Teambuilding process

im a simple man, i like funny things, you know what would be funny, cobalion staying in for a month, this would be hard to make true without the help of others but i digress, i was building a team around cobalion which i would be using even if it dropped on new years eve and a grassy terrain team by seperation peaked my interest (i think this before it became a sample team) as it it was extremely strong without the need of sneasler, the team you’ll be looking at was partially inspired but seperation so i do credit him for the idea,
choie band rillaboom is a powerful wallbreaker and late game cleaner capable of denting resists with its hammer like strikes, and the terrain it sets up happens to provide immense and deep support for teammates like sinistcha whos grass attacks are boosted and hawlucha whos unburden is activated along with the same grassy seed boost, both of these pokemon can snowball quickly under grassy terrain but are considered to be balanced because they only have a single chance at sweeping

cobalion is a pokemon with many sets, so its far from easy to guess what its running, cobalion wasn’t just slapped onto the team, i needed to consider if it could actually fit and how it could help out the team in unique ways, grassy terrain helps it because eq is weakened and healing is doubled and it has a good speed for a defensive pokemon, iron defense is alternetive option instead of thunder wave, but fast bulky thunder wave is one of cobalions best traits so maybe zamazenta could be used instead of iron press cobalion

originally when i wanted a sweeper that wasn’t reliant on grassy terrain being up, i chose iron boulder, buts its lack of intial power and weakness to priority simply didn’t fit, so i went to roaring moon, one of OUs best sweepers and one of my favourite pokemon in the tier, its arcobatics is destructive after a boost and tera flying turns into a “deletion button and it patched the gholdengo weakness so moon it was , choice scarf gholdengo is last for its ability to ruin walls and revenge kill

team details

IMG_2314.jpeg

Sinistcha @ Grassy Seed
Ability: Heatproof
Tera Type: Poison
EVs: 252 HP / 196 Def / 60 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Matcha Gotcha
- Strength Sap
- Shadow Ball

sinistcha, is a great bulky sweeper with a secondary stab type thats one of the best offensively, its grass typing checks opposing rillaboom and ogerpin wellspring, and it can sweep late game if played correctly, matcha gotcha is boosted in grassy terrain and can burn kingambit who mauls ghost types, im thinking of adding hatterene but lets not underestimate its defensive utility, it also deals with rain!

IMG_2302.jpeg

Cobalion @ Leftovers
Ability: Justified
Tera Type: Fairy/water/flying
EVs: 252 HP / 64 Def / 192 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Body Press
- Thunder Wave/iron defense
- Volt Switch
- Stealth Rock/taunt/roar

i kinda spoiled what cobalion does in the beginning so oops? But yeah thunder wave is great and messes up switch ins because speed halving is awful, it actuallt provides so much in one team slot and this isn’t even its only solid set, but keep gholdengo in mind because it may have to volt switch out because body press and thunder wave can’t touch it, but moon and ghold can deal with it so its not giving free turns without problem

IMG_2307.jpeg

Rillaboom @ Choice Band
Ability: Grassy Surge
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- U-turn
- Grassy Glide
- Wood Hammer
- Knock Off

rillaboom is the mvp of the team, its the strong terrain summoning lead and destroys defensive pokemon for its teammates, without rillaboom this team wouldn’t exist because two pokemon are abusers of grassy terrain, knock off steals boots and allows more fellers to be chipped by rocks, u turn is spammable and hits switchs hard and allows for a pokemon to just get in, probably the most important of all pokes

IMG_2315.jpeg

Gholdengo @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Good as Gold
Tera Type: Fighting /ghost
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Make It Rain
- Trick
Hawlucha @ Grassy Seed
Ability: Unburden
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 128 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def / 124 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Encore
- Acrobatics
- Close Combat
- Focus Blast
Choice scarf Gholdengo is fast, has spammable stab and can stop a defensive pokemon in their tracks with trick, 439 speed allows it to revenge kill cinderace, dragapult, non sucker meowscarada and far more, terastal fighting boosts focus miss and takes care of kingambit if cobalions down and hits heatran, ting lu and hisuian samurott but tera ghosts means more shadow ball spam, good revenge killer, stall breaker and cleaner for the team
IMG_2316.jpeg

