XY OU Coverage OU Team

Hi Guys,

I have devised a OU Team today. As it is one of my first singles teams, I lack knowledge in this area but have come up with a team which has won me a few battles. Just suggesting upfront that my main PS account is not RaminO7, however I do have a account called that but I don't use it.

Without further ado, here is my team!

Crawdaunt (M) @ Quick Claw
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Crunch
- Crabhammer
- Aqua Jet / Ice Fang
- Swords Dance

I needed to start off with a sweeper, but I wanted a Physical Water Type and I decided to use Crawdaunt which I never have done before (excluding Random Battle). Crawdaunt is a great sweeper and has a good typing plus a good Attack stat. Firstly, I have Crunch which is my STAB move and thanks to Adaptability, it has 2x not 1.5x. Crabhammer is a powerful water STAB which hits almost everything OHKO at +4 & +6. Aqua Jet is another STAB move but it has less base power. I was also considering Ice Fang, but it doesn't have as much base power. Swords Dance gives Crawdaunt the Set-Up Sweeping Role.

Talonflame (M) @ Expert Belt
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- Roost
- U-Turn

I needed a second sweeper, but this time, I wanted something fast that can also revenge kill. Talonflame immediately sprung to my mind, and I decided it would be my second Pokemon. Brave Bird is STAB and Priority and hits very hard even at neutral. Flare Blitz is also STAB but doesn't get a Priority boost. Roost restores its HP which takes a few hits from the recoil moves. U-Turn allows it to sub back in and regain momentum, it also deals some damage on Starmie (A real problem).

Ferrothorn (M) @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD
Docile Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Power Whip
- Stealth Rock
- Gyro Ball
- Protect

Now that I had a Fire and a Water type, I suppose that I needed a Grass Type. But not a Sweeper which narrows down to Ferrothorn. It has great defence and dishes hard hits. Power Whip is the STAB move of Choice and covers up the weaknesses that Talonflame has. Stealth Rock sets up the hazard which hurts everything. Gyro Ball is STAB and makes good use of Ferrothorn's low Speed. Protect simply allows it to resist Overheat and other hard hitting Fire moves.

Manectric (M) @ Manectite
Ability: Lightningrod
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunder
- Flamethrower
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Volt Switch

Well, now that I had 3 Physical Attackers, A Special Attacker was Mandatory, and I realised I didn't have a Mega on my Team. And so, I chose Manectric. It has a good sole-Electric typing, and is the only Pokemon weak to Ground in the team which covers up that. Thunder is a blitzing STAB hit, however I was considering changing to Thunderbolt, for more reliable Attacking. Flamethrower is my coverage move which hurts Excadrill, which can really hit hard with Earthquake. Hidden Power Ice deals with Ground in general, but also covers Dragon Types in Dragonite, Salamence, Garchomp and Altaria. Volt Switch is also STAB and allows Manectric to regain momentum.

Kyurem @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Dragon Pulse / Draco Meteor
- Ice Beam / Blizzard
- Focus Blast
- Earth Power / Flash Cannon

Well, my favourite type is Dragon and I wanted a good offensive type, I chose Kyurem, as it comes from Unova, my favourite region :). Dragon Pulse is my STAB move of choice and can be replaced by Draco Meteor for increased power. Ice Beam is my second STAB move and can be replaced by Blizzard for more power. Focus Blast crushes through Steel, Rock and Ice, which can be weaknesses. Finally, I have Earth Power which deals coverage to Electric types, the only method of doing so in this team. Flash Cannon is a nice coverage move, but Focus Blast tends to cover these types.

Sylveon (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Cute Charm
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Moonblast
- Calm Mind
- Hidden Power [Psychic]
- Shadow Ball

To wrap a team up, you need a Fairy type and I struggled to choose between Gardevoir and Sylveon, but I decided I use Gardevoir more. So I thought of the obvious Calm Mind + Wish Passer set, but I decided my foe would assume I'd use that. So I kept Calm Mind but added 2 new sweeping moves (I would use Moonblast anyway). Moonblast is the STAB move and Fairy is a formidable attacking type. Calm Mind is the Stat Booster for it, and assists it in hitting hard. Hidden Power Psychic is a coverage move on Poison Types, which are super effective on it. Finally I chose Shadow Ball to hit hard at Gengar and some other types.

Well, that's my team. I also attached a Pokemon Showdown importable team (I wrote it like that anyway) so you can test it. I also would like to add that there is no specfic type that hurts the team and it is balanced out. I would like to get a few opinions and improvements (especially with the moveslots that I have two ideas for) and to optimise the team for Singles Battling.

