Construction Site
Warning: Unresolved Rules Issues

For players and referees T.Lv N and higher.
Onlooker commenters may be of any T.Lv, if they even play BBP.

Battle Rules:
Format: Typically b3p2
Level: Typically 4
Round Hours: 72
Battle Hours: 120
Custom Arena
All other rules standard unless specified by prompt.

What is the Construction Site?

In short, the Construction Site is a new way we'll be testing balance and system changes to BBP before they go live.

Each change or set of changes we want to test will be posted in this thread as a Prompt, formatted much like a Battle Tower challenge. Prompts will describe test scenario that players must meet to obtain rewards, such as evaluating a certain matchup.

Players are expected to coordinate to engineer the scenario being tested, such as a certain Pokemon match-up. The scenario needs to be fulfilled for players to receive rewards.

Because the objective of these prompts is to gather information, competitive etiquette is relaxed in several ways:
  • Comments from onlookers are welcome in the battle threads, so long as the thread isn't derailed from testing the prompt.
  • Players, referees, and onlookers may freely speculate about the battle and discuss possible plays or courses of action.
  • Players may request to replay a round that went poorly due to a play oversight, to explore it "properly".
  • Players in different test battles for the same prompt are welcome to compare notes and conclusions.
Each Prompt will have one or more required Pokemon provided to the the player teams as rentals. Players may replace required Pokemon with their own Pokemon of the same species, Forme, and the same Level or higher; if desired. Required Pokemon may differ between teams; in this case, players will indicate which team they would like to pilot.

Prompts may also require that players bring additional Pokemon to reach a minimum team size; in these cases, any required Pokemon will start the battle on the player's bench, so that they see play.

How do I help?

You can help by playing test matches in this subforum, or especially by refereeing those test matches.

Each player may play in each prompt once; whether their battle is stamped or not (see below). No such limit exists for referees.

As you post, use your freedom of commentary to discuss the testing prompt. Aim to capture:
  • Your feelings as you order or counter-order,
  • factors influencing your decision-making,
  • differences in your play incentives compared to the live play environment,
  • ease or difficulty in deciding what would be best to do,
  • interactions you find unclear or unintuitive that you expect will confuse other users,
  • and anything else that you feel is relevant and productive to mention.
Any player is welcome to suggest prompts for testing to the moderation team in the Union Room Thread or on Discord; but we do not promise to feature all or even many of those suggestions in this thread. We'll use our discretion to determine if a prompt is productively testable.

On the BBP Discord (cw: Discord link), we also have a matching subforum for discussing testing prompts:

1745020409290.png

For moderators: Ensure prompts sourced from the playerbase have clear objectives and balanced teams, or we can expect the prompt to be difficult to fill or to produce confused data.

What do I get?

Less than you normally would.

For each round reffed, Players earn 1:rule book:Accolade, and referees earn 3:rule book:Accolades, counting replayed rounds, to a maximum of 10 rounds. Rewards are only earned if the prompt is tested to the satisfaction of the moderator team.

When a test match finishes, one or more BBP Moderators should be tagged to review the match. If the prompt is followed and the thread is annotated decently, we'll stamp it with our approval (that's right! free approval on offer!) and players and refs will be permitted to claim the rewards.

If the match is played ignoring the prompt, or the annotations are lazy in content; we may ask for more annotation, send the battle back to a prior state, or even just reject one or more user's contributions. In this case, we'll stamp approval only the users we're pleased with. (Such as a referee stuck with lazy players. We don't really care about your formatting or grammar, as long as we can read it.)

Prompt: Indefinite Stat Stages
Arena Effect: Stat stages are created with indefinite duration. (They still end when the Pokemon leaves play, by default.)
Format: b3p2 Singles

Test Scenario: Attain +4 or more, or attain -4 or more, in a stat stage.

Questions:
  • Is this balanced? Is it any good?
  • Does the game now revolve around these moves and abilities?
  • Should Speed be included with these changes? Is that safe?
  • Are there sufficient counter-moves? Counter-items? Counter-mons?
  • Are Justified, Lightning Rod, and Storm Drain still okay?
  • Should they cost more? Should they cost less?

The May patch is not long out, but there's no real reason in the patch to delay this test.

Remember that other players can also play the Indefinite Stat Stages prompt. I could absolutely use more data.

I'm less worried about assigning missions with these prompts. I think providing (and mandating) Rentals does most of what I wanted missions to be doing, anyway.

I'd like players to collaborate with each other when testing in the following ways:
  • If one player gets exploded, rewind to a previous state and explore other choices or options.
  • Rig the rolls a certain way, to see a rare result or to throw out unlikely results.
  • Workshop one anothers' orders, to better play around the prompted object.
With mutual consent, any of the above tools are at your disposal. I'm also open to allowing many more game-state mods, given good reasoning and civil player behavior. I'd like players to think of prompts less as a normal battle; and more like this:

1747484070753.png

All that said, we have a new prompt for players:

Prompt: Iron Fist Proposal: "Plus"
Arena Effect: Training Stage

The text of Iron Fist is as follows:
Iron Fist
The Pokemon has trained their fists with patience, concentration, and discipline.

While the user is Ledian: Bonuses granted to the user's attacks by Attack Forte are doubled (x2).

When the user executes an attack tagged #Punch: Grant the user Attack Forte 10, also named "Plus", until they successfully complete an attack not tagged #Punch.

Format: b4p3 Singles
  • 1 Technique Control (tech would distract from the prompt)
  • One starting player drafts 1 Pokemon, then players draft 2 Pokemon (or as many as possible) at a time until the pool is empty.
  • If Ledian remains to be drafted when drafting last, you must draft Ledian.
  • The player who drafts last sends out first.
  • Send out no more than 1 Pokemon you didn't draft.
Questions:
  • Is this balanced? Is it any good?
  • Does this create the desired play pattern often enough? (Punch -> Punch/Nonpunch -> optional nonpunch)
  • Is the default Power Bonus of 2 sorely missed?
  • Do we care that this interacts with Minus? Is it cool, or annoying?
  • Is it okay to exclude the highest-statted users, or to support their Special moves? Would it be annoying to remember that they're capable of this?
Draft Pool:
