XY UU Classy - Echoless

Hey there.
Recently I decided to come back to Pokemon Showdown, and have found the UU tier to be my new favorite. I made a fresh new team the other day and have had pretty good success with it so far. However, the team does have its flaws, thus I am writing this RMT up. Please remember that this is only my second UU team, and my first UU team I've made recently. Any and all constructive criticism is welcome. Enjoy!

My goal for this team was to have a good offensive core of two or three Pokemon to break apart the opposing team, allowing a late game sweep. The remaining team slots would be dedicated to supporting and switching around my attackers in the core. Building this team was especially challenging as I needed to account for as many of the many stallers and walls in UU, but I think I did a pretty decent job throwing a team together. Thus, we have my newest team, Classy.

Before I picked out Pokemon for my breaker core, I scanned over UU's usage stats and successful teams. I put together a small compilation of Pokemon I felt could be viable in a breaking core. The two I ended picking out were Shaymin and Machamp, but later decided to switch Machamp out with Heracross due to the rest of my team. The two had decent type synergy and covered a majority of the metagame, but switching to Heracross gave me a little less synergy to work with. Heracross' proved to be just as useful, though.

After having a decent breaker core, I decided I needed a third Pokemon to close up their weaknesses, at least a little bit. The main weaknesses I saw were fire and flying, both covered somewhat by Empoleon. Empoleon acts as my pivot between breakers and can also get some serious damage down, if needed. All three of Empoleon's weaknesses are covered between Shaymin and Heracross, thus being the perfect third Pokemon.

Now that I had a breaker core and a pivot in place, I could focus on finding a Pokemon to sweep about a little late-game. I had a problem with fire types and was afraid to use Chandelure since it brought new weaknesses to the table, so I found a Pokemon that can not only sweep, but also give fire types a scare: Mega Pidgeot. Mega Pidgeot is my glass cannon on the team, relying on the breakers and occasionally Empoleon to get rid of any potential threats to his sweep, and to weaken the opponent's team all around.

The addition of Mega Pigeot brought a new electric weakness to the game, which was something I did not already have under control, asides from Shaymin, but I figured I wouldn't be switching between the two too often, so I needed another solution. I scrolled through the best electric and ground types, and eventually settled on Rotom-Heat. Rotom-Heat countered electric types pretty hard, gave another ground resistance (because why not have two?), and also came with a resistance to fire type attacks.

Florges
FairyIC_Big.png

My last spot was quite hard to pick, as always. I checked out multiple Pokemon, but settled on Florges. Florges' typing gave me an immunity to dragon types I didn't realize I needed until after I put her in. The two weaknesses she came with, poison and steel, were both quickly closed with just Empoleon alone. Florges is the bulkiest member of the team, and sometimes acts as a pivot as well.

- The Product -

After picking my Pokemon out for the team, I decided to get right to the moves. Each member of the team already had their own situated which made this process much easier for me. I looked around at many different sets for each Pokemon, and compiled many together resulting in the following sets.

492.gif

Shaymin @ Choice Specs / Life Orb
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Seed Flare
- Psychic Earth Power
- Dazzling Gleam
- Healing Wish

Shaymin is the first half of my breaker core. Her main role is to hit holes into the other team as much as possible early and mid game. She runs the standard special attacker EV spread to complement her all-out offensive moveset. I switched between a Sitrus Berry and the Choice Specs, both having their own benefits and problems. I settled on Choice Specs, as it allowed Shaymin to guarantee a 2HKO much more frequently than with the Sitrus Berry. Seed Flare is the STAB move of the set, which I use against bulky water types and anything that would receive neutral damage from the other attacks on the set. Its 85% accuracy is often a large drawback, but Psychic's Earth Power's accuracy helps in situations where running the chance of missing is too risky, even if it does much less damage. Earth Power also helps shut down Entei switches, which happen often while Shaymin's on the field. Dazzling Gem was mainly a filler move, but can sometimes be useful against Haxorus and Salamence, if Shaymin gets the chance on a switch. Healing Wish sometimes will come in handy when its turning into late game and Shaymin is becoming more predicted and less necessary in the battle. The main problem I face when using Shaymin is that as soon as she gets hit once or twice, she's down for the count. The Sitrus Berry helped keep her alive for a little longer, but sacrificed so much power I couldn't get anything too far down the health bar. I might also change the Choice Specs to a Life Orb which would allow me to not have to switch Shaymin around as often since she's so frail.

