D/P Breakdown: Playing to win Vs Playing the game

Ive been thinking about making this topic for sometime now and I think It is about time that i do. With the release of the tier list that surgo was kind enough to make, This pretty much only seems fitting.

I have been playing poke'mon for about 2 months now so i dont have much experience. I have entered a few tournaments and won but I seriously question my competition. Just as a general question to all, Do you guys pick the pokemon that you play to play the game in general or do you play the game to win and thats simply that? The reason why I am asking is because I have been noticing a very disturbing trend from various players. I notice that the majority of players all play the same pokemon over and over with out actually putting much thought into teams as a whole. They just randomly pick up OU pokemon put that together and call it a team(Rate my team here on smogon is a perfect example of that)

At least 90% of every team i have played against has been the same thing for the most part with using the same OU pokemon quite repeatedly.

Electivire(LOL)
Garchomp
Salamence
Infernape
Blissey(bet we all know this one)
Skarmory(I havent actually seen much of him as of late)
Gengar
Starmie(I wonder what this pokemon is =\)
Heracross(Seems to have dropped a bit, but is still getting some heavy play)
Tyranitar(Cant forget our favorate bitch in pokemon =\)
Gyarados(how in the hell did i forget about this mofo)
Weavile(Uh.... duh?)

These are the pokemon i run up against almost everytime i play pokemon. It tends to get old and very boring to play the same exact nonsense over and over. I wonder if people have this same problem or do they just not care? I personally cannot stand it. Its like watching a movie 10 times a day for a week. Drives you fucking crazy to the point where you never wanna watch a movie again. So I would like to know what you guys think.

I have both a serious and a fun team. I usually use the competitive team on here as i dont really know anyone on it lol. But i usually use my fun team with friends.

You're very right, I have noticed this. I don't play with full OU teams and am proud of it. Something I have learnt to do is get a few pokemon I like, then build a team around them. Eg, A life orb crobat w/ U-turn - Use it in conjunction with Steelix to cover its rock weakness. Together the two are great defensively, and I still get to play with what I like.

I make a team that compliments other members on the team, so I don't get raped. It's serious with some of the standards it has, but it has some not commonly seen pokemon that people should be more aware of.

Aerdactyl/Raikou/Gyara or Nape/Blissey/Cresselia or Mesprit/Gliscor

Alright there's maybe only 2-3 pokemon that are less standard than most, but still. I'm pretty much using it because it works.

Other pokemon who are common as hell: Gyarados and Weavile

I bet, I never actually thought of that persae but thats awesome lol. I, much like you dont use strictly OU pokemon. I have a borderline and UU team that i use against OU pokemon (yeah suicide). I use all pokemon because i like the majority of them

I use fun and competitive. I like to experiment with new ideas I come up with, not all necessarily original, such as the use of Sand Stream / Sand Veil in tandem and such. However, there are Pokemon that are competitive that I like - Weavile, Tyranitar, and Mewtwo to name a few. I'm not going to use Pokemon that I do not like, but I'm very flexible. In fact, I love experimenting with new strategies and nicking other people's teams so I can fool around with them. That was how I came to love Weavile so much.

Actually I DO win. And i do win quite a bit using these pokemon =\. Anyone here on smogon who has played me can verify that.

No one wants to lose, We get that, But why does winning have to equal using the same exact shit over and over??? Thats probably what my biggest issue is.

I try to us BL and UU pokémon as much as I can but I cant survive with everyone using Mence and Ttar and even the odd Jirachi,Manapy.

It's too hard picking BL and UU pokémon to battle a full on OU team.

I try new experiments with pokémon like CBed Relicanth with Rock Head with Head Smash, Sure it takes 1-2 down but then they send out a Ttar or a Mence to pwn it.

It's too hard playing the BL,UU game, I stick with the OU tier now

I completely agree....well everything except for sticking to OU lol

I like how just because someone uses OU pokemon it suddenly becomes impossible to have fun.

It's very possible to have fun and be competitive but alot of people are just starting out in DP, and not everything has been tried out so there is obviously not as much variation as there could be.

I agree. As much as I like Mence, Tar and all of those Pokemon, it gets boring facing them every single match. Although I have a Salamence on my team, I don't have the typical specs/band/DD set on it, so it's different. I also try to include at least one Pokemon on my team that isn't exactly top-tier. Right now, that spot is being held by Claydol. I like Claydol. It's good at setting up Stealth Rock, it can spin, it resists fighting, rock, electric and ground attacks (4 common types) and has enough power left over to threaten something weak to Ice Beam or Earth Power.

It isnt impossible, Its just hard to have fun with you playing the same shit over and over. =\

Well if you aren't having fun just because someone else uses another team, I don't know what to say aside from tough luck.

If someone wasn't having fun with the game, they wouldn't even be playing in the first place.

I agree with this post, and to everyone complaining that "Theres no variety, everyone uses the same thing!", look at even the RMT or even the War Story forum. Every team posted that I have seen contains at least 2 or 3 pokemon that are not on this TC's list and there is actually a huge variety of novelty pokemon/team ideas that people have been using, some with great success. Just because you use pokemon like gyarados doesn't mean you can't still have fun playing the game.

I must also agree with you several teams have those pokemon you mentioned above. I though, usially pick about three of my favorites, regardless of there tier and use them. (For example, with mantyke being my fav, I always put my mantine as my special wall)

Not always true, I've played in different games and people play certain things just to win. For instance, I used to be an very strong street fighter player back in the day. People back then used Balrog and Ryu(popular street fighter characters) Over and over not because they were fun, But because they wanted to win. So I dont really agree with your logic in regards to that.

We have different views and thats cool, Just dont expect me to agree with them

I picked that monster-guy from brazil, Blanka I think

I said the game itself, not the character.

"This game is bullshit and I fucking hate it, but I'm playing it willingly anyway."

That makes no sense. If they aren't having fun with the character, then obviously something is still there to have fun with or something that they are playing, unless they are like a game slave or something for someone.

It's just like every other competitive game. Why bother using crap (Let's use Smash as an example since everybody here at least claims to play it competitively: Pichu/Mewtwo/etc) when you could use characters that are far superior to them (Marth/Fox/Sheik/etc)? Some can argue that it makes you predictable, but that rarely makes a difference if the character is used to its highest potential and the player has done some research on the other characters.

Competition is fun.

Have you ever actually had fun playing against someone that didn't know what the fuck they were doing?

Okay, this is pointless. If you don't like playing OU standards, go play UU. I think this thread proves there is enough interest in other people that you'd find enough opponents.

I dont play smash(i actually hate the game with a passion) But i understand what your saying.

If this was true, I wouldnt have made this thread to begin with
