So, the aim of this RMT is to showcase the effectiveness of Competitive Milotic and to show that if paired with the right teammates, Milotic can truly shine. This team has peaked at a score of 1706 for me, which really goes to show how effective it is. Of course, any suggestions to further improve it is much appreciated so without further ado, here's the team!
I have always been a fan of the fire/water/grass core as such a core is usually effective both offensively and defensively.
Venusar @ Venusaurite (Mega Venusaur)
Thick Fat
Bold Nature
252 HP/ 200 DEF/ 56 Sp DEF
- Sludge Bomb
- Giga Drain
- Leech Seed
- Synthesis
Venusaur has really gained a new lease of life with its mega evolution. This is by far, my favourite defensive mega because it is just so good. Thick Fat allays its weaknesses to fire and ice, and even mega Charizard Y in the sun cannot KO it in the sun with a fire blast. More importantly, it serves as an excellent counter to thundurus and assault vest conkeldurr since knock off wouldn't do much damage and its ice punch is only half as effective. Sub-Toxic gliscor is similarly rendered useless since giga drain would break its subs. Leech seed to annoy any switch-ins and sludge bomb is perfect against the likes of clefable and sylveon, and generally an excellent move against the new fairy brethren.
Milotic Leftovers
Competitive/Marvel Scale
Bold Nature
252 HP/ 252 DEF/ 4 SpA
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Recover
- Haze
Milotic is the bulky water of choice on this team. The venusaur-milotic core was one of the most popular gen 4 UU core and I would say that it works just as well in gen 6 OU as the two complements each other seamlessly, especially with Venusaur's new upgrade. I choose a rather standard spread for Milotic as in my opinion, a defensively oriented Milotic is what works best for her in the OU metagame with so many hard-hitters. As for its ability, Milotic has been blessed with two very usable abilities - one is unique to itself, which is marvel scale, a very useful defensive ability that further enhances Milotic's defensive prowess when it is afflicted with a status; Competitive is the special version of Defiant and elevates Milotic's special attack when any of its stats drop.
You may be wondering why use Competitive with a defensive EV Spread? The answer is many a time, an offensive spread Milotic gets revenge-killed/impeded way too easily due to its lackluster base speed. It is different from Bisharp since the latter actually gets a priority move in the form of sucker punch whilst milo sadly has nothing like that. Further, anything that can stop Milo even with massive special attack investment will check it nonetheless such as blissey or chansey. So I choose to maximise its bulk such that it is still able to check opponents and yet pose an offensive presence in the event of a Competitive boost. If the opponent team does not have a dedicated special wall or bulky water, a Competitive boosted milotic with no special attack investment can still prove to be very threatening. Once, my Competitive boosted milotic shredded the opponent team comprising galvantula, volcarona, tyranitar, dragonite, pinsir and greninja. Galvantula set up sticky web which honestly helps milotic a lot since it's kinda slow anyway (but it gets a free boost!) and fainted before Milotic started raping everyone else on the opposing team. Competitive is a very useful ability and the good thing is Milotic is not afraid of most defog users such as latias, mandibuzz, togekiss, skarmory and even defensive variants of zapdos (which manages less than 50% with thunderbolt/volt switch thanks to milotic's natural special bulk). Further, it comes in freely on intimidate users such as mawile, gyarados and landorus-t.
In this light, I don't think one can view Milotic simply as a pretty looking vase in a team anymore. With maximum bulk and Competitive boosts, Milotic can be pretty threatening as well. Haze is a winning move for milotic, even though it does counter your own stat boosts after you use it. But sometimes, that can't be helped since you would never want to let your opponent such as DD gyarados or SD Aegislash to set up. And it puts a full-stop to the baton-pass teams which is awesome. In all, use Milotic people! It is a really good pokemon!
Rotom-H @Choice Scarf
Timid Nature
252 SpA/ 252 Speed/ 4 Def
- Volt Switch
- Overheat
- Will-O- Wisp
- Trick
The last of the core. This little critter is too overshadowed by rotom-w. Granted, it is stealth rock weak and doesn't have the best typing around, but it is surprisingly effective. Think about it, it is one pokemon that can boast about not being burnt OR paralysed, which is freaking awesome. Overheat packs quite a punch to anything that does not resist it or not named chansey/blissey and even for the latter, trick will destroy them. Will-o-wisp is a standard bitch move that in turn, helps Milotic and Venusaur take physical beating a little better and also bitches things like mega mawile who thinks it can set up with impunity. It is also an excellent revenge killer against mega charizard Y with volt switch, although fire blast in the sun hurts rotom-h despite its resistance to fire moves. Ah, it is also an excellent talonflame counter. Rotom-H's bulk leaves much to be desired but it has not disappointed me much at all, really love it!
Latios @ Life Orb
Timid Nature
252 SpA/ 252 Speed/ 4 HP
- Recover
- Draco Meteor
- Hidden Power Fire
- Psyshock
Standard Latios over here, no surprises. HP Fire is used to kill all scizors/ferrothorns that think they can come in on latios with impunity. Draco is a standard nuking move although some things are surprisingly bulky enough to take a hit these days such as mega charizard Y at full health wtf. That thing took my draco with 3% health to spare sheesh. Anyway, latios is still a huge threat in today's metagame and it isn't my favourite pokemon for nothing. Awesome speed and special attack, with an adorable presence increase latio's game by so much.
I struggled between choosing latios and latias, and whilst I experimented with latias, I ultimately settled for latios. I guess latias has a bit more of a surprise element since it is viable both defensively and offensively. Latios is quite predictable since everyone capitalises on its offensive prowess but hey you can't deny that it is good at what it does. Recover > Defog for longevity purposes and the other moves are just standard coverage moves.
Excadrill @ Air Balloon
Mold Breaker
Jolly Nature
252 Atk/ 252 Speed/ 4 Def
- Earthquake
- Iron Head
- Stealth Rock
- Rapid Spin
Another standard excadrill movespread. Iron head is pretty awesome these days due to the prevalence of fairy types and the flinch effect is sweet. I used back good ol' rapid spin so that I don't get rid of the hazards that I set up although yes, it can be blocked when something annoying such as gengar or cofagrigus comes in. Ghosts are annoying but excadrill hasn't had much of a problem thus far. Mold breaker is great since that would mean I can kill or at least deal heavy damage to latios/latias/gengar and rotom-w on their switch-in into excadrill. Air balloon gives it temporary immunity to ground moves which is cool. My only problem is how it can be difficult switching excadrill in and SR gets set up quite late in the game which can be sucky.
Garchomp @ Choice Scarf
Jolly Nature
Rough Skin
252 Atk/ 252 Speed/ 4 Def
- Outrage
- Rock Slide
- Dragon Claw
- Earthquake
Scarf Chomp is quite the excellent revenge killer. I picked rock slide over a fire move because I nearly got whooped by a stupid volcarona once. That was just uncool, so I decided to pack rock slide in and it has not disappointed. I use outrage very carefully since a fairy can easily switch in but its rawpower is just so good. However, once again, I think things have gotten bulkier these days - special mention to mega charizard X who took my dragon claw and KO-ed back with its dragon claw - yet another uncool moment. The others are all standard coverage moves for garchomp.
In all, the above is the team that I hope to popularise and get constructive feedback on! The main threat to this team in my opinion, is something like latios. Its draco meteor hurts everyone on the team. It is times like this when I would think, "If only Milotic was water/fairy, damn it". And yes, use milotic people!