Note to turn the brackets around both the "hides" the opposite way they are in the example so the function can work

Hello, nice team you got there, I might suggest Knock Off over Crunch for Crawdaunt because it hits even harder than Crunch if enemies are holding items, and you can spam it to cripple switch-ins, also Dragon Dance over Swords Dance to outspeed more pokemon after the boost, and it comes in handy because of Crawdaunt's horrible speed

Really cool team but your not using the most optimal sets on some of your pokemon. Don't listen to Dirkhann. He right about knock off over crunch but dd crawdaunt is terrible and completely outclassed by Feraligatar. Keep sword dance and aqua jet over ice fang since ice fang severs no real purpose. Also life orb is a way better item on crawdaunt since you miss out on alot of 2HKO with out it and I think adamant a better nature for the same reason. I think choice banded Talonflame would be best for your team if not than you should try an SD talonflame with sharp beak. Either way replace expect belt since that's a terrible item for talonflame. Protect on ferrothorn is kinda pointless without leechs seed for recover. If you want keep protect than I recommend replace Power whip for it. Kyurem is terrible in ou use Kyurem-b instead it literally better in every way. Lastly syvleon should use hyper voice with the pixilate ability since hyper voice boosted pixilate alot harder than moonblast. I think syvleon should be using a more defensive spread. If not than you should give syvelon a choice specs instead.
Crawdaunt @ Life Orb
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Crabhammer
- Knock Off
- Aqua Jet

Talonflame @ Choice Band
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- U-turn
- Roost/ sleep talk/ tailwind

or

Talonflame @ Sharp Beak
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- Roost
- Swords Dance

Ferrothorn @ Rocky helmet
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 88 Def / 168 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Stealth rock
- Leech Seed
- Gyro Ball
- Power Whip/protect

Kyurem-Black @ Choice Scarf
EVs: 252 Atk / 32 SpA / 224 Spe
Naive Nature
- Outrage/Dragon Claw

Sylveon @ Leftovers
Ability: Pixilate
EVs: 252 HP / 220 Def / 36 SpD
Bold Nature
- Wish
- Heal Bell
- Protect
- Hyper Voice

or

Sylveon @ Choice Specs
Ability: Pixilate
EVs: 240 HP / 252 SpA / 16 Spe
Modest Nature
- Hyper Voice
- Psyshock
- Shadow Ball/hidden power fire/Hidden power ground
- Baton Pass

Yeah, I understand Kyurem-B but it is a Physical Attacker and Kyurem (Special Attacker) actually does quite well in the team. Also DD won't work with Crawdaunt, SD gives it Attack boosts only and Aqua Jet covers the speed up.

Couple of changes-first off, SD Crawdaunt+Talonflame is a really good offensive core, since Crawdaunt takes care of Slowbro, Tyranitar and Heatran while Talonflame easily dispatches Mega-Venu, Keldeo, etc, but you're not using to it's full potential. I recommend these sets:

342.gif

Crawdaunt @ Life Orb
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Crabhammer
- Knock Off
- Aqua Jet

The moveset itself is pretty straightforward and functions the same as your actual one, but a few minor changes make it much better. Life Orb gives Crawdaunt a significant boost of power, letting completely obliterate any wall in OU except Zapdos which outspeeds you. Ice Fang is pretty much useless since it doesn't really hit anything that you can't hit harder with your STABs-for reference, Crabhammer does more than 1.5x Ice Fang's damage on Lando formes and Gliscor. Knock Off is used over Crunch because of the extra power and item removal.

Next up we have Talonflame:

663.gif

Talonflame @ Choice Band
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 88 HP / 252 Atk / 168 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- U-turn
- Sleep Talk

The Speed EVs with the Jolly nature allow it to outspeed max speed Timid Raikou and do significant damage, with a chance of OHKOing it after Stealth Rock damage. Choice Band makes it so you have a pretty big boost to power, and allows it to revenge threats it otherwise couldn't. Sleep Talk is used so you can absorb a spore from Amoonguss/Breloom/Venusaur and either KO them or U-turn out. However, what I think is better to use together with my upcoming suggestions is this set:

Talonflame @ Leftovers
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 248 HP / 244 SpD / 16 Spe
Careful Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Taunt
- Brave Bird
- Roost

