This is my second attempt at building a competitive team and hopefully this one will be better. I've been hovering between 1100-1200 CRE on the ladder and want to go higher. Also sorry for the horrible title.
1. I wanted my team to be based on an Ulgamoth sweep so he joins my team.
2. Ulgamoth basically needs spin-support with its 4x weakness to rock, so I chose Starmie as my spinner because it has nice type synergy with Ulgamoth and has nice coverage as well. In addition, Starmie takes care of Heatran, Salamence and Gyrados, all threats to Ulgamoth.
3. I need something to take out Ulgamoth's counters especially Blissey, so I added Roobushin to the team. He has priority which is nice against the prevalent weather abusers and doesn't fear status and can even set up himself if needed.
4. I realize I need a dragon and a revenger on my team and who better than the legendary Garchomp. Garchomp has nice speed and movepool which really rounds off the coverage on my team.
5. I realize that I already have a water and a fire type, so why not go full circle with a grass-type to complete the FWG core. I decided that Nattorei should be added for its useful resistances and the entry hazards it could lay.
6. Now I needed a lead who can lay hazards and prevent them from being laid, I tried a couple of MH pokes, but found Deoxys-S the most useful for its entry hazards magic coat, taunt and amazing speed.
7. After a lot of testing I found that Zuruzukin could replace Roobushin for his evenly split bulk, coverage, typing and ability to boost speed. And so my team is born.
8. After giving my Deoxys Spikes I decided I did not need Nattorei and replaced him with Rankulus who has bulky sweeper potential which matches my team well.
Deoxys-S @ Focus Sash
Trait: Pressure
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Magic Coat
- Spikes
- Stealth Rock
- Psycho Boost
This set has worked wonders for me with its amazing speed and utility. If I am going against a lead without MH I go straight for set-up and even if I get tricked I 'm usually fast enough not to get locked in and can switch to spikes/stealth rock. If I am against a MH lead I use magic coat (which has higher priority than MH) and bounce it back at them. Pretty much this scares them from abusing MH again, but I am a conservative player so I taunt first then I proceed to set-up stealth rocks the next turn. I chose psycho boost as my attack option because with all its speed I can usually keep Deoxys later to revenge something that boosts its speed or think they can survive a weak attack (Blaziken, Roobushin, random choice scarf pokemons etc...) The ev's are pretty straight forward, max speed to outspeed everything and max special attack to get the most from psycho boost.
Leads I have problems with: TYRANITAR, and weather-inducing leads in general.
Garchomp (M) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Sand Veil
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Outrage
- Fire Blast
Garchomp is my dragon and revenge killer, with a choice scarf and a jolly nature, he pretty much outspeeds everything and kills them with one of its moves. I had double-chop over fire blast, but I found the damage disappointing and fire blast helps clear its coverage issues, but locking myself into outrage is trouble-some. I usually bring Garchomp in after something has died and fire off an outrage if all my moves are neutral or use the appropriate move to KO the opposing pokemon. The ev's are pretty straight forward for a scarfer and the coverage of the moves are ok, not spectacular, but they get the job done. His moves also don't add redundant coverage to my team which is nice.
Rankurusu (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Magic Guard
EVs: 192 HP / 188 Def / 128 SAtk
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Calm Mind
- Recover
- Psycho Shock
- Hidden Power [Fighting]
Rankulus makes a very nice addition to my team with its amazing bulk and powerful attacks. Most people don't pay attention to him, but once he sets up he can be quite devastating. The ev's give him some physical bulk while letting him use unboosted attacks effectively especially with no draw backs life orb. He uses a standard Calm Mind set with recover for extended longevity and he has HP fighting because Focus Blasts's accuracy is extremely off-putting. He is very useful and immunity to passive damage prevents him from sweeping on a timer.
Urugamosu (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Flame Body
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Butterfly Dance
- Flame Dance
- Bug Buzz
- Psychic
And the star of the show, Ulgamoth. I can usually get 2 BD's in and after that it's pretty much GG. I run a timid nature because I can outspeed choice scarfs below 100 (Genesect) and speed tie with other base 100 scarfers. I run flame body to screw with physical attackers and PO's haxy server has made it activate almost everytime. :) Sometimes I wish for swarm for against blissey (last pokemon) for the extra oomph before I die. I use flame dance to boost my special attack even higher and bug buzz as my other STAB. I use psychic as my coverage move becuase it has proven very useful against blaziken, roobushin, tentacruel, and terakion. The ev's are pretty staight forward with an odd HP so that if stealth rock is up, I can switch in twice. He is a seriously powerful MF and will tear through unprepared teams.
Zuruzukin (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Shed Skin
EVs: 252 HP / 104 Def / 104 SDef / 48 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Dragon Dance
- Drain Punch
- Crunch
- Ice Punch
Such an incredibly useful, bulky-ass pokemon. Sometimes I just sweep with him and don't even use poor Ulgamoth. This pokemon is very underrated, but he rapes teams on a daily basis. I chose dragon dance over bulk-up because although bulk-up increases his defense, I found myself getting killed before I can, so using DD I can sweep through teams. I use drain punch and crunch as his STAB's and they give him good coverage and ice punch is for annoying gliscors who think they can wall me along with other ground and dragon types. The ev's make him ridiculously bulky being able to survive specs Latios' draco meteor and KO back with crunch. His typing is also very nice and shed skin is AMAZING, oh got burned by hot water, no problem I'll just take off my pants! Definitely a staple on my team. I've added more speed to it to out speed Gliscor after a DD. I decided to have shed skin to prevent against status, no matter how attractive the attack boost with overconfidence may seem, I find having an "immunity" to status extremely important.
Starmie @ Leftovers
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Rapid Spin
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
- Surf
And finally, the all important spinner, the one that can make an Ulgamoth sweep possible. Starmie's ev's let him outspeed most of the metagame and give him some fighting strength as well. When his spinning days are over I use him as a late-game cleaner and he does his job very well with his great movepool.
