D/P Little Cup Discussion

Little Cup has been known since the 3rd generation. It's a fun metagame where you use level 5 pokemon in battling against each other. But with D/P, there comes a big change. Let's examine how this generation affects Little Cup

Possibly New Viable Pokemon:
Chimchar
Turtwig
Piplup
Starly
Shinx
Hippopotas
Gible
Bronzor
Skorupi
Croagunk
Snover
Munchlax
Sheildon
Cranidos
Happiny*

These are some of the new pokemon I see some heavy use. Gible, Skorupi, and Bronzor could possibly become standards, along with Hippopotas. Chimchar could be seeing sweeping usage, as with Shinx

Movesets

Chimchar @Sitrus Berry / Life Orb / Expert Belt
Trait: Blaze
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
~Swords Dance
~Shadow Claw / U-turn
~Blaze Kick
~Thunderpunch

A possible physical sweeping set for Chimchar, with Shadow Claw instead of Stone Edge. Basic idea is Swords Dance if you predict they will switch, and proceed to sweep. Sitrus Berry helps with Item Clause on

Piplup @Leftovers / Oran Berry
Trait: Torrent
Nature: Calm
EVs: 152 HP / 108 Def / 52 SAtk / 196 SDef
~Stealth Rock
~Yawn
~Grass Knot / Ice Beam / Drill Peck
~Surf / Brine

Defensive Piplup. Stealth Rock first, then force switched with Yawn. Brine can be used once they are weakened. This set doesn't fare too well against Snover, so consider investing some Attack EVs for Drill Peck

Gible @Choice Scarf / Salac Berry / Choice Band
Trait: Sand Veil
Nature: Jolly / Adamant
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
~Dragon Claw
~Stone Edge
~Earthquake
~Iron Head / Aerial Ace

Unlike Garchomp, Gible doesn't get Fire Fang or Swords Dance, so this will have to do I guess. This thing is also deadly if used in combo with Hippopotas

Snover @Leftovers / Sitrus Berry / Big Root
Trait: Snow Warning
Nature: Timid / Modest
EVs: 108 HP / 200 SAtk / 200 Spd
~Blizzard
~Energy Ball / Water Pulse / Shadow Ball
~Leech Seed
~Substitute / Growth

Subseeding set for Snover. Big Root increases HP restored by Leech Seed. Water Pulse if you're fearful of Fire types, Growth as an alternative if you want a rather sweeping oriented set. Shadow Ball is pure novelty

Hippopotas @Leftovers / Oran Berry
Nature: Impish
EVs: 180 HP / 132 Atk / 196 Def
~Stealth Rock
~Slack Off
~Earthquake
~Rock Slide / Crunch

Stealth Rocker, without the support of the elemental fangs. Crunch is mainly so you don't get blocked by Gastly and other Levitating ghosts

Cranidos @Choice Band / Life Orb / Focus Sash
Trait: Mold Breaker
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
~Stone Edge
~Earthquake
~Swords Dance / Rock Polish / Hammer Arm
~Pursuit

Elekid @Expert Belt
Trait: Static
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 52 HP / 252 Atk / 200 Spd
~Thunderpunch
~Ice Punch
~Cross Chop
~Fire Punch

Serebii is down, they should get a bigger server. Elemental punching set

Bronzor @Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
Nature: Impish
EVs: 52 Atk / 200 HP / 200 Def / 52 SDef
~Stealth Rock
~Hypnosis
~Gyro Ball / Explosion
~Reflect

SR. Levitate so that Diglett doesn't threaten it. Basically mirrors Bronzong, only a junior version
*Don't know if by standards, it is banned along with Chansey

Sneasel @Life Orb / Focus Sash
Trait: Inner Focus
Nature: Adamant / Jolly
EVs: 20 HP / 248 Atk / 240 Spd
~Shadow Claw
~Ice Punch / Ice Shard
~Brick Break
~Swords Dance / Pursuit

Ice Shard if you want to annoy Diglett, who you . Pursuit / Shadow Claw scares the soul in Abra. Jolly will make it outspeed Gastly

Drifloon @Focus Sash
Trait: Aftermath
Nature: Timid
EVs: 8 HP / 252 SAtk / 248 Spd
~Baton Pass
~Hypnosis
~Shadow Ball
~Calm Mind

Blabbers at both Gastly and Abra, who fall to Shadow Ball if they don't switch. Hypnosis on the switch, CM then Pass

Diglett @Life Orb
Trait: Arena Trap
Nature: Adamant / Jolly
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
~Earthquake
~Sucker Punch
~Rock Slide
~Aerial Ace

Sucker Punch still kills Gastly and Abra. However, Gastly is going to be annoying if it carries Focus Sash, as with Abra

Gastly @Focus Sash
Trait: Levitate
Nature: Timid
EVs: 12 HP / 248 SAtk / 248 Spd
~Energy Ball
~Shadow Ball
~Hidden Power [Fighting]
~Explosion

You need HP Fighting or else you can't do much to Houndour. Does it's job, then explodes

Houndour @Life Orb
Trait: Flash Fire
Nature: Modest
EVs: 56 HP / 248 SAtk / 204 Spd
~Flamethrower
~Dark Pulse
~Will-o-Wisp
~Hidden Power [Grass]

Will-o-Wisp a physical attack, and sweep. This thing won't be outspeeding much stuff though with 65 base speed

Porygon @Leftovers
Trait: Trace
Nature: Modest
EVs: 156 HP / 248 SAtk / 104 SDef
~Ice Beam
~Thunderbolt / Discharge
~Recover
~Hidden Power [Grass] / Tri Attack