Hawlucha @ Grassy Seed
Ability: Unburden
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 128 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def / 124 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Encore
- Acrobatics
- Close Combat

the arrest of sneasler knocked grassy terrain out of the meta in dlc 1, but hawlucha is a worthy replacement, arcobatics and close combat are higher power stabs to make up for hawluchas middling attack and 128 hp helps hawlucha set up in the first place since unburden will be boosting it to 606 speed anyway and because hawlucha needs its set up tuns, but max speed can be ran too for max overdrive

IMG_2313.gif

Roaring Moon @ Booster Energy
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Earthquake
- Acrobatics
- Knock Off

roaring moon oh roaring moon, once ou, then uu, then uubl , then uber then ou, what a ride, what a ride, jokes aside roaring moon is a pivotal part of the team, staving off ghost types that would otherwise sweep or punch holes, tera flying is good defensively and gives free set up turns on would be checks like great tusk and iron valiant, but use it carefully, you only have one chance to use terastalization then its gone, and would be type advantages on pokemon like iron boulder could be weakened, so think before going through with the sweep

weaknesses

sun isn’t a good match up but its can be handled by skilled players,
dragapult might be a little tricky since you don’t know if its using meteor or shadow ball and enamorus with tera stellar is pest

enjoy my team, and please try out cobalion, you won’t regret opening your eyes, also please suggest improvements because it helps out a ton

Deep within the depths of mid ladder, there lurks a forest, covered in a terrain of unknown greenish energy
The player approaches wearily, wondering what the source of this energy is. Before they know it, the floor becomes green as Rillaboom throws its hammer relentlessly. The stout soldier Cobalion greets the opponent before volting out into Sinistcha. It is far too late, and the magical matcha lulls the enemy team to sleep, draining the life out of them and strengthening the green energy for the next unfortunate soul who enters Cobalion's Forest...

This is a very creative team, and I'm happy you have been able to break 1500s with the team! I have some suggestions that may help power up the forest and help you win more games. Two versions of the team are included below, and I will discuss them both. The Pokepaste to each team is linked right below.

Version 1 (same members): :sinistcha: :cobalion: :rillaboom: :gholdengo: :hawlucha: :roaring-moon:
Version 2 (new members): :serperior: :zamazenta: :rillaboom: :heatran: :hawlucha: :roaring-moon:

Changes (Version 1)

1. Choice Specs > Choice Scarf, Nasty Plot > Focus Blast, Tera Steel > Fighting/Ghost on :gholdengo:: In my opinion, you already have sufficient speed control on your team with :hawlucha:, Dragon Dance :roaring-moon:, and Grassy Glide :rillaboom:. Choice Scarf is not bad on its own, but if you end up using Trick on the wrong Pokemon, it can outspeed your sources of speed control and potentially reverse-sweep you. Not only does Choice Specs lessen the risk of this occurring, but it also dishes out crazy amounts of damage. Choice Specs + Make it Rain does more than enough damage to common switch-ins, so I feel like you do not need Focus Blast. You can keep it if you like, though I like the utility of Nasty Plot once you Trick your item away so that :gholdengo: can still be threatening. Since you no longer have Focus Blast, Tera Steel + Make it Rain does an insane amount of damage to everything. It also removes the Dark/Ghost weakness, and you have :cobalion: to resist :kingambit:/:darkrai:'s STABs naturally, so I prefer Steel over Fighting.

2. Close Combat > Body Press, Tera Water > Fairy/Flying on :cobalion:: I will list some calculations below this, but Close Combat does slightly more damage than Body Press, meaning you can invest your EVs elsewhere. If you switch in on Kowtow Cleave from :kingambit:, it will proc Justified, meaning your Close Combat will deal more damage, which would not be the case for Body Press. Tera Water helps slightly against sun teams, as you can terastallize against :walking-wake:/:gouging-fire:, live a hit, and slow them down with Thunder Wave.
64 Def Cobalion Body Press vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Kingambit: 388-460 (96 - 113.8%) -- 75% chance to OHKO
0 Atk Cobalion Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Kingambit: 408-480 (100.9 - 118.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

3. Fire Punch > Encore, Tera Fire > Flying on :hawlucha:: While I like the utility that Encore provides, your team currently has 3 members weak to Fire (:sinistcha: doesn't count luckily due to Heatproof), and Will-O-Wisp looks quite annoying against you. Also, :corviknight:/:skarmory: are difficult for your physical attackers to break. Tera Fire will give you a Fire resistance, make you immune to burn, and boost the power of Fire Punch so :hawlucha: can potentially break through :corviknight:/:skarmory:/:gholdengo:.