214.gif

Heracross (M) @ Flame Orb
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Facade
- Stone Edge Knock Off
- Close Combat

After scrapping Machamp for a faster Pokemon, I found Heracross who took his place as the second half of my breaker core. Heracross is a strong and seriously fast sweeper who can usually get one or two Pokemon KOed in a successful sweep. Heracross is usually played a little after Shaymin and Empoleon have bruised up the opponent, as he is pretty fragile. He frequently causes many switches with Guts + Flame Orb, and has many opportunities to set up a Swords Dance on top of that if needed to break heavy walls. Heracross can shut down notable threats to my team before they can set themselves up which is really nice. Facade is the move to go with when the opposing Pokemon resists Close Combat, or when I can't afford having his defenses dropped before getting hit. I scrapped Stone Edge for Knock Off after giving Shaymin Earth Power, which covers fire types better than Stone Edge did. As for flying types, Facade does more than enough damage and has perfect accuracy. His nature was switched from Jolly to Adamant so I can have a more successful sweep, but I might change it back for the extra bit of speed. All in all, Heracross is probably the MVP of my team. He can quickly take down and punch holes in big threats, cause critical switches, and come back on a free switch to sweep another turn or two later in the game. My main flaw with using Heracross is missing the extra bulk Machamp has. Although Hera is oftentimes more useful, he is fragile and is often 1HKOed due to my misplays.

Empoleon (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 SpD 248 HP / 252 SpD / 8 SpA
Modest Calm Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Flash Cannon Defog
- Grass Knot Stealth Rocks
- Ice Beam

Yay, it's one of my favorite Pokemon! <3
Empoleon was first put onto the team in order to be a pivot between Shaymin and Heracross/Machamp, but turned out to be much more than that. Empoleon can dish out hard hits and help the breaker core out, if needed. Flash Cannon helps cover over fairies; most notably opposing Florges. Grass Knot is my solution to Suicune and other stalling Pokemon that take neutral damage from many of the Pokemon on my team, while Ice Beam is taken by surprise by more than it should. Empoleon's 252+ EV investment in special attack really pays off when you can get 60% damage out of a neutral hit with STAB Hydro Pump. After that happens, my opponents will usually make some switches where I can then pivot into one of my breakers, or even Pidgeot, to start wrecking havoc. Even with all this offensive power, Empoleon is also the key defensive Pokemon on the team due to his partial steel typing. The rest of my team relies on his massive list of resistances to take cover under, which will almost always work out. Empoleon is probably the most well-fit Pokemon on the team, and is usually a hard ally to take out.

(After changing to defensive Empoleon)
I switched Empoleon to a defensive set and spread to give my team Stealth Rock control due to two of my Pokemon being prone to them. The new spread gives Empoleon a longer time in-battle, and helps him act as a pivot like he was originally put on the team to do. Even in a defensive position, he can still dish out hard attacks and cause some switches, even if they're less frequent than before. My team benefits much more from rock control than it did from having another offensive threat, so yeah c:

Pidgeot (F) @ Pidgeotite
Ability: Keen Eye
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Heat Wave
- Roost
- U-turn

L'Oreal here is my late game sweeper who KICKS BOOTY more often than not. Pidgeot is almost always the winning factor in my battles, as it outspeeds most everything in the tier with 252+ EV investment in speed. I run the standard set for her, even if its the most common. This set is quite self explanatory, aside from the U-Turn. I chose this move over Substitute as it can get Pidgeot out of the battle while getting a little bit of damage onto the opponent if needed, often finishing them off. As the glass cannon it is, Pidgeot is pretty fragile, but roost can save her when taking non-super effective hits. Pidgeot fulfills her duties as a late game sweeper pretty well, but has a hard time dealing with Stealth Rocks. I can't seem to fit a Defog or spinner on the team, so I have to play assuming Pidgeot will come into battle always with 75% health instead of full. I was thinking about changing Pidgeot out for Crobat, but doing so I would loose a lot of momentum in battle.