HP Grass if you fear Chinchou, which you will, even with Tri Attack

Dratini @Choice Specs / Life Orb
Trait: Shed Skin
Nature: Modest
EVs: 112 HP / 200 SAtk / 196 Spd
~Draco Meteor
~Fire Blast
~Ice Beam
~Thunderbolt

Duskull @Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
Nature: Impish / Calm
EVs: 200 HP / 52 Atk / 200 Def / 52 SDef
~Shadow Sneak
~Pain Split
~Will-o-Wisp
~Pursuit

I forgot about most of this stuff :(

Anyways, Happiny I'm not sure if it's banned or not. Added Sheildon, Sneasel and Cranidos, as well as Murkrow

I did a topic on this a while ago, and have been thinking about some of the interesting aspects of it. I'm much more comfortable with it as a mainly an ingame thing, since it's great for people who don't want to mess around too much with EVs or natures too much. Overall, it's a fun cup, since Happiny can't do most of the horrible things Blissey can do, and most threatening dual types are single types at this point. I'd suggest the banning of anything with a higher base stat total than Ponyta, though, if you want balance, and possibly ban Meditite, Cubone, etc...
In terms of Pokemon who look newly highly viable here, I'd put Eevee(due to Adaptibility, Curse, and Return in Combo), Cranidos(125 base attack, and a base speed that's actually half decent for a low-leveled Pokeyman), and Totodile(Dragon Dance/Ice Punch/Waterfall/Quake/GG).

What about Mime Jr? Mime Jr. has good sp def and sp attk and can be really disruptive... I use him on my diamond version with this set:

Mime Jr.
Timid
Filter
252spattk/252spd
@ Choice Scarf
~ Trick
~ Hypnosis
~ Teeter Dance
~ Psychic

although in little cup i doubt he'd need the speed and stuff... anywho Mime Jr's a good pokemon i think you should consider for little cup

Is little cup going to be considered level 1 now and are any pokemon banned from it? If not then people can get stuff like level 5 Blisseys, Clefables and Togekiss's.

Edit: just remembering back and thinking that it's first stage pokemon only? Is that correct?

I believe it still will be level 5 because that's the way it's been since the beginning of Pokemon and more importantly, because there is simply no variety at level 1. Every stat looks the same, and every Pokemon looks the same.

You just don't use any evolved Pokemon (such as Blissey), or Pokemon that won't evolve (such as Lapras), and pokemon that use to not be able to evolve (suchas Onix, and Sneasel). That way it remains very balanced, and is far more varied than even the main metagem. In G/S/C this was my speciality. It is very fun to play, and not so competitive as the main metagame. Just as a side note, under those conditions, the strongest total base stat pokemon is Ponyta. As a second side note, the reason I put in "no Pokemon that used to not evolve" is because things like Sneasel, Gligar, Lickitung, Tangela and so on would totally unbalance the metagame.

Level 1 wouldn't make sense, as a huge percetange of the stats would be 5. Lol.

CBMedicham does some serious damage with the elemantal punches. It can do a load of damage to non-evolved Pokemon. Trapinch is the Little Cup's Dugtrio. CBQuickAttack + Arena Trap is good. Eevee has Curse + Return + Adaptability, which hurts. CBCranidos hertz the metagame. Just some of the notable physical swwpers.

By using the vitamins to get it at least 100, then using the Power items to get the best you can. Obviously, you can't max out the 510 Evs, but you can do your best. For example, Magikarps give really low EXP, so you can EV train against them reasonably safely.

its frustrating as hell, but you can do it. vitamins up to a hundred, then power whatever on the pokemon you want to have th evs, and have it start the battle with the pokemon whose ivs you want (they have to be low level, of course. then switch to the 5 other pokemon in your party, having all 5 equipped with exp share.

now im not exactly sure how the math works, but it looks like with that method you would gain 1 exp per battle, which gives you plenty of time to max evs.

Yeah, that is the best method. Against a Level 4 Magikarp, if you used that method your Pokemon would get really low experience. Also, the level 4 Staravias and Bibarels on Lake verity would help, giving good EVs for little EXP.

Yeah, it's really hard to EV them ingame, but again, using that method would probably be the best

New Set for Cranidos:

Cranidos @Choice Band / Life Orb / Focus Sash
Trait: Mold Breaker
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
~Stone Edge
~Earthquake
~Swords Dance / Rock Polish / Hammer Arm
~Pursuit

Basic Cranidos set. Only use Rock Polish or Swords Dance if you plan on using either Life Orb or Focus Sash. As usually, switch in on something that doesn't bother it, set up, survive the attack (or if you feel lucky, go for Life Orb) and then feel free to sweep the entire team apart

Life Orb would be so good in little cup imo... you do more damage and lose ~2 when you attack.

Would stuff like Bronzor be any good in LC, or is walling just unimportant?

I'm totally new to this stuff but the Little Cup idea sounds like a lot of fun, especially since you get to use the unevolved pokemon that are long forgotten by the time you beat the game/build a competitive lvl 100 team.

Any chance someone could spend a little time and complete a full rules list, including banned pokemon/moves, etc?

there was one last gen on another forum (dont remember what it was) that said something like

Species Clause; No Chansey, Scyther, or Ponyta; no Thick Club/Light Ball; Sleep Clause; no Sonicboom or Dragon Rage (or Dragon something, the one that always does 40), etc. I dont remember everything though

I don't see why Happiny would get banned if Munchlax is better in every single way.

In fact, I think Munchlax should be the one getting the ban in such case.
