Cresselia Discussion, the revival

Since it seems the old Cresselia thread died, how about we once again start a discussion for this pokemon?

(120 HP, 70 Att, 120 Def, 75 Sp. Att, 130 Def, 85 Speed)

http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-dp/488.shtml

Physical Move Pool:
Psycho Cut

(NOTHING TO SEE HERE!)

Special move pool:
Psychic
Ice Beam
Shadow Ball
Energy Ball/Grass Knot
Charge Beam

Now, it's not a lot to choose from, but they are mostly decent, and hey, it does learn Ice Beam. The grass moves might be a bit useless, but they could come in handy if you for some odd reason find yourself stuck versus Swamperts.

Support Move pool:
Safeguard
Moonlight
Psycho Shift
Lunar Dance
Calm Mind
Toxic
Sunny Day(for moonlight)
Light Screen
Protect
Reflect
Rest
Thunder Wave
Psych Up
Sleep Talk
Substitute
Trick Room

Now, here we have a great support move pool. All of these moves could effectively help Cresselia, depending on your playstyle. Reflect and Light Screen could be used effectively with this pokemon. Or you can be a staller with Toxic/Endure/Sleep.

Basically, here is where cresselia shines. I myself prefer calm mind and ice beam for my cresselia.

My cresselia:

Cresselia@Leftovers/Chesto Berry
Calm/Bold: 252 HP, 126 Special Defense, 126 Defense, 6 Special Attack
Calm Mind
Thunder Wave/SleepTalk
Ice Beam
Rest/MoonLight

This is my personal cresselia, it works as it can easly sit there and take the hits while it calm minds, only weakness is that it's only attack is ice beam, i've been thinking of replacing thunder wave for maybe sleeptalk, but T-wave actually works wonders. Maybe also repleace rest with Moonlight... But I don't want sandstream screwing things up.

Also, Cresselia has not been decided as uber, has she? I hope not, because there is nothing uber about it.

So, let the (new) discussion begin.

You normally don't need to make the discussion after an Analysis as all the competitive movesets are in the Analysis Thread, unless you have this exciting new strategy that hasn't been discovered yet.

EDIT: Beaten by OmegaDonut.

The problem is that there are a LOT of people that can't post in there. No disrespect to the professional analyzers, but if you use an unconventional moveset you could easily throw-off your opponent enough to win despite not using a cookie-cutter team.

Just because the best is the best doesn't mean the best is unbeatable.

I think the point was that if you don't have anything new to bring to the table there's zero point in discussing anything.

That is always a possibility, and we never allow ourselves to believe that ours are the only feasible ones.

Unfortunately for any Cresselia discussions, Cresselia is not one of those Pokemon that lends itself to good unconventional movesets. It's very straightforward - frighteningly good defense, some special attacks with Calm Mind to boost them, and an assortment of status/support moves.

Simply put, it's VERY HARD to come up with a good unconventional set for Cresselia because it has a very conventional movepool with very conventional moves (with the exception of Lunar Dance).

EDIT: I think Tangerine summed it up more succinctly than I did.

With cresselia specifically, I agree. Theres not much to do with it.

On the other side of the coin, however, you've got Nidoking. Nidoking has a thread in the analysis forum, and no mention is made of a Counter/Sucker Punch/EQ/Taunt moveset for him which will likely knock out any sweeper w/o a STABbed EQ and have lots of potential to mess up passers and support.

So yeah, next time just don't speak in such broad terms and I'll appreciate it.

Cresselia @ Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Psycho Shift
- Ice Beam
I wonder how this will function with Sleep Clause...

Cresselia @ Choice Specs
Trait: Levitate
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Psychic
- Hidden Power [Fighting]
- Ice Beam
- Charge Beam / Shadow Ball
Lol surprise

It'll probably set it off as you are technically putting an opponent to sleep. What I am interested in is if the sleep that you Psycho Shift them acts as Rest in that they'll wake up in 2 turns.

Actually, TRE said the Rest counter doesn't get swapped to the opponent. It's in the old move research thread somewhere....