4. EV Changes:
a. :sinistcha:: You already have a high Defense stat, and with Grassy Seed + Strength Sap, you will be able to handle physical attackers very well. I used :sinistcha: a lot when it first came out, and with Calm Mind sets, I appreciated having the initial special defense investment so I could tank special hits and set up more easily. The defense EVs hit a jump point with Bold Nature.
b. :cobalion:: Your defense is already really high, and since you are using Close Combat now, you can increase your special defense and make you a more well-rounded yet still physically-leaning wall.
c. :rillaboom:: 96 Speed EVs let you outspeed :gliscor: and Pokemon trying to speed creep the scorpion. The rest is put into HP to increase your bulkiness.
d. :gholdengo:: Modest > Timid is a personal preference, but your team is already pretty fast, and the extra power helps in breaking the opposing team.

Changes (Version 2)

I wanted to make your team more competitively viable, as while these suggestions help, the team overall is pretty unoptimized with other Pokemon outclassing your current squad. I wanted to keep parts of the team that you like that I would be replacing:
  • Grass-type set-up sweeper :sinistcha: --> :serperior:
  • Fighting-type with Body Press :cobalion: --> :zamazenta:
  • Thunder Wave :cobalion: --> :serperior:
  • Stealth Rock :cobalion: --> :heatran:
  • Speed control :gholdengo: --> :zamazenta:
Changes

1. :serperior: > :sinistcha:: Terrain-boosted Leaf Storm is difficult to switch in to once :serperior: starts to rack up boosts with Contrary + Leaf Storm. Tera Ground lets you hit :gouging-fire:/:heatran:/:raging-bolt:/etc. with Tera Blast. Substitute + Glare + Leftovers + Grassy Terrain is an evil combo that will make :serperior: difficult to take out once an opponent is paralyzed. 357 Speed is also valuable to help you outspeed many threats. It can still take on :rillaboom:/:ogerpon-wellspring: with ease, making it more fitting for your team over :sinistcha:.

2. :zamazenta: > :cobalion:: Your main argument for using :cobalion: over :zamazenta: was its access to Thunder Wave, and that issue is resolved with :serperior: using Glare. :zamazenta: outclasses :cobalion: completely in my opinion, and you'll have a lot more success using this beast. Better speed, better bulk, better typing for what it is trying to accomplish, and better ability. The healing it gets as well as the difficulty of breaking its Substitute makes it a force to be reckoned with. Tera Steel helps you resist Fairy- and Flying-type attacks, boosts damage from Heavy Slam, and makes you immune to Toxic Spikes which can be very difficult for you to deal with. Heavy Slam is preferred over Crunch for this team since you have enough countermeasures against :gholdengo:.

3. :heatran: > :gholdengo:: I keep mentioning how Fire-weak your team is. Sun would demolish your previous build, but :heatran: helps this issue a little bit. One of the biggest Fire-type threats in the metagame is :gouging-fire:, and with Tera Fairy, if you have your Air Ballon intact, you completely wall its three moves (Fire move, Dragon move, Ground move). Even if your balloon is popped, Earthquake in Grassy Terrain will not do too much damage. Air Balloon :heatran: also walls :gliscor: without Knock Off, which is very valuable. The typing as a whole compliments your team well. Stealth Rock will annoy the opponent and make up for replacing :cobalion:. Magma Storm + Taunt lets you beat down :blissey:/:slowking-galar:. It is also a check to :kyurem:.

4. EV Changes:
a. :serperior:: Max Speed is necessary. Max Special Attack is optional, but it will allow :serperior: to break opposing teams more easily.
b. :zamazenta: The speed is arbitrary; as long as you have 389 speed or more, you will outpace +1 Adamant :dragonite:/:blaziken:. I have been enjoying the extra speed for opposing :zamazenta:. Max HP lets you live much longer and makes your Substitute harder to break. The extra EVs are pumped into defense to boost your damage from Body Press.
c. :heatran:: 40 Speed EVs lets you outspeed max speed Adamant :kingambit:. Special defense is important for your team since you are vulnerable to special attackers.

Whether you decide to stay loyal to Cobalion and use the first version or change to a more competitive team, I hope you have fun with it. I enjoy the lore you provided, small things like that keep Pokemon fun! :cobalion: :cobalion: :cobalion:

Now that's creative!
I'll definitely try this Team out. Cobalion was always my favourite of those Gen 5 Legendaries so it's cool to see you build a Team around it.