479-heat.gif

Rotom-Heat @ Chesto Berry
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpA
Bold Nature
- Overheat
- Volt Switch
- Will-O-Wisp
- Rest

While making the set for Rotom-Heat, I noticed I didn't have any status moves on the rest of my time, and decided to switch from an offensive set to a defensive set based around Will-O-Wisp. Rotom-Heat's main job is to act as a shield against fire and electric type attacks aimed towards the rest of my team, but also turns out to be my lead quite often. Will-O-Wisp, although unreliable, can be an instant game changer. A burned opponent gives Heracross an easier time setting up, or waiting a turn for the Flame Orb to kick in, and also helps Shaymin get a STAB Seed Flare in with less punishment for a miss. Rotom-Heat is pretty much a one-trick-pony, and doesn't have any other benefits to the team other than resisting two types and being able to inflict burns. Despite his basic job, Rotom-Heat is a very important part of the team. Rotom-Heat does his simple task quite well, however is walled by most fire types; especially opposing Rotom-Heats. I don't exepect Rotom to get any kills in a game, but instead just stay quiet and switch in when necessary.

EDIT: I'm thinking about changing this guy to Entei. I've made a set and have tried him out a few times, and he has proven himself more useful than Rotom-Heat so far. He carries a ground type (as does Shaymin now), so I have another solution to opposing electric types. Entei also benefits from defensive Empoleon quite a lot, which allows him to excel and do more than just be a wall for fire / electric types. Thoughts?

Florges (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Flower Veil
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
- Aromatherapy
- Moonblast
- Calm Mind
- Synthesis

Just like every other team in UU, my last slot is filled with Florges... Yeah. Florges is my team's cleric and is quite good at her job. She probably spends the most time on the field out of all 6 Pokemon, so Synthesis helps her out much more than Wish did, especially since I don't run Protect on the set. By healing the team with Aromatherapy and herself with Synthesis, Florges can come in multiple times throughout a round and prove herself useful almost every time. Calm Mind is on the set for when staying in would be a better idea than switching, and can potentially get a KO with neutral or super effective damage after one or two 1.5x boosts to her special attack. I often forget how strong Moon Blast can be when not at a type disadvantage, and it surprises me more than my opponent when I get 60% off a with a single hit. Florges switches around quite a bit, so Empoleon's new defog really helps her out. Florges is easily the best defensive Pokemon to support the rest of my team, even if she's found on 20% of teams...

- The Results -

Since building the team, I have had some pretty decent success. Below are some calculations and replays, if you'd like to check them out.

Hey Echo, nice balance team. You have a good team structure, but some of your sets seem a bit unorthodox. First off, SD Cross should be running Knock Off over Stone Edge. You don't really need this coverage to hit Flying Types since Facade already does a shit them on the switch in and having Knock off allows you to beat things like Doublade which would otherwise hard wall you. From the make up of your team you should also be running Support Empoleon which would consist of Rocks + Defog over Flash Canon and GK. Hazard support is extremely vital to balance teams since you are generally switching more often and trying to preserve your mons and forcing your opponent to switch and take Rocks damage. In addition to that, you have 2 Rock weak mons which would really appreciate the defog support so that you aren't forced to Roost/Rest too often. Personally I think that you should run a more bulky spread, but if you like the power from Modest Emp go for it haha.

Your Florges set looks like it's trying to be two sets at once and ultimately being less useful than either one. Because of this you should really pick one or the other with the 2 sets being Calm Mind + Synthesis or Defensive Cleric. The CM + Synth set is great for breaking down bulky teams which I could see you were trying to do, but using Wish and no protect is really dangerous in this tier since you aren't guaranteed to receive your wish the next turn. On the other hand if you want the Wish support that you briefly outlined you should run Protect over CM so you can more reliably heal up.

Lastly I'll put some preferential changes that I would put on my own team, but aren't as pressing as the other changes I mentioned. These would include Adamant Heracross and LO Rest Min with Epower. Adamant Cross since its primary job is a wallbreaker and it just hits so much harder than Jolly and there isn't much that Jolly outspeeds that I can think of off the top of my head other than Adamant Lucario. And for Shaymin, I don't really see the need for HW support since you have a Cleric on your team which can heal up your mons and a good majority of your team has recovery and wish support if they don't. Epower's there to hit Entei mainly since it looks annoying to your team. I'd use it over either of your coverages, but probably Psychic since you have 2 very reliable Crobat switch ins already.

Fun team haha, hope I helped!

Thank you! :D
I just have one question about your ideas. Can Shaymin still get a lot of damage out with the LO instead of Choice Specs? I feel like it'd be too weak without specs, but I might be wrong.

Youre welcome haha and to answer your question LO Shaymin obviously doesn't hit as hard as Specs, but it still hits dents things pretty well. Like I said before though, this change is more preference so if you don't like the LO set, just keep the Specs.