What I need help on is the EVs on the thing.. analysis isn't clear like some others are about "needs 100 SDef Evs to take draco meteor well"

Can anyone with experience on it help me out? I'm giving it: Charge Beam, Ice Beam, Reflect, Moonlight

But don't know what nature/evs. Like having it take draco meteor well and enough Def, of if to max HP etc..

Cresselia @ Leftovers
Modest Nature
EVS: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SATK
- Calm Mind
- Moonlight
- Ice Beam
- Energy Ball

Is it good? Would Psychic > Ice Beam or Energy Ball be a good change? I need some help with EVs too...

My Cresselia:
200 HP / 200 Special Defense / 44 Defense / 66 Special Attack
Docile (Caught like that, 31 IVs in Def/Sp Def)
-Ice Beam
-Grass Knot
-Calm Mind
-Moonlight

I needed a special tank so thats what I made, but Cresselia can work just as good as a Physical tank (though I still prefer Skarm). Hell, with my build I've managed to stall out a Metagross before. So really no matter what spread you get tanking ability in both ends. Love the duck.

Calm Mind has saved my ass many times already, Grass Knot is amazing for taking down things like Rhyperior or Swampert (and after a couple CMs will take down most things weak to Grass). Ice Beam is a duh, standard on almost any Cress set I've seen.

Moonlight so far has been great for recovery. The only problems is the fact that it has low PP making stalling out stuff a little harder for Cresselia. Its possible, I've done it a few times already, but still harder.

Sandstream totally rapes Cresselia though. This is why I use my Cresselia for special tanking, most things that enjoy the Sandstream support run physical, so I use Skarm for main tanking and Donphan to offtank. Many people suggest STalk Cress over Moonlight for that fact, but I still prefer Moonlight since I haven't run into many Sandstream teams.

Some great stuff covered in this thread that wasn't in the analysis thread, thanks guys. That also gave me a few ideas of mine. Also, let me edit the post and add charge beam, I overlooked that move before.

I am a bit sad that my Cresselia has such poor IVs, other wise I could of done something with it.

Also, I've been thinking about Lunar Dance, what does it mean by completly heals? Does it include status effects? Seems a bit situational and.. a weird idea to sacrifice it to heal another one of your pokemon, but I was thinking it could be a good idea if used when Cressy is about to die.

Has anyone actually tested this move? Or any ideas on effective ways of using it? Seems situational, but at the same time useful.

From what I understand, its basically a full heal and status restore of the Poke. I'd never use it, it seems like a horrible idea to sacrifice a tank to heal something else.

Sure, you could heal some crazy sweeper and sweep the rest of their team, but do the chances of that situation popping up outweigh the moveslot being wasted for something you'll hardly ever use? Cresselia needs all its moveslots, especially if you're running the STalk variant.

Also, more CM Cresselia support:
I actually fought someone that wasn't too terrible on random PBR WiFi, and my lead with my Cresselia. It managed to barely avoid being 2HKO'd by a Staraptor using Bravebird, it got a CM off and a OHKO with Ice Beam. Proceeded to sweep their entire team.

I seriously want to make a team with 6 Cresselia. All hail our new overlord, the shiny Space Duck.

Cresselia@LifeOrb

Interesting, but easily walled. Cresselia can't really hit that hard unless packing stat support. Playing around with Psycho Shift could be fun though. Also, Rest without any means of recovering from Sleep or packing Sleep Talk is a really bad idea. Set up fodder.

Yea, now that I think about it, I'd put in calm mind. It was so if I got Burned toxiced, I'd rest it off, but Calm mind Work better

Does the pokemon coming in on Lunar Dance take the hit like a regular switch/Baton Pass/U-Turn? Or does it get a free switch in like normal when a pokemon is KO'd?

i've personally never played against a calm mind cresselia. the only problem i see is the lack of move slots. it sounds like it'd be great though.

I hate Cresselia. Farfetch'd needs an evolution so it can become top duck again.

LOL. LOVE your avatar!
