serves as the physical half of my defensive core and got an awesome new DW ability to play around with. Regenerator gives it a third option for healing, and it can heal damage without having to stay in and use Slack Off.
Scald is another new toy it got, giving it a decent STAB move that has a good chance to burn the opponent. Since Slowbro is my answer to most physical threats, that burn helps a lot. The burn also lets me switch in Mienshao, Haxorus and Heatran in easier. Ice Beam is there for coverage, and lets me take out non-special dragon threats, Gliscor, and Landorus. I decided to go with Yawn over T-Wave. Yawn gives me the option of sleeping the opponent, and serves as the only phazing move on my team. Scald and Lava Plume are my main status moves anyway. EVs are standard.
This guy handles the physical Fire and Fighting moves aimed at Ferrothorn. He also takes Water moves aimed at Heatran and Gliscor, Ice moves for Gliscor and Haxorus, and Psychic moves for Mienshao.
Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 244 HP / 16 SAtk / 28 SDef / 220 Spe
Calm nature (+SDef, -Atk)
Lava Plume
Protect
Torment
Substitute
Tormentran. I’ve never actually used one until this generation. And man, was I pleased with the results. For a long time this slot was changed, I was trying to find a good match for the team. At one point I did use Heatran, but a Flame Charge set, which didn’t work. After more messing around, I decided to try this set, and it worked like a charm.
This set is a standard, so no explanation should be needed. Lava Plume burns the opponent, Protect stops them from using their SE move after Torment, and gives lefties recovery. Substitute blocks status moves, and stops attacks. The EVs are pretty standard too. Slowbro’s ability to burn opponents is helpful as well.
Heatran absorbs Fire attacks aimed at Ferrothorn, boosting his own attack as well. He also provides a Bug/Dark/Ghost resist for Slowbro, and a 4x Ice resist for Gliscor and Haxorus. This guy wears the opponents down, which makes them open for a sweep by a boosted Mienshao or Haxorus. I needed some kind of special threat (Slowbro doesn’t really count as a threat), so this fits in nicely.
Haxorus @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 36 HP / 252 Atk / 220 Spe
Adamant nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
Outrage
Dual Chop
Earthquake
Rock Slide
When I found out that the second strongest Outrage user had a cool shiny form, I had to put it on my team. Haxorus was blessed with a monstrous 147 Attack stat, a nifty ability, and a decent speed stat. This made him a great candidate for a Scarf user. I needed some kind of speed to round out my relatively slow team, with some power to back it up, so he fit in well.
A scarf’d, +2 Outrage proves to be a threat for anything, even steels that switch in. When it's passed a SD, he reaches 864 Attack, which not many can withstand. Dual Chop gives me something to threaten pokemon behind Substitutes. Mold Breaker Earthquake is amazing, since a lot of pokemon with Levitate are weak to ground. Catching Bronzong and Rotom forms in on the switch nets me easy KOs. Rock Slide lets me take out Volcarona and flying types, and still hits Skarm as hard as Brick Break does with an added flinch chance.
Since he only comes out late-game, after receiving a boost, or when he really has to, I don’t really focus on using his typing to switch in defensively. However, his Fire resistance lets it come in for Ferrothorn, Electric resist lets it switch in for Slowbro, and Water resistance helps it come in after Gliscor and Heatran. Either way, after being passed +2 Attack from Gliscor, there is hardly anything that can stop it from bulldozing through the enemies team.
Conclusion
So there you have it, my B/W OU team. Please leave any constructive criticism you can, I will consider all reasonable fixes. I don’t really need a spinner since there aren’t any SR weaknesses. Spikes is always a downer, but it can be played around. Toxic Spikes threaten Mienshao, Slowbro, and Haxorus, but Mienshao recovers with Regenerator, I switch Slowbro in to get level 1 poison, and Haxorus usually isn’t in long enough for it to cause serious damage.
Yawn is my only way of phazing, but against pokemon like Volcarona, I don’t have a solid counter. I usually have to rely on Mienshao using Fake Out to weaken them little by little, and I’m forced to switch around a lot. So yeah, suggestions would be helpful. I’ll try to edit a threat list in soon. My current rank is 2179/38507, not bad considering I leave matches when opponents take too long/boredom/laziness. :D
I changed the title cause yesterday was my last day of highschool, doesn't really have anything to do with the team.
Thanks for checking out my first RMT!