This set is the stallbreaker set-it's an amazing support set that can still take care of Crawdaunt's checks generally supports it much better than a normal CB set would, as well as pairing up very well with what I'm going to suggest next. Will-o-Wisp crippes most physical attackers in the tier and provides very useful residual damage, and when paired up with Taunt they can easily take down any wall. Brave Bird is your attacking move, still makes Talon a great revenge killer even though it has no attack investment. Roost is very good for stalling WoW damage and generally recovering a huge amount of health, especially together with Leftovers. Normally, stallbreaker Talon runs 8 Speed EVs, but 16 means you speed creep any Talonflames trying to speed creep you. In other words, you're faster than the normal set. A very good relevant calc: 252 SpA Life Orb Latios Draco Meteor vs. 248 HP / 244+ SpD Talonflame: 253-298 (70.4 - 83%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
This means that you can switch into a Latios Draco Meteor, live it and start Roosting, making Latios take even more LO recoil and be able to continue on living whilst recovering lots of health.

Since you've decided to use Talonflame, you really need a strong spinner/defogger-I'll suggest 2 mons that pair up decently together: Offensive Rapid Spin Starmie and Tank Garchomp. The sets are as follows:

Starmie @ Life Orb
Ability: Analytic
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Rapid Spin
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam/Recover
- Psyshock

Starmie is your main Keldeo check, which can put in some work against Crawdaunt+Talonflame. You can also use Recover to deal with it better, but Ice Beam offers some valuable coverage, however, since you're gonna be using Garchomp it might be wiser to go for Recover. Your choice. This Starmie forces out a number of things in the OU tier, providing a free Rapid Spin. Because of Analytic, nearly nothing really likes to switch into this. Hydro Pump is your main STAB, and does a complete shit ton of damage to even things that resist it. Psyshock is your secondary STAB and hits Keldeo super effectively, as well as doing loads of damage to Mega Venusaur, 2HKOing it easily.

Garchomp @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Dragon Tail
- Earthquake
- Fire Blast/Toxic

While this is a pretty old set, it has been gaining popularity only recently, because now people start to realise how good is it. For example, Azumarill can't OHKO(252+ Atk Huge Power Azumarill Play Rough vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Garchomp: 266-314 (63.3 - 74.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO) while after Rocks, Earthquake can 2HKO and since you outspeed you can most of the team beat it 1 on 1(0 Atk Garchomp Earthquake vs. 240 HP / 0 Def Azumarill: 162-192 (40.3 - 47.8%) -- 58.6% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock) you don't actually need Rocks since Rough Skin+Rocky Helmet deal over 30% health. SR is mandatory on every team, no more comments on that. Dragon Tail switches out the opponent and can grant some passive damage with Rocks and decent damage when paired with STAB. EQ is your main attack, and deals with Azumarill and Bisharp-in fact, Bisharp can barely 2HKO Garchomp at +2, while Garchomp comfortably OHKOs with an Earhtquake. The last slot is usually Fire Blast to deal with Ferrothorn and Scizor, since both are 2HKOd by it, while doing pretty much nothing in return(+6 84 Atk Mega Scizor Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Garchomp: 313-369 (74.5 - 87.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO, you can see how bulky it is and this is never getting to +6 if Garchomp is around anyway). Toxic is another alternative, but that means Mega Scizor(the bulky variant) uses you setup fodder(0 Atk Garchomp Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Scizor: 102-120 (36.2 - 42.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock, offensive SD's Scizor strongest move, Superpower doesn't even 2HKO and because of the damage from Rough Skin+Rocky Helmet and the defense drop, Garchomp actually 2HKOs)

Manectric is perfectly fine, except Flamethrower, since IMO you're better off with Overheat-you're gonna be Volt Switching all the time anyway, might as well deal better with Ferrothorn and Scizor.

I don't personally like your Sylveon set. First off, you have Pixilate and no Hyper Voice, and instead you have Moonblast. Anyway, CM BP is very redundant here since you lack a cleric. However, your team also has trouble dealing with Mega Sableye so I suggest replacing Sylveon with this:

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Wish
- Protect
- Heal Bell
- Moonblast

This Clefable not only is the best cleric in OU right now, it also puts a stop to every single setup sweeper of OU except Zard X with Flare Blitz, which can still be dealt with with relative ease. Unaware also lets it easily deal with CM Mega Sableye(0 SpA Clefable Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Mega Sableye: 174-206 (57.2 - 67.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO and Unaware ignores boosts, while Sableye can sometimes 5HKO you, because of Unaware). The set is self-explanatory-standard Cleric set.

Anyway, this is my take on your team, hope the changes are good!
