Chi-Yu's high special attack, Beads of Ruin reducing the opponent's Special Defence, and strong STAB moves such as Overheat, Chi-Yu can threaten large amounts of damage. Covert Cloak prevents Fake Out from Rillaboom and Incineroar making Chi-Yu difficult to reposition around, while Taunt allows Chi Yu to reliably prevent Trick Room and Amoonguss's Spore. Chi Yu has a strong matchup into Calyrex-S, as it threatens it with Dark Pulse and Overheat, and it resists Astral Barrage. Tera Water improves Chi-Yu's matchup into Urshifu-R and Calyrex-I. The allocated bulk allows Chi-Yu to survive Tera Starstrom from Choice Specs Terapagos and a Close Combat from Urshifu when Terastalized. The speed investment allows Chi-Yu to outspeed Adamant Urshifu.

Chi-Yu is paired well alongside strong Special Attackers such as Terapagos and Calyrex-S, as Beads of Ruin reduces the Special Defence of opposing Pokemon, which can allow OHKOs such as Terastalized Tera Starstorm into a Terastalized Calyrex-I. Chi-Yu also benefits from Speed Control support, such as Tornadus' Tailwind or Grimmsnarl's Thunder Wave, as Chi Yu underspeeds key threats such as Zacian-C, Zamazenta and Koraidon. Chi-Yu can struggle to deal damage against Urshifu-R, Incineroar and Koraidon, as both it's STABs are resisted.
