Conkledurr (Analysis)

[Overview]

Conkledurr is the premier Fighting-type of BW OU. Its enormous Attack stat, decent bulk, and wide movepool make it one of the best Fighting-types available. On top of that, it has access to Guts, making moves like Toxic, Thunder Wave, and Will-o-wisp useless against Conkledurr. It also has the ability to counter powerful fast Pokemon such as Choice Scarf Terrakion, Shell Smash Cloyster, and +1 Volcarona due to its incredible STAB Mach Punch. It is also quite versatile, making it unpredictable, which makes Conkledurr one of the better physical attackers in BW OU.

However, DW OU is a much harsher environment for Conkledurr. The omnipresent Chandelure counters Conkledurr quite easily, as it is immune to Conkledurr's STAB. It can also prey on Conkledurr's low Special Defense by launching powerful Fire-type attacks, especially if they are boosted by the sun. In addition, Conkledurr has issues distinguishing itself from fellow Fighting-types Blaziken and Breloom, who both have a secondary typing and superb ability. However, despite being outclassed in some areas, Conkledurr's sky-high attack, good bulk, and access to Guts make it a great Pokemon to consider.

[SET COMMENTS]

Conkledurr's huge Attack and Defense stats after just one Bulk Up are what make this set so threatening. Drain Punch is absurdly powerful after Bulk Up, blasting through anything that doesn't resist it. It also heals Conkledurr, which is especially beneficial if Conkledurr has sustained a burn. Mach Punch is a great move that turns Conkledurr into an effective revenge killer, revenge killing the likes of Blaziken, Excadrill, and Choice Scarf Terrakion. The final move is up to preference; Payback is the best option so Conkledurr can obtain the fantastic Dark / Fighting coverage. However, Stone Edge is an option for Volcarona, Dragonite, and Salamence. However, Payback usually hits Chandelure just as hard, as well as hitting numerous Psychic- and Ghost-types super-effectively.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Conkledurr is very flexible when it comes to EVs. Conkledurr can go invest heavily in Special Defense with a spread of 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 SpD. With this spread, Choice Scarf Chandelure with a Timid nature will never OHKO Conkledurr with Overheat, allowing Conkledurr to strike back with Stone Edge or Payback. However, without much HP investment, Conkledurr will have difficulty switching into a physical attack. A more defensive route with a spread of 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD allows Conkledurr to survive a +1 Fire Blast from Volcarona. However, such a spread takes more Bulk up boost to be effective.

Conkledurr is so powerful that its STAB can plow through mostly any Pokemon, granted that it gets enough boosts. However, Ghost-type Pokemon are immune to Fighting-type attacks, so they can be an issue. While Payback alleviates this problem somewhat, Conkledurr needs to have taken damage during the previous turn for it to be effective, so Pursuit users such as Scizor and Tyranitar can trap and kill frail Ghost-types such as Gengar. Powerful users of Dark- and Ghost-type moves such as Hydreigon and Gengar are great for disposing of bulkier Ghost-types such as Jellicent and Dusclops. These partners are also great for disposing of bulky Psychic-types such as Reuniclus, Latias, and Mew, who have the ability to heavily wall Conkledurr. In addition, Conkledurr struggles against Flying-types such as Zapdos if it lacks Stone Edge, so Stealth Rock support provided by Pokemon such as Heatran, Skarmory, and Ferrothorn is highly recommended.

[Checks and Counters]

There is no reason you can't use both Guts and Iron Fist on the first and third sets. Also, Conkeldurr has the option to use a Flame Orb with Guts, also utilizing Facade. Anyways, looks great. Cheers!
